Curious to hear about fuel options for long treks. I understand it's rare to not encounter a refuelling point before you hit empty these days, but still would love to know what accessory options are available to mount a fuel reserve on a jeep. I currently live in north Canada and looking to do some long trips, quite possibly to some remote areas. I appreciate any insight from the community.
Smittybilt makes a nice holder that fits any Jerrycan. I have it and a 20 liter Jerry can with spout. I don't permanently mount them, but when I am going where I think I might want the fuel, I ratchet-strap the holder to a rear rollbar leg..
Most aftermarket bumper vendors make some sort of adapter for Jerry cans and or rotopax. Our jeep has the rockhard Jerrycan holders that have been adapted for rotopax.
There's a company in Australia that makes larger fuel tanks called "The Long Ranger".
They are kind of expensive but you may want to check them out: :: The Long Ranger :: Chrysler Jeep Wrangler
I like my Rotopax set up. I can stack 2 3 gallon tanks on my spare tire. With a 22.5 gallon capacity I haven't needed them yet but I wheel with some guys who have older TJ's and CJ's so I usually just carry it for them. I will be doing some trips this summer that I will need it.
Also, a buddy of mine made this custom set up where he can carry 12 extra gallons. I think it is pretty slick. Rotopax usually has a sale on blemished tanks on their website. I got two 3 gallon tanks for the cost of 1 and I can't find the blemishes. I think right now they are selling 4 gallon blemished tanks.
Here are some pics of his home made carrier. He still has to paint it but I like it. I also threw in a pic of mine although I usually only carry one 3 gallon tank when we're out.
Thanks for the suggestions and pictures. Some things to consider! I had a hard enough time exploring on a long road trip with a car, but now with a jeep I will always be wondering whats over the next hill, around the next corner, or down that side trail. I like the idea of mounting a few jerry cans off the back and out of the way.
On a side note: Anyone ever been out and had to consider turning back due to fuel concerns?
I run rotopax off my LoD your carrier.
Another option I didn't see anyone mention is Daystar cans and mount options.
You can also get a larger fuel tank if you really mean business!
Thanks for the info and pictures. Any one else have pictures of options they have or suggestions?
