Hi, I just brought a 2012 Wrangler unlimited. I live in the US but this vehicle is for the Canadian market.
I want to convert the speedometer background to biased with the MPH and not the KPH. I though if I just got a set of US Speedo after market background I would be able to just replace the existing one and I would be good. However, I found out the Us speed range is from 0 - 100 MPH in the half circle scale. The Canadian range is 0-125 (0-200KPH) so the scale is different so replacing just the background will not match the correct speeds : ( For example currently, the 12 o clock position is 100 Kmh (62 Mph) and on the US accessory gauge the 12 o clock position is only 50 Mph. Anyone have any recommendations? Why would it be different? Please help! Thanks
Because like the OP clearly explained in his question, the Scale is not the same. So the speedo will indicate 50mph when he is actually going over 60mph.
My Guess is probably something that procal can fix, or your local Jeep dealer can probably reprogram for you.
Press and release the left button (on the instrument
cluster) to access the computer displays.
Press and hold the left button (on the instrument cluster)
for two to three seconds to switch from English to Metric
displays
From the 14 owner's manual with connectivity group
Control Buttons

I think the OP is saying that the speedo itself is calibrated differently for Canada than for U.S. So, replacing the guage face will lead to a grossly inaccurate reading. (The needle in in a different place at the same speed.)
Of course he can set all the digital readouts to U.S., but that won't help with the analog speedo.
It doesn't have both mph and kph? The us gauge has kph under the mph, I thought it would just be the other way around for a country using metric units.
I vote have a handy cheat sheet on hand with kph converted to mph for easy reference.

Sorry for the delay guys. I was traveling. Up Hill Bill has it all correct. I can not just swap the background because the 12 o'clock positions are different so the scale is off. The computer English to metric just converts the temp gauge and does not effect the speedometer or the Odometer.
And yes, there is a MPH smaller scale (darker shade) under the larger KPH scale and I can use that. So maybe I am being picky and I just thought someone here might have run into this before with a simple fix... I just wanted to be a perfectionist and if I could get the major scale to be MPH it would be icing on my cake!
With Canadian $$ down many dealerships from Canada open dealerships in the states, for example here where i live a jeep dealer from Windsor opened a dealership in Florida and refuses to sell any used jeep in Windsor. they would rather sell them over there ( that's a profit of 25% more just coz of the currency exchange). i went to try and trade in my 2009 unlimited 60k miles on it to get a 2012 or newer and they were willing to pay 23k for mine because they needed it in florida and they had a 2012 with 20k miles but refused to sell it because they bluntly said we'll get more money in the states for it unless you pay 32k for it.
What year is this wrangler. I'm planning to import my 2012 wrangler and hoping that I'll get the letter from FCA that it's built to US specs. It does have the EPA and DOT markings on the sticker under the hood.
I guess the question you need to ask yourself is.....
Will the cost of the new cluster (>$500), the labor to remove and install (around an hour) and the cost of flashing the new component really be worth having the MPH bolded and the KPH shaded in the background?
Unless you get a really good deal on the cluster and do the swap yourself you are looking at upwards of a $1000 to change the speedometer.
i can understand the dilemma
picture this
cruising down the interstate at 60MPH see a trooper doing radar look down and see 100 on the speedo
instant heart attack
hard to retrain the brain sometimes
I'm confused, can't you just get a GPS and have it display the MPH in digital and look at that ? or purchase an AEV upgrade, they do replace the dials LOL
I can do the GPS thing, but hey, the reason I got a jeep is because I can get what I want!! right?
Is there anyone out there that can do custom guages? Where you give them the range, type of scale (half circle) color etc..etc.. and I can just replace the current background? I see somr software that can print custom background but I can't seem to get it to work on my mac..
As an dual American-Canadian, I would recommend just living with it. You will get used to it after a month or two. It will cost big $$$ to change out the cluster and reprogram it. Money you will never get back and could spend on other things. The Aev Procal wont do anything for this issue. (It is a great tool I would recommend though, used it to turn the DRLs off the headlights and onto the parking lights) My JK is my first metric spec vehicle after spending most my life in the US driving. At first I thought it was going to be a pain but it was not that bad. Some snowbird must have traded it in down there. Exporting a car between the US and Canada is pretty easy but it has to be fully paid off cause you need the title to do it. Anyways, enjoy the Jeep! Crush is a great color. It was a close contender for me at the time but ultimately went Gecko with no regrets.
we just need to have the right member see this thread
no way that jeep has different electronics in the speedo
there has gotta be a flash mod to get the needle calibrated to US specs
then with just the MPH aftermarket overlay you will be golden
good luck
just a thought but for the time being if you trim some black electrical tape or something similar to mask the kph portion of the speedo it would make things simpler till you get a more permanent fix

Now we're back to what I was thinking. Make sure you are in the English mode for your settings and see if the speedometer matches up with a GPS. If not, it should be something the dealer could flash. I would think the dealer you bought it from would take care of that for you.
English mode has no effect on the speedometer, just units of measure on the trip computer (km/miles, ltr per km vs mpg, F/C) I keep mine on English mode cause I prefer Fahrenheit for my temp readings. I will be surprised if a dealer can flash the needle position cause it is all likely tied to the cluster. Most dealers in the US wont be familiar with Canadian specs and vice-versa. It will be interesting to hear if the OP has any luck without replacing the whole thing.
Agree with DeckoJK.
Most dealers may not even know there is a difference between the Canada and US specs. I even think changing the cluster (which is were I would pull the plug on this project) may nto have a effect because where is the speed computed? In the cluster itself? Or somewhere prior to that?
I was just hoping I could get custom backgrounds made with the scales I provide for them that match the ones I have, but just change the numbers to match MPH.
I'm in England and some years back imported a Canadian TJ. I got used to the dials pretty quickly. My GPS also displays vehicle speed, and that can be switched between KPH and MPH.
My current 2013 JK is from USA, which means its MPH centric. When I travel in Europe, I can still read the smaller KPH, but again, my GPS is switchable.
Friends use a free iPhone app called....Speedometer!
Get used to it, and while you're at it, have a glass of maple syrup, give your polar bear a bone, have a seat on the chesterfield and put the hockey game on because using canadian units of measure will surely turn you into a straight hoser
You could make your own overlay with some poster board and crayons that has the scale correct.
