can the dash take any rain?

Ack it just started sprinkling outside! Just wondering what if any rain the dash can take without causing problems? The only thing on the Jeep right now is a spiderweb shade, hardtop is home and I have no soft top or other solid device to cover it with. I think it's just a quick sprinkle passing over (20% chance of rain and we got it) but I'm still concerned. Debating whether to bail on work early or not.

My TJ gets rained in quite a bit and nothing has shorted out on it but idk about the JK's

Well, it can handle some rain but the radio isn't marine grade and can have problems but that is true for any jeep with a non marine grade stereo. The only real problem is the clock spring in the steering wheel. If that shorts out, it causes a lot of issues and is pretty expensive to fix. One of the members here actually makes steering wheel covers just for this. You can keep a black plastic bag in the Jeep for just in case rain storms just in case

Sound bar does very well in rain. Mine has seen some serious rain in the past with no issues

I had about 4 inches of water in my floor board the other day. All from rain, it was left overnight in a parking lot while I was at work, only issue I have had is the display on my radio went out. But I would not suggest just letting it get rained in just because.

I've found that the position of the header over the windshield and the sun visors keeps most rain off the dash during random sprinkles when my jeep is parked with the top down.

But yeah, the clock spring and steering wheel controls are the real problem with rain as I understand it. The radio too obviously, and probably worse for those folks with the fancy nav systems.

Sprinkles and short rainfalls are generally going to be no problem provided you get to keep the top off for awhile afterward to let the seats dry out. Carpet too if you still have it in. You've got to watch out for mildew on the fabric and cushioning.

I have a 12 jKU with the group nav system and got my entire dashboard and nav rained all over. So bad I had to remove the drain plugs to drain the rain out. My dashboard was quick to dry and left zero issues. My seats dried pretty quick as well. The real issue was the carpet. I left my plugs out for couple of days and ran my ac set on temperate and just blew it on the floor the whole time. Had no issues with mildew. Just make sure you leave the windows off your soft top so it can air out. I also would put the top down when its sunny and the sun will kill any mildew causing bacteria. Hope this helps. Thanks guys. I did end up leaving work early since I didn't trust the other clouds that were coming. Looks like overall I ended up with only about 5 minutes of a light sprinkle though. Yeah I have no soft top, I'm running hard top with a spider shade for the summer right now though since usually July/August are completely dry and depending on the year, a few weeks on either side of that (usually more on the far side). Eventually hoping to grab an ORH top for when I don't have the hardtop on.

Ugh don't risk it!!! And please help!

Hi I woke up this morning and realized we had a brief thunderstorm last night. Not much water, maybe a 1/4 inch in the cup holders. Have had my 2012 jk since Sept 2011 and have gotten used to a little amounts of water when topless/doorless. Weeeeeellllll, now I don't have turn signals, lights, wipers,any of the steering wheel controls (not sure of the radio controls I have aftermarket head unit).... I am thinking clock spring, from what ive read,but am not certain.

If anyone can help let me know...taking it to the dealer this week,let's hope it's warranted.

Late night typing FTL. That should have said that I only have a hard top and it's off for the summer with just the spiderweb shade on for now.

Its probably the clock spring. I went to take a nap and woke up to a jeep full of water so I let it dry out and the next morning my jeep was acting up really bad so I took it to the shop and it was my clock spring. Good luck.

When I took the front tops off my daughter's jeep, I noticed that where the front A pillars reach the roof, the molding pretty much forms a big bowl. And on the driver's side, is the microphone for the hands free phone. Not sure I described it very well, but it seems like a poor design, because any rain would puddle where the built in microphone is. And I can't imagine that could take much, if any, water.

It's your clockspring. I had the exact same thing happen to me 3 days after I bought it. My dealer fixed it under warranty but warned me that its usually an expensive fix and that I need to make sure my steering column stays dry in the future.

My jK took in a bunch of rain about a week and a half ago and it knocked out all of my steering column electronics (Horn, lights, blinkers, wipers were stuck on, etc). I let it dry out for about a week using a combination of sunlight during the day and a dehumidifier inside with the top and doors on. After a week of this, the carpets and everything else was all dried out but the electronics still didn't work so i decided to take it in to the dealer. The dealer replaced the clock spring and everything works again. I am very excited to have my jeep back but not too thrilled with the $600 bill. The sales manager that sold me the car did what he could for me but in the end, the service department wouldn't cover it under warranty. It is an expensive lesson learned that ended up costing me about the same price as the trektop that I had been considering which would have prevented the issue

As for the dash, it can take a little (not so much the radio)...but the dash isn't the problem...it is (as others have mentioned) the clock spring/steering wheel. I had a bit of rain, and until it dried out, my volume control button on the steering wheel was stuck on "up".

Jeep really needs to be building the WRangler in a manner that it can hold up to rain without problems. I know that some government regs make it tougher to do, but it should not be that hard for things to be better sealed/protected.

I have a bikini top and keep a trail cover on it when I am parked. 2x I have covered up after driving home in a torrential S. FL rain (where in inside of the tub gets drenched, but the passenger area stays relatively dry) and in the morning the dampness/humidity trapped inside the trail cover shorts out my dash.

The wipers will be on, even if the control is off; none of the dash comes on, and my lights and signals won't work. Oddly, the stereo does work...?

I let it air out a couple hours and everything works fine.

I have taken to leaving the windows down under the trail cover if the inside gets a soaking...it helps vent out some of the evaporation.

I must have gotten lucky with my 08 jku. Wife was caught with the top down and no doors in a storm. Filled the cup holders and the floors with 3" of water. Pulled the plugs and removed the carpet (real easy) and hung them on a line to dry. Seats dried driving up the high way, left the doors off and pulled the top up to create a wind tunnel. No problems.
I hate and worry about the steering wheel controls on my 13. I wish they would keep the Wrangler a Wrangler.
