That's me, I'd never think of buying a Grand Cherokee or Compass or Liberty or, for that matter, any other common garden-variety SUV on the market, even though my usage doesn't really demand a Wrangler, would probably be just as well served, better even, by a more citified car. I've just always loved the more classic Jeep look and feel. For me, the Unlimited Rubicon is overkill for how I'll use it 95% of the time, but there is that 5%, and besides, it's the one I want.

I can fully understand where you are coming from, I have been there most of my life. I almost bought a Wrangler in '96 without a back seat, just so I could get into the wrangler, but my wife (with support from all of my family) talked me out of it because she was pregnant. I used to be the guy who cried, if it has AC, its stealing power, real men drive stangs with only the v8 and a track pack as options.

I ended up getting exactly what most on this site would claim is a perfect Wrangler. 2 Door Rubicon, half doors, only option is side airbags (I think the infinity was standard on 2010 Rubicon). Nothing else - hard core wheeler/convertable and that's it. I got it when it was less than 2 years old, why? I assume the original owner got luxury items on his replacement. If I were to buy today, I would buy differently as well but most likely I will just add the options I want (hard top, full doors, Nav/BT). Those are the easy items to add, just $$$$.

I like things simple but sometimes its nice to not have to zip down a window, be able to listen to your music without plugging in a cable (or 2). Its also nice to have heated seats in the winter (especially since I have arthritis in my back-the heat REALLY helps make cold weather endurable). I even am ok with AC in a Jeep. I now will even accept 4 doors as "real" Jeeps and not just call them Wagoneers

Although I think a 2 door Freedom Edition or Sahara could be perfect for your situation, I think you will end up finding yourself wanting to take the Jeep more often than you may expect on those "family activities" during the week\weekend (going out to eat, movies, mini golf, amusement parks, to grandma's, etc.), therefore I would lean towards the 4 door.

In addition to this, if you get a 4 door, then you have more room for cargo, etc., in which you could then possibly give up the lease on one of your other SUVs and get a good gas mileage car for day to day communting, errands, etc.

Just my two pennies. :P

i see some people are trying to talk you into the 2 door.... 2 doors are nice, but remember your really lacking in the space department.

im 30yrs old no kids no wife... so usually it'll be myself, my girlfriend and my pitbull when i pick him up from the folks house after work. but the reason im choosing to go the unlimited route. i like to take trips and you can definetly fit more stuff into a unlimited model. not to mention im 6'1 220 lbs and i like room lol

all in all i feel the four door is more convenient, i myself think the full doors are better looking and better for security purposes.

I was the one suggesting that he think about a 2 door for this reason only. If it truly is a 3rd car, it most likely will stay a 3rd car. No matter how much you enjoy it, a lot of people will not throw away 2xs the cost in gas just to drive a Jeep everyday IF they can afford to have 2 cars. If I commute, I will have my Jeep with a payment and a cheap beater to drive for work. Why wear out my Jeep (which I love) and waste the gas? I can enjoy it when I want to, but don't have the negatives when I don't. I don't care about image, I want enjoyment within a reasonable cost. I've got a 2dr. It's awesome. I consider it a 2 person vehicle. I find the rear seat to be a novelty item that really should be an option vs standard. 99% of the time the rear seat is out so I can haul a reasonable amount of stuff. Without a sidestep/rock-rail its almost impossible to get in the back. With ace rock rails it not too bad. I wouldn't get a 2dr with kids.

4drs look bad to me unless they have a bit of lift and 35" tires. Half doors help too. That made it a bit too expensive for me. It would be nice to be able to sleep in the jeep vs a tent.

KC, This is exactly what I am thinking - 3rd car, should stay that way.
1. Daily Driver - SUV - > convert this to 4 door sedan when lease up. I need to take clients out to lunch. need to be able to take 4 guys in suits.
2. Family Truckster - > leave as minivan or maybe go for unlimited if jeep is a hit. 3rd row space is useful though.
3. weekender, fun car. seconds as rough weather car if i have sedan too.

but I love everyone's 2 cents! This forum rocks so far.

LOL seems like maybe we are at the same point in life

Another suggestion is if you go sedan, check out the Kia Optima. My wife got a 2012 with the turbo (mentioned above) lots of room, even in back, good mpg (think its like 35 highway), good power (plenty of throttle even over 100mph-governor kicks in at 155), the turbo comes with heated seats even in rear and could be a good corporate car with some added sportyness. Could be a great driver.

Truckster idea sounds great !

The only drawback would be you could not take clients in rough weather in the 2 door, but if it were that bad, I doubt you would continue. The FWD in the Kia is good for most weather, but the Jeep as 3rd car would rock when the roads get closed and the Kia cant get out!

Welcome to WF

Sounds like your needs are similar to mine.

I went with a 4 door Sahara....I don't do heavy off-roading, so the AT tires and (optional) LSD were far more important than the MT tires and all-or-nothing lockers on the Rubi.

My big debate was between the Sport S and the Sahara. That came down to color, and a few options for me.

2 door vs 4 door? Tough call. If it is a true "3rd" vehicle...I would consider a 2 door. Then again, if it is a true "3rd vehicle"...I would go from 4 door Sahara, to 2 door Sport or Rubi.

Yeah, you are going to have to let that bias go. Truth be told, most JK's don't see anything more than fire roads.

Why not a Compass or a GC? Well, I looked at a GC....but it can't do this in the summer.

Valid points all. But there is a big difference between the SUV Jeep line and the Wrangler. The add ons of leather, power locks, etc. don't detract in my opinion from the "rough and ready" allure of the Wrangler and its ability to be made over- removable top, different tops and unlimited accessories, mods, etc. Never heard anyone say they loved their Cherokee the way people say they love their Wranglers. Right you are- to each their own.

So I am thinking about ordering within next 7 days.... trying to limit it to questions that effect the order - I am sure i'll have way more once I get it!

In general, price is not the biggest concern, but I dont want to throw away $$ on things I don't need.

Sahara vs Sport S vs Rubicon - Thinking Sahara since it will be more on-road than off. I like the sahara wheels and painted fenders.

2 door vs 4 door? - Seems easier to have kids jump in back. My wife and I love the feel of the 2 door, and rear seats how its open. I thought the 2 door test drive, the ride was different than I am used to, i've been seeing that its probably the shorter wheelbase.

Half Doors vs Full doors - just saw this today as an option. If I wanted both, painted, what is best way to order? Really love the feel/look of this - a family summer cruiser, going to parks, etc...

Soft top vs prem. soft top vs hard top - I know I want soft top, for ease of having top down quickly. I heard bad things from dealer about premium soft top - as in it was hard to get back on, because of shrinkage

Buy vs Lease - Dealer told me lots of people end up with Lease Equity..... Won't put too many miles since its 3rd car.

Color - Was thinking of copperhead - unless its going to delay purchase too long. Other thoughts are anvil or silver/gray

Options:
Bluetooth is a must, Nav would be nice.
Satellite radio is a must
Would love upgraded sound, but not at cost of space or anything.
Some way to attach modern ipad for songs.

what else is a "must" ?

Don't make the same mistake I did...don't get the Sahara. Do it right the first time and get the Rubicon. You'll forget the extra 2K in 2 months, but you won't forget which model you have, especially if this one is a keeper.

Get the 4 door. Its a lot more practical, has a better ride, and if you have a family, it's not even a debate IMHO.

Full doors. You don't want half doors in the North East.

I chose the hardtop only because i knew I'd never mess around switching tops. if you have a garage, you can roll with the top off on nice days. It makes the wrangler quieter and more comfortable.

Buy it. Do not lease a wrangler. Their monster resale values (especially if you are planning on keeping it) make leasing a poor financial decision.

Navi is nice to have, and the uconnect is a definite must have. I like leather because it's easy to keep clean, and remote start is a very nice feature as well. I'd opt for the side airbags too.

P.S. Im in Jersey too (short hills) so let me know if you need help, etc, or you want to check out my rig before you make your decision.

I hear you guys... The Wrangler is a VERY Special vehicle on so many levels. I am slowly letting my bias go... We tend to want the world to see things our way!

Here is my scale I am working on letting go... :-)

Top Rated -
Soft top/topless, doorless or half doors, mainly mods that improve off road capability and ACTUALLY GET USED... and minimal luxury car/minivan features (maps and mind, not GPS :-)

Middle Ground -
Swapping doors and tops as weather and use dictates, some creature comforts and bling enough to make you smile every time you walk up to it, it gets off pavement on a semi-regular basis.

Bottom Rated -
Hard top (and full doors...) that NEVER come off. Mods or not... Off road mods for looks... Harder to understand.

I just hope Jeep never lets the Wrangler become another Grand Cherokee because not enough people love it's awesome, varied configurations and uses!! That would be a sad day indeed!

your points are very valid, including pricing and it being a "third" car. once again the guy is a family man lol 2 extra doors helps out a whole lot. especially if your constantly hauling others around with you. If his enjoyment or fun time is being with wife and children then how in world will he fit them all in there at the same time if he owns a 2 door?

like i said im not knocking the 2 door. the 2 door wrangler is and will always be the original styling and look of a jeep wrangler. however it has to mean something that the 4 door wrangler has been is so popular since it's creation. im sure the 2 extra doors as well as space are a big factor in why its popularity blew up so much.

It ALWAYS depends on how you are going to use the vehicle....and sometimes you just don't know.

For some, not getting a Rubi up front was a mistake. For others, getting a Rubi is a waste of money. You have to keep in mind these types of sights of off-road biased. You just have to be honest with yourself.

Are you someone that has always had either lifted or modified vehicles?
Are you interested in off-roading?
"Why" do you want a Wrangler?

I don't see why so many people have suggested 4 door. If he already has a mini van AND an SUV it seems like he has the roles of cargo and people mover filled.

If he wants it for a fun drive and eventual hand-me-down Go 2 door. They're the funner of the two sizes, and the difference in fuel economy seems like a small point now, but it would be a big deal to your son one day. Imagine how much gas prices might be in 7 years. Especially on a students budget!

The "you have other cars" argument is pretty poor. He's not a single guy. He has a family. Having 47 other cars doesn't help when you want to take the family on a Moab adventure in the Jeep. Unless he is getting the Jeep to have fun all on his own, the 4 door is the right choice. 2 doors are definitely NOT more fun on the road. As a parent, I would also feel a lot less secure knowing my kid is driving around a twitchy 2 door rather than a stable 4 door.

I see a third car more like a motorcycle purchase for someone with kids that age. I am assuming the OP is late 30s early 40s and been successful at work. Probably spent most of his life thus far taking care of his family. Now is his time to play a little and be a little selfish. A Jeep is just like a Harley ( I have had both) and with these conditions, its just an expensive toy to play with.

Many of these poster see it as a primary vehicle and expect the kids to be in it regularly. I love my family - I was a single dad for years, now I have 2 more step kids and a somewhat adopted stray or two. BUT they all know my Jeep is mine. If we go anywhere with 4 people, it's in the wife's car if possible or even 2 cars. Or they deal with squeezing in the back. Most don't complain when the tops off. The one who does, well, we just make him go his own way or ride with the wife

My Jeep is worth it for me to keep it mine

If he wants it for a fun drive and eventual hand-me-down Go 2 door. They're the funner of the two sizes, and the difference in fuel economy seems like a small point now, but it would be a big deal to your son one day. Imagine how much gas prices might be in 7 years. Especially on a students budget!
I understand what you are getting at, and I agree (which I would I had stated) about getting a 2dr as a pure "3rd" vehicle.

But the reality is that unless you other two vehicles are a Porche and a Benz, a brand new Wrangler sitting in your driveway will become your primary vehicle pretty quickly. The benefit of the 4 door is that it can probably replace the role of the small SUV.

I almost got a 2 door Wrangler and kept my old Liberty as a "3rd vehicle" (she has a Rav-4). But I knew that the Liberty would just sit there and continue to lose value. Unless I'm towing +2000 pounds or moving multiple people, why would I ever take the Liberty over the 2 door Wrangler? The 4 door solved both problems.

With that said, I would still like a 2 door....TJ.

I guess what I'm saying is; do you want more of the same or something different?

You get different tools for different jobs. I don't go out and buy a drill press just to have one in a different brand if I already have two others. but I might get a milling machine, because those are fun and different. You feel me?

Definitely get the 4 door...i have 3 kids..so much easier for them to get in or out..as far as color..your choice..buy instead of lease....they hold their value...I have 2012 sport of the lot...the great thing about jeep is adding mods to it which i did...you will see..good luck

But it is easier to carry mom, dad, two rascals...and "stuff" in the 4 door. I keep certain items in the rear of my Jeep at all times. Blanket, fire extinguisher, work gloves, jacket, hat, portable air compressor, road side kit, ect... I still have room for groceries, a stroller, a sheet of baked macaroni and chesse to take to the inlaws, ect....

I understand exactly what you are saying...but the 4 door is a multi-purpose tool.

When my wife and I pack up the infant and the dog, more times than not, we take my Wrangler over her 2011 Rav-4...which is a nice vehicle that is perfectly suited as a family hauler (that gets better mpg as well).....but it simply isn't as nice or fun as the Wrangler with the Sunrider open.

I'm not against the 2 door...I'm just saying...when you are going somewhere and there is a new Wrangler sitting in the driveway, it becomes hard to leave it there and hop in a different vehicle unless you simply have to.

Buy it. Do not lease a wrangler. Their monster resale values (especially if you are planning on keeping it) make leasing a poor financial decision.

Navi is nice to have, and the uconnect is a definite must have. I like leather because it's easy to keep clean, and remote start is a very nice feature as well. I'd opt for the side airbags too.

P.S. Im in Jersey too (short hills) so let me know if you need help, etc, or you want to check out my rig before you make your decision.

Another vote for the 2-door. All the good looking 4-doors have a lift and 35" tires. If they don't, they look like a scool bus. I'm sorry but while the Unlimited can be made to look like a Jeep, without the mods, it's a station wagon.

As for the 2-door...

1... It's the kids that have to climb in the back, not you. They're kids. If they gripe about having to climb in the Jeep, just say.... "ok, we'll take the car". They'll climb in.
Also, just a note...the 2-door rear seat is actually more comfortable to ride in than the 4-door seat. Lots of complaints about the rear seat in the 4-door.

2... While the ride might not be as "civilized" on the highway, the nimble slow speed and off road handling is superior to the unlimited. That light, quick steering and tight turning radious , while not as comfortable at speed on the highway, is a delite off road. Off road is where you really appreciate the short wheelbase.

You already have "cars". So do I and I enjoy having something else that doesn't feel like driving a car. The Unlimited is a car......!

There is no doubt that the 2-door is more nimble. I used to love my Y2K Sport for running around town in any weather, it was easy to fit into parking spots and parallel parking was a snap because I had real good location awareness with all four corners of the vehicle. I could sometimes pull into within mere inches of another vehicle and know exactly where a given corner was in relation to the other car. I will be curious to see if the Unlimited will be as 'easy' in that respect.
