Talking Buying a new Jeep Wrangler!

Hello forum!!!

I'll try to make this short! (something I never seem to accomplish)

I am planning on buying a wrangler for commuting and to enter in amateur rally races.
I am very new to the world of rally racing and i was told that the best thing to do with a wrangler for starters is buying a manual and installing sport clutches...

Now I need to know if there are any other important installations and changes to make.
...And more importantly at the moment: Does it matter which model I buy? I am buying either the Sport or the Mountain 2010 ... MAYBE a Sahara Limited 2011..

In a nutshell: Is it better to get the Sport Manual transmission for my purpose? Does buying something with more options make it perform in any way less; Will I ever need to remove parts to make the car more suitable for racing?

Rally Racing a Wrangler? Are you mad? There for crawling and mud bogging.. Not racing.. IMO The "high speed" roll over factor is way to high..

Sorry not trying to be mean it's just that the wrangler was not built for that kind of offroading..

Cuz uh...I wouldn't dream of using a Jeep for that. Too top heavy and underpowered.

Actually no, not that kind of rallying.. im sure a wrangler wouldnt be good for that job at all!

I live in saudi arabia and we have a lot of open areas with huge sand dunes, what im talking about is more like dune climbing/rally racing... not so much speed but more about handling and such..

otherwise i have been seriously considering a subaru wrx sti for the kind of rallying ur talking about but its way too out of my price range...

but u got me thinking though.. what if i got a wrangler sport and lowered it and lightened it a bit and supercharged it... could that make it better for speed? or is that just a bad idea? of so whats a better option for that kinda thing with the same offroad capability?

What makes the pentastar better?
I have spent some time in KSA, in Dubai right now. I love my Jeep but have spent enough time in this sand I am not sure if it's the best option IMO.

Look at the tires ones are running there for the sand,certainly not rock climbing tires. With the right tires you can go any where there.

What makes the pentastar better?
More Horses.. More Toruque..


the mere thought of lowering your 4x4 Jeep is a sin in the Jeep world so that is out.. Not a ton you can do to lighten it.. Nothing that is at least worth the money in my mind.. Remove the back seat.. But everything else just costs money that you don't really need to spend.. As to the increase horse power and torque.. Like you already caught onto.. The penstar motor is coming to the JK in 2012.. I guess If you wanted to cause people do do it is put a RIPP Supercharger in it.. But that's 6 grand or so with all the parts and what not..

IMO.. I'd say wait for that Penstar if your in need of the 300hp it's gonna give you..

holy shit, i kind of feel like i should have waited 7 months...i thought maybe it would add 50 horses max, but 100? thats a 50% increase...

They are saying it will be close to 300 horses for the 2012 end of the world penstar V6.. I try to warn people who are looking at 2011's all the time but no one has listened yet.. Sorry

i haven't really done anything to it except tint the windows, which i can just peel off.

i don't know if its worth it though. i got a sweet deal on the jeep and i already love it. its a black moutain edition and its great. i wouldn't want to take a hit on the car 8-9 months after i bought it.

is it confirmed that the 2012's are getting the pentastar?

Yeah.. As about as confirmed as it can be.. Obviously they haven't started to make them yet so anything can happen but the the plant that makes the current 3.8 minivan engine is being shutdown from what I have read.. So it's more than highly likely that you will see the penstar in 2012 late 2011.. As to your jeep.. I hear ya.. the Black Mtn is very nice.. and I mean it's only HP.. For the most part since Jeeps are made for crawling not drag racing.. Having the penstar will be a luxury... Not a necessity.. Enjoy that jeep.. Build it.. Play with it as it was meant to be used.. Have fun out there.. Bout the best thing I can say.. Hell. I'm sure the Penstar is gonna be nice but you won't see me trading in my TJ for one ever..

Yes. However, do you have any idea how reliable the Pentastar models will be in the first few years? I don't. Maybe they'll be great . . . maybe they won't. The engine under your hood right now has been reliably powering Chrysler vehicles for years.

I plan on driving my Jeep until gasoline is no longer widely available in the United States. But even if I were to change my mind and want a new Wrangler, it'd be 2015 at the earliest. I want that Pentastar running for at least three years before I'm "in."

The Pentastar has been running in other Chrysler products for a while now. And it's doing quite nicely. There are several versions of it, depending on what vehicle it goes into. I suspect that it's a pipe-dream that the Wrangler will be fitted with the 300HP version.

I'm sure it's a nice engine, but I really doubt that it's the Jesus Engine that everyone is expecting. Chrysler is going to that engine in most everything due to fuel mileage, emissions, and the economics of a single engine that can be modified for specific vehicles.

yea i hear ya. all valid points. its just hard for me to imagine a jeep with 300 horses. it would be sweet

Really? I'm sure they've been working on it for ages, but according to Wikipedia its first applications were in the 2011 model year. See (Chrysler Pentastar engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). And of course, if I read it on the internet it MUST be true.

Either way, none of that accounts for Wrangler-specific "tinkers" that won't truly be road tested until the Wrangler model hits the streets in 2012. Looking forward to hearing people's impressions though as it rolls out.

2016 for me. That way, this one will be paid off. Hopefully I'll be able to keep it and add a second.

Plus, 2016 is the 75th anniversary. They might make a nice model for that.

"a while now" is a relative term. Sorry for the confusion. This year will give a good idea of how it's gonna work. You are right though......there WILL be some tinkering involved in the first few months....maybe even years....of operation in a new vehicle.

If the 2010 wrangler has more power than the GC, I'll eat my shoe. It's just not going to happen.
I'd bet more like 260-280.

But, if you want to do any sort of race that requires speed, as much as I hate to say it, I'd wait for the Pentastar. The 3.8 is adequate, but it's not going to win any races unless everyone else is in stock Samurais and Trackers.......

Okay, so you got 300hp pentastar. Huray. I'd still keep with the diesel....? It's fuel economy is better, has it's torque in the low rpm and, as has been stated before: a jeep is not for speed....

Maybe because here in Europe the 'green hype' is pretty big but buying a petrol 4X4 is first of all extremely expensive to run and secondly absolutely not-done. In certain cities here in holland you're not allowed to drive anymore with your 4x4 and if you do, there's might be some bastard throwing 'tinner' (some sort of paint remover stuff) on top of your car. Afterwards it looks like a tin can...

Not sure why anyone wants the first year models. I rarely ever see the first years without bugs, The best thing to do is wait at least 3 years to see if there is issues especially with the engine transmission combo. Your just being a guinea pig being the first one on the block. I am thinking by the time my 2010 is even thought about trading in they might hopefully worked out the bugs by then. The 300 will be in the car version that receive the motor, I think the Jeep will get something like 280 if I read right. But still 280 hp is nice but it means nothing if something goes bad in 3000 miles or worse 3700 miles.
