Can afford the Sport, but why upgrade?

I have a friend that told me today that they have it in their plans to get a Jeep. She has indicated that she is leaning towards a 4 door Sport. 25k is not out of the budget, but list reasons below on why she should upgrade to a Sahara, Islander, Mountain or Rubi.

Mild off-roading... She does want the capability to do so. I don't ever see her modding it out to do the blacks.. but she does want to hit the bunny hills and whites.

The sport is fine for most people.. do they still offer the rear locker option? If so that might be something to think about vs an upgrade to a rubi etc... and would give her a great deal more enjoyment off road should she get more into that.

The question is.. are you going to do a bunch of upgrades? If so.. then get the lowest base model you can find in your budget... because most of the time you're paying for stuff you're going to remove/replace.

For mild off roading Sports is perfectly fine. Just throw an automatic locker in front and it will do wonders!

Dana 44 is standard in the front for the Rubicon only and for all 3 models in the rear.

the sahara is really not worth the extra money IMO... i bought one for the extra options and now after a few months i really wish i did not. the sport is perfectly fine and for the money saved you can add your own upgraded stereo, navigation, rims, tires, lockers, lift and alot of other things with the money you saved.

i still love my sahara, but i am too the point i would prefer to trade it in and get something else. i think i ended up getting a lemon that has put a bad taste in my mouth. the sahara is a more comfortable ride with all the extras but you can buy all that after market and save some money...so i say stick with the sport and add your own upgrades.

oh yea and for the kind of off roading she wants to do i say the rubi would be a waste of money.

I've had my Sahara now for a little over 2 months and love it.

I've taken it offroad once so far and it did just fine for what I was doing...nothing too hardcore but got her nice n dirty!!

The extra creature comforts are nice and well worth it for me.....

I've even grown to like those dumb looking silver bumper accents!

I wanted a Sahara purely for its comforts. I like the look of painted fenders, I love the power windows/locks. My 07 didnt have any of the dumb silver accents either!

you really do want 3.73 gears at least. I didnt even think they make 3.21s any more for 2010, maybe they do.

the difference in a 6th speed manual?

3.21 = 6th gear, 70mph, 2000rpm
3.73 = 6th gear, 70mph, 2300rpm

Your engine really has no power on freeway when cruising at 2000rpm if you have the 3.21's. If she EVER plans to go up even 1 tire size, dont get 3.21. And I assume 3.21s dont even come with automatics, that would be a disaster.

Like many have said, the sport will get you where you need to go, whether your doing a little bit of off-roading of just street driving.

3.21s would work on an auto if you never ever changed the tire size.. but just barely.

in my opinion after trying different gears in my JK Jeep.. be REAL careful deciding your gear choice. it makes the drive completely different. Even better, drive a few different gearsets and see how they feel. Pay extra attention to freeway rpms in each gearset. Thats the #1 thing i wish i had studied a bit more before buying my Jeep. Mine had 3.21's, I tried 4.10s and they were too high for me. TODAY, I get a 3.73 installed which should be perfect for me.

I have the 2010 Sport with the S package, only difference in the Sahara is the Trim Accents and 18 inch wheels. All the 2010s with automatics I've seen have the 3:73. I get 21 mph with the top on, which is very seldom, top off 19 mph. I love my Sport. With the traction control, on mild offroading you don't need the locker. You can't make it spin the tires. Save your money for all the other goodies you WILL want to add!!

the mango tango is a sweet color..OSU baby..I concur about the upgrades..some dealerships tho can offer a good deal on wheels and tires like there is a great jeep dealership in tulsa that also has a decent offroad shop as well..and arent they offering mopar bucks with the new jeeps?

Your friend MIGHT be able to get a Rubicon lease return with 10,000 miles on it for under 25K.
Even though she doesn't plan on making an ultimate off road rig the Rubicon model will always be worth more money 5 years down the road when it's all paid off.

Just a thought. Saved about 10K on mine and bought a 7 year 70,000 mi bumper to bumper warranty and pre-paid platinum service plan for under 2K and just rolled it into the loan.

if its a good dealership they will look for whater ever you want. usually they just trade a vehicle they have in stock for the one you want

The rubicon is the way to go in her situation. Between the sport, islander, mountain edition, there isn't too much difference besides options and cosmetics.
The Rubicon will come with offroad tires, better differential with front and rear lockers, and the disconnecting sway bar. It already has all the upgrades you would wanna do for light to moderate wheeling.

And just remember if she purchases a jeep and then changes gearing or does other powertrain/driveline/suspension mods, most likely chrysler will void her warranty. Where as if she bought a jeep with all these mods already done...well you should get the idea.
