Cam shaft Eng Light

Does anyone have this problem, My check eng light and traction light come on causing my JK 2012 to go into limp mode. Wouldn't allow RPMs to go over 3500. start it the next day and nothing is wrong, it happens most of the time.

I replaced both cam shaft sensors, problem still happening. had the jeep dealership take a look at the wiring nothing wrong was found. Its not under warranty so was hoping I pinpoint the problem and get it fixed.

Any feedback is appreciated

I had this problem and it took the dealer nearly a month to diagnose and it was a huge cluster f*ck. They were throwing parts at it left and right - really glad I purchased the extended warranty as I would have been broke after everything they tried.

So my issue started with a random misfire. It only happened when the engine was in the process of warming up and it did not do it all the time. They were finally able to reproduce it and started throwing parts at it. I will try to find the paperwork and post up a picture. It did involve cam shaft sensors and some solenoid, sorry I am not that good with mechanical issues beyond the basics.

thank you Schirmyver. it sucks cause its out of warranty! it will cost around $600 to replace the right bank cam phaser however I'm not even sure if that is the problem. I read that on the form and suggested to the dealership who had no clue what so ever. been going on for a couple months still no solution.

Let me ask you this, on the days that it has the problem does it startup and run really rough? This was something I noticed but failed to tell the service tech the first couple times I brought it in. From what the service tech told me is that they had a really hard time reproducing the issue until one time out of ten when they started it the idle was really rough and it sounded like an old school bus. If I had thought to mention this the first time he said they might have narrowed it down sooner.

I will try to explain what he told me, but again I am not very good with this. When the engine starts up, the combination of the cam position sensor and the cam phaser are supposed to determine exactly the current timing. Well if one of them goes bad, this starting point becomes random so as the computer tries to advance or retard the timing it doesn't know where it started from. So sometimes it would startup and be close enough to not cause any issues, but other times when it started it would be way off and then it would throw codes and misfire. This kinda sounds like your experience.

It starts without any issues, if the eng light is on it will run like there was nothing wrong with it at all. once the traction light comes on along with the eng light then it runs bad. RPM wouldn't go over 3500. couple of days later no eng light no traction light.. then i drive about 20 or 40 miles and it all comes right back.
I changed the cam shaft sensors, next will be the phaser!

I just got my Jeep back from the dealer today after a similar issue. The first time I brought it in, all they did was a camshaft position sensor. Next day, boom, same thing happens again. (Engine and traction lights go off after a spell over 3000 rpm, and then after that, every gear would go into 'limp mode' around 2800 rpm.)

Today's codes were P0344 and P0369. My paperwork has notes from the tech that say:
"Disassembled engine, removed right side valve cover. Found camshaft phasers not locked into position due to sticking pin. Replaced right side intale (intake?) and exhaust phasers, reassembled engine, bled coolant and test drove."

The parts my Jeep received in the job were:
5184369-AG, description PHASER CA 09008005
5184370-AH, description GEAR CAMS 09008005
5184595-AE, description GASKET CY 09001004

Luckily I'm still under warranty, because all that stuff above is dang near Greek to me. (I ain't the handiest fella.)

The job took basically all day. The way it was described to me was they had to basically tear the whole engine apart to get to what needed fixing.

WOW.. that sucks cause my warranty ran out about 10k miles ago!! I left it at the dealership today so they can replace the phaser based on all the feedback I got.. the scary thing was I had to tell the tech that they should do that! they about gave up!!

I found my old paperwork and they did a poor job of documenting what was done. I had one visit where they replaced the cam position sensor but then I swear they also swapped out a cam phaser and some solenoid, but either they did not document that or I can't find the paperwork.

Well got my JK back last night after replacing the phaser, drove about 20 miles and the problem is back again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love my Jeep but when this keeps happening and it goes in limp mode with your kids in it, it sucks!!!
Called the dealership said to bring it in on Monday so they can open a case with Chrysler, they said they have no idea how to fix it... I mean why have eng codes if you cant fix them!!
UNHAPPY and FRUSTRATED

Sorry to hear that. Like I said it took my dealer nearly a month to fix. I had the cam phaser/position sensor replaced and then the ECU and two coil packs. The only reason for two coil packs is that they replaced one and the new one popped the instant they fired the engine up. I can tell by the wiring looms that they were looking at all sorts of electrical issues. They finally got it fixed and it is running fine now but it was a huge cluster and again thankfully I have the unlimited warranty. That repair bill would not have been fun to see. I wish you luck.

Im curious if the phasers are oil pressure operated,Im guessing they are. Ive done a few F150 cam phasers and I always do a oil pump as well. If you dont have good oil pressure the phasers wont operate correctly. Good luck,I know it can be frustrating.

Any updates on this? Just ran into the same issue this weekend, had the cam sensor replaced before I came on here, friend at a GM dealership said it’s either the cam actuator or oil pressure issue? Said Chrysler needs to take it from here as they have a special tool to keep the timing in place....thoughts? Or better yet, solution???

Thanks!

Not burning oil...got it back today, dealership had it two days, they suspected wiring problem in connector portion of harness for camshaft sensors, they ended up replacing the connector/harness at the cam position sensor and that seems to be the fix as no codes are present anymore and it’s running fine as of now. Drove it about 35 miles today, feels fine, but I’ll wait and see after driving a few more days. Looks like the Wiring harness part number is 68148103-AA $62 part...ended up being $372 with labor...will update if problem returns..

I had the same issue a couple months back and found a broken wire in the wire connector on the camshaft position sensor on the passenger side I fixed the wire and have not had a problem since
