Buying a Jeep this summer....hold out for a '14?

Thought I'd get some opinions from the experts

I've years of waiting, I'm finally going to be able get a Wrangler this summer.

Now that the time is almost here, I'm wondering if I should hold out just a little longer for a '14 model.

I'm very particular about the features I want (and don't want) so I've written off any possibility of swooping in as dealers are trying to clear the 13s to make room for the 14s

Anyways, are there new features in the 14s that will make it worth the wait?

Also, I'm assuming the "Anvil" color scheme has been axed this year?

It isn't known if it will happen for the '14 model year, but the talk is about the diesel comping to North America, and an updated automatic (8 or 9 speed). There is no redesign of the Wrangler in the works, but if you are going to be buying in the summer, you will be very close to the release of the '14, and we'll certainly know the details by then.

Then decide if it is worth waiting, or if there are good incentives on the '13. You might see a lot of good trades if the '14 does come with a diesel option, as there are lots of people that would upgrade (like me) to the diesel...

There will always be the "next great thing", but I don't think there will be any show stoppers for '14. Since you say you are picky, I would just place an order based on your timeframe and get the 4-6 weeks of waiting out of the way!

If you are waiting until mid to late summer, you might as well get a 2014...even if there are no significant differences. One year newer is one year newer...and will help resale. Normally, you are motivated to buy the prior model year by a financial incentive, but this is a Wrangler...and you will probably be able to buy a 2014 in August for under invoice. I bought my 2013 on Labor Day 2012 for 2% under after all fees.

If you were considering buying in the beginning of the summer, well, that's a different equation...and you would need to factor in loss of use during prime top-off months.

Color is another factor. Do you like any of the 2013 colors? Personally, I think 2013 was a pretty bad year for color choices if you don't like skittle colors. Of course, opinions will vary...but 2014 will likely bring a couple different choices.

I agree...I'd wait for '14 if you know it'll be summer before you can order anyhow. That way you can pick one of the new for '14 colors which in my opinion are better, and you get the added resale value of the new model year.

The 2014 will be almost 100% the same as 2013 except for color options and a minor interior tweak here and there. 2016 is when the all-new Wrangler will make an appearance as a 2017 model.

This. It'll pretty much be the same jeep until 2016(2017 model)

if you can swing it, buy it now and you'll be able to enjoy it all spring and summer. If you don't have it in the summer you miss out on the best jeep season!

Colors became a pain in my A$$ for 2013. I was all set to go out and order a 2DR Rubi in Crush. The options I wanted weren't available in local circulation so I would have needed to order one.... Unfortunately, I didn't do my research and found out that Jeep stopped production on the Crush in November. My heart was broken.... So I saw that they were coming out with Dune..... so I waited some more until I could see it with my own two eyes and man was I disappointed.... Long story short I went with my backup color black but hesitation prevented me from getting what I originally wanted...

TL;DR Don't wait......

2014s will be the same as 2012s minus some color options... No changes slated until the 2016 refresh ... to include any chance of diesel

Save yourself the money by buying a year or two old and use the extra money for mods

This is coming from a guy who saw the 10th Anniversary Rubicon in December(online), didn't like ANY of the colors (Anvil was from the jeep site)...Traded my '08 Rescue Green in January for a '13 Sahara in Crush. Then saw a pic of the Anvil 10A Rubicon on a different website, fell in love, and two weeks later, went back to the dealership and ordered WHAT I TRULY WANTED. I "like" the Crush, but I "LOVED" my Rescue Green. And I know I'll LOVE the Anvil now that I have seen it. And there are rumors that while Anvil is a 2013 Anniversary only color, it may make an appearance in 2014. Hold out until the true info is available this summer.

I thought Anvil was coming out with the 10A Wrangler this spring, and then following in the next model year.

August is a good time to buy, usually they start clearing out the years stock and you can also order the next years model too. I know you said you have specifics you want and all, but sometimes the deal is better with what's in stock even if you end up with more than what you want. I didn't want to spend money on the power group, but the deal was too good to pass up.

And since you are particular about what you want...be sure to compare what you will get and will NOT get between the 13s and the 14s. Each year, Chryslers gives while taking away. In 2007, 4.10 gearing was standard on all JKs with Auto transmission or the Tow Group, and optional with manual transmissions. In 2008 the 4.10 was only available on the Rubicon. In 2007, the Trailer Tow group included the hitch, 4-pin adapter, 4.10 axle ratio, and Dana 44 heavy duty solid rear axle across all models. In 2008, the 4.10 was replaced with the 3.73. In 2013, its just the hitch and 4 pin adapter UNLESS you are buying the Rubicon (which comes with 3.73 standard) or you get the MAX Tow package which then upgrades you to the 3.73.
So basically, get a 2013 brochure and see what you like and when the 2014s come out, compare. BTW, I got this info from my 2007, 2008, and 2013 Jeep Wrangler brochures which I still have.

I am about in the same boat and I will wait for the 2014, unless my truck falls apart and I have to get one sooner. For me, it's more about putting some money away, for my retirement and Alaska trip in 2014. I also want the new Jeep, because I plan to sell and buy the redesign 2017, if its no too bad.

I have been watching the threads about the diesel or the 8 speed auto real closely and reading Allpar, but I don't see any of that happening. What might happen are small changes, like the dash information from the 10A, or who knows what else they could change, but chances are they will be small changes.

If I was you, when it came time to buy, check the local dealers or contact Pat and just see if what you want is around, if not then order, GOOD LUCK

That's not entirely accurate. Furthermore brochures are notoriously wrong. All JK's (escept a few early 07's) have a D44 rear axle.

Just buy what you can right now and enjoy life. It will age, you will age, and newer better things will come along. You can re-think and purchase again later.

The most important part is when you turn 80 will you be smiling about the life you lived or regretting being too careful with your purchases?

OOPS! Cross out the 44 Rear. Yes, that is standard. But the 4.10 gearing WAS included on late 2007 Autos and Tow Group packages, like the 3.73 is today on Max Tow for '13 Saharas. I know because when the '08s were released(and I was in the market for an '07) it was a noticed by print media and any and all '07s were even left on lots in August 2007 were snapped up. I ended ordering my '08 and the 4.10 was no longer an option outside of getting the Rubicon.
But aside from my errors, my point to the OP is that while Jeep may add some things each year, they will take it away somewhere else and to check for himself what benefits he gains/loses between the 2014/2015. We have all seen posts from folks who bought Rubis and assumed that the 4.10 was still standard.

Model Year usually ends around Sept/Oct and Wranglers don't usually get the end of model incentives because they don't need incentives to sell them. Get it now so you can enjoy it in the summer.

Incentives or not, I think a dealer is going to be a little more motivated to cut loose a 13 vs. a 14. On the other hand, the resale argument is a good point.

If it were me, I'd start looking now and if I found a good deal on exactly what I wanted, I'd pull the trigger. Otherwise, I'd wait and see what the 2014 changes are and what kind of deals are available in the future.

Never discount the now, though. I just bought my '13 JKUR and it doesn't matter what they do with the '14's, I am glad I pulled the trigger.

I have been told by 2 dealers if you place an order today. 3/13/03 it will be a 2014? But no info on changes or colors available.

O.K., I talked with the Western Regional Manager for Chrysler, just prior to purchasing my new 2013 Rubicon. I asked him about the eight (8) speed automatic Transmission for 2014 Wrangler. He said that it will not happen in 2014, because of two reasons. First the five speed is only been available 2012, 2013 and is the primary design for usage with the 3.6 in the Wrangler with the ratios that are currently available. Second is that they are having some mechanical issues with the eight speed currently in production. He would not share anymore INFO regarding 2014 models.
As for Differential ratios in the Rubicon. The 3:73 is the standard ratio in the 2013 model with the five speed automatic trans. The 4:10 is optional, which I have and I paid extra for it.

I actually just took delivery of my 2013 JKR less than a week ago & my mentality was that I would go ahead & get one in case there may be changes. I've been hearing that the transmission may change & I'm the type that never wants to buy a vehicle the first year they make a big change because there's almost always problems. It's true that you'll be covered under warranty if any problems come up but I personally don't want my Jeep in the repair shop all the time.

I like the 5 speed a lot...an 8 speed would not appeal to me personally. Too many parts, too many shifts, too many reliability issues, and the claimed MPG savings will probably not be worth it.
