Camping trailer build, jku trunk isnt as big as it looks!

I go camping a few times a year and quickly learned that the truck in the jku isn't as big as it really looks. The roll bar takes up a lot of room.
I'm not done with this yet but so far it turned out awesome. It can hold two 8 feet kayaks and trying to figure out how to mount 2 Yakima bike racks also.

Nice! I realized that too, especially if the dog goes with us

I ended up getting a trailer cargo hitch from amazon, but I like yours much better!

sweet... I bet you can't even feel it back there.
Now imagine having a TJ 1st time we went camping we looked like the beverly hillbillies. Platics tubs straped to the top of the roll bar. It was really funny. I talked to some trailer builders here and the cheapest was $2800.00 for what I wanted.
This is what I did for under $1000.00. The top opens up to become a table and everything is locked up.

Putting my lab in the truck was a major reason for building this too. I still have waterproofing stain I'm going to paint this with.

Little update. This trailer is going to be put up for sale and I will build a second one. It's fun to build. Added a table to the driver side and a water storage for the right side. Also cut the top off this since it can't hold anything.

Maybe mount a spare tire (for the trailer) on the back, then get one of those bike racks that mounts on that spare tire? It would sit under the two kayaks, but not interfere with the storage capacity of the trailer itself. You'd probably have to reinforce that rear wall, to hold the weight of the trailer and two bikes, but it might work.'
Or mount it all on the front, so the trailer's tongue can bear some of the weight?

awesome. i had a dx converted to si all interior, motor, and brakes. ultimately dropped a b16a1 into it and sold it. those cars always have a soft spot for me. looks good for that age. awesome trailer build as well.

Id be happy to donate any crx stuff i still have at my parents house. Ill be visiting them in June. pm me your address, if you will pay for shipping.

Looks like the Harbor Freight trailer. I keep kicking that idea around, but I'm not sure of the process to register a home made trailer in the great state of maryland. Might have to suck it up and take a trip to the mva to figure it out. Looks like a cool project and more satisfying than buying one pre made. Plus, I could tweak it how I wanted as my needs changed.

I think the HF trailer in its stock form wouldn't cut the mustard, but with some mods and improvements it would be just as good as any other trailer on the market.

Those HF are a lot nicer than you guys think. There really isn't much to go wrong with on a trailer this small

Another update. Removed the 1x3 that went across and put a 2x4 on the sides and then mounted a Yakima rack on top.

Looking great. Any idea of the model number for the base trailer you started with?

If anyone has any hesitation these HF trailers aren't a good platform from which to start a project trailer, look no further than what Jeff Scherb is able to do with them. With a little work it looks like they're a very good value.

His definitely doesn't look like either of the the 4'x8' trailer packages:

4' x 8' Utility Trailer - 1720 Lb. Capacity

or

Utility Trailer 4'x8' - Heavy Duty Folding Utility Trailer

I'd guess it's one of the ones in the 40"x48". From the looks of his wheels, it's likely this higher capacity one:

40-1/2" x 48" Small Utility Trailer - 1090 Lb. Cargo Capacity

I've been looking to build a trailer for camping as well but needs to be slightly bigger as we have 3 kayaks and 3 Mountain Bikes. I've been looking at aluminum frames since, living in New England, I've had all sorts of rust issues on steel trailers in the past. 3 of my four wheels completely rusted out on my old 7x14 enclosed sled trailer, frame is fine since it's all aluminum just wish I had got the aluminum wheels too.

Here's a Harbor Freight 94564 1720-lb. 4x8 trailer modified to a little bit smaller size to fit the tub I designed for it. That particular HF frame is very sturdy and can be modified to be even stronger without much trouble.

Here's the modified HF frame, it's got a center backbone for strength, and receivers at both ends for swapping couplers on the front and for putting accessories on the back like bike carriers.

And here it is with the fiberglass tub kit installed:
