Buying a used JK

It's been a few years, but I'm itching to get a Jeep again. I had a '00 Cherokee Sport and an '04 GC. Both times, I was going for a Wrangler and convinced myself to be "practical".

Based on the research, it seems buying an '08 is best as it seems first year models had some issues. Can anyone help clarify that and if I really need to stay away from an '07? Trying to find a hardtop model, if I can get an Unlimited, it would be ideal, but I like the 2 doors as well.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Congratulations on your successful rationalization!! (I kid--my 4 door is actually a very practical family vehicle).

I'm sure there are plenty of 07s on the road that are doing fine, though I've heard there were some issues. A lot will have to do with how well maintained it's been in the interim.

You can add any top you want after market, but you can't make a two door a four door. Just a thought.

Not much guidance in your original post, so I'll just say to look at the undercarriage of any used one on the lot. The condition of the factory (and other) skid plates are likely to suggest how hard it's been ridden on the trails.

If you consider one with a lift or other serious mods already installed, you'll want to run the mods past this forum or know what you're doing. They could look good but ultimately require more work--they've got to be done right.

Otherwise, good luck!

Thanks for the feedback...

I guess some of the issues I read about; transmission cooler running hot from running in 4wd - is that guys who were off-roading? I believe that was an '07 issue that can be corrected. The rest was related to leaks with the hardtops and the manuals.

I know the 3.8 has been around for a while - any reason for me to consider a manual over an auto or vice versa?

I have been looking at Jeeps primarily on dealer lots (financing, warranty etc. - to some it may seem illogical, but it works for me).

It will be my DD and mods will come later.

I also have to say, I've been reading WF for the past hour and know I'm definitely ready to get my Wrangler!
