Cargo Hammock

Don't know if I've seen something like this before (and didn't find it after a search), so I thought I'd post a quick note on a cheap mod I just did. For less than $20, you can get a cargo net/hammock with dividers that holds items in the rear cargo area (I had one sitting on a shelf from an SUV I had years ago). I moved 4 of the cargo tie-downs from the floor of the cargo area up to the hardtop bolts, then used carabiners to hook on the cargo hammock.

Plan to get 6 of the cargo tie-town loops from the dealer (around $2-3 each) and replace the ones I moved, plus add 2 to the rear most hardtop bolts, so the hammock can be moved farther to the rear if my wife needs it closer to the swing gate.

Takes about 5 seconds to undo the 4 biners and remove the net and get it out of the way, and the tie-down loops flip up and back, then sit flush on the hardtop. Don't think there could/would be enough pulling stress to cause any problems with the hardtop/bolts, but I'll keep an eye on them.

Thanks to everyone else that has posted so many helpful tips/mods/etc. - I've gotten a lot from this forum. Hope somebody finds this useful.

Lightbulb

I put it to you that the idea of extra loops up at those points ALONE was totally worth the price of admission! The cargo net is goose gravy!

It appears in the picture that where the net is hanging could perhaps be secured at the bottom to the two loops directly beneath, reducing sway as well.

Now..I gotta get more of those loops! This is likely my next mod!

EDIT

If no one objects, I'd like to officially dub this awesome idea the "jsb432 Cargo Enhancement Modification"

Thanks for the props folks - I'm sure I wasn't the first to do this, probably not the first to post it either, but I appreciate the positive feedback!

FYI, the Mopar part number is 55361485AA, and I've seen them for a little over $2 each from some online Jeep part stores. Will check with some local dealers on Monday to see what they'll charge (probably closer to $3-4). Worth it I think, since the closest I could find at the big home improvement stores was pretty lame picture hanger loops. Smaller hardware stores may have something closer though.

I agree, there's lots of things those loops can be used for up in those locations, that cargo hammock is just one. And yes, the lower loops could definitely hold the bottom to stop swaying while moving.

I also picked up a Mountainsmith Modular Hauler from sierratradingpost dot com to go back there when we need more organized storage. Not as "custom" as all the various saddle bags and specialized fitting storage options made to tuck into various nooks in the Wrangler - but it's also not as pricey, and pretty easy to put in/take out as needed.

strider - no problem changing the name, whatever works!

I found a place online and ordered a set of six for mine at two dollars and change per, plus a couple of extras in case they end up being needed. That part number did the trick after generic searches came up with Jack and...well they weren't that successful.

I'm just a fan of practical common sense kinds of mods, and that one is great.

Cheers. I just got 10 in the mail yesterday, 6 going in today, 4 going to my brother. 10 was the most I could find - not a single dealer near me had them in stock and most could only locate a few. Called quite a few of the online Jeep parts guys (usually just dealers that sell online) and even they had to get them from their distributor/warehouse and the most any one could find was 10. Makes sense I guess, as they aren't likely to break and they aren't a commonly needed spare part.

BTW, I took the hammock out (store it in the bin under the cargo floor) and just used the loops (and some rope and bungees) on the passenger side to secure a bunch of loose items to that side while leaving the driver's side clear for the dogs. Pretty handy.

Thanks. I have a net that will work but need some bracket loops. Don't want to walk around the big box store looking for them.

I went here: http://www.directchryslerparts.com/ selected my vehicle (only goes to 2011, no matter) entered 55361485AA in the part number box, and selected my quantity.

I'll be doing the actual install this afternoon at my sister's place during our family get together, as my bro has the right size Torx bit for the job, (and I never got to it at work) so I'll take my photos then.

This mod has been done before as mentioned, so if you are really jonesing for photos you can find them on other sites, but I'll post mine as well when I get home.

Not sure what photos he's looking for? It's pretty clear what they look like from the photos I posted in the original post, no?

Why would you ask for photos and a link in posts 9, 11 and 15, when all the information is in posts 1, 5 and 8?!? It's not like you have to spend an hour reading through a 200 post thread. Too lazy to google the part number and select from one of the hundreds of online stores selling them, well, maybe I can understand that, but too lazy to hit "page up" once or twice and then read for 30-60 seconds?!?!?

Ha! Obviously I wasn't picking on you - just venting on lazy posts.

Your pics came out great and put any questions to rest though, so thanks for posting!

[BTW, the Natural Green looks awesome, we wanted it, but we're near Boston and the nearest dealer that had one two months ago (just before we ordered the Cherry Red) was down near you in Princeton - and they weren't interested in a dealer swap (we had a trade too).]

Guess you'll have to wait for someone else to post a link to a place with a better price then!

I just ordered mine and no, they don't want $15. $15 is just a place holder, it says when you check out that you will be charged the actual amount of shipping.

Looking forward to this simple mod. It is a grea idea.

Well that is disappointing for something they can drop in an envelope. I tried to maximize my shipping and ordered some new cabin filters too, same $15 quoted.

Good idea. Will do that next order.

Paying $15 to get $13.32 worth of parts does not dampen my enthusiasm for this mod. It is still the best cheap mod I've seen so far!

I wonder if they're noticing the increased sales of those buggers every time some Jeep guy post the idea on a forum?

You know they do.
Shouldn't take long before Quadratech and 4Wheel Drive hardware stock them.
