I found a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara at a local dealership with 40k miles

2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4WD - Cars For Sale De Witt, IA

Here is a brochure. Now I'm planning on going to test drive the vehicle tomorrow but am concerned about rust that maybe underneath the vehicle. I've read the Things to Know when Buying a Used Jeep Wrangler YJ. I have like very little mechanical knowledge of vehicles. In one of the pictures you can see rust on the bottom.

How much is too much rust or does it not matter unless the rust in in a certain spot ( which I'd probably not be able to know if you told me ). The jeep seems like a good deal but wanted some experts on wranglers to let me know if price was good with all the aftermarket stuff and about any rust or anything. Other then that it looks clean.

Looks clean and great miles for an 08. Wouldn't worry about the surface rust on the under carriage. I doubt you'll find an 08 that doesn't look like that. Easy to replace and just a nit pick but that shifter cover thingie would drive me nuts being crumpled like that. Just check for damage under that thing. I'd say most built jeeps like that haven't been wheeled but since he had the carpet pulled and did the lift right, it's probably seen some trails. I'd post up on the JKF site since he has the sticker and see if anyone wants to out the previous owner and see if he's up for questions.

Still can't believe what 08s are going for these days.

Pretty expensive for an '08 if you ask me.
The bumper, winch, lift, & wheels don't add that much value...

And the mileage? I have almost that many miles on my '14. Gotta wonder.

Remember that the '08s had the leaking trans lines, would overheat the trans frequently and fluid would belch up the filler tube.
I wouldn't want a 2008 auto-trans... (pssst; I had one)

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what you mean by posting in JKF forums but I like the fact this jeep has the lift with the tires already but wasn't if it was rode very hard on trails and stuff.

Finished building the jeep and it says the final price is 29K which seems a lot higher then the ones around me. Don't know that I can afford a brand new jeep. I've never built a vehicle from a dealer. Is it really that cheap?

It would be really nice to find the previous owner to see if I could ask him some questions about the jeep. Do you mean post in this forum

JK Forum is a competing forum that's moderated in a way that reminds me of early Soviet censorship.
Forum members proudly declare adherence to the party line displaying the JK sticker on the front quarter.
You might find the history of the beast there.
Enter that realm forewarned though...

I know that this isn't what you asked, but a 2008 has a 3.8L engine and 4 speed automatic that doesn't create a lot of h.p. or torque compared to the current (2012 & up) powertrain. With big tires and all the extra weight that it's dragging around with add ons, it's probably a little under-powered in daily driving situations unless somebody re-geared the axles.

So it sounds like this isn't a good deal. I'll think I'm going to hold off buying it but I'll still probably test drive it because they have some lifted trucks too on the lot and maybe I change my mind. I just wanted to check on the rust I saw on the bottom and if it was a "good" buy.

It is overbooked $500 dollars on NADA not including the aftermarket stuff mainly due to the low miles. KBB has it under booked by about $800 with some of the after market stuff.
