I had a Cobra 75 in my last Wrangler and I am debating on what to put into the new '17 Wrangler. The Cobra is nice because of it's size but it is expensive. The uniden 510/520 are small and inexpensive but I don't know if the included 'mount' system will allow me to mount it in the JK or if I need something like the Quadratec offering to mount on the side of the console.
What are you using and where is your preferred mounting location?
I have had a Cobra 75 for a couple of years and it has worked well for me. I don't have an external speaker though. Where is everyone mounting their speaker. I haven't had any problems at slow speeds on the trail, but highway speed with the top off could use help. I like the fact that you can store the 75 in an under seat lock box when it's not needed. One less thing in the open to walk away when the top is off.
Mine is right on the speaker bar directly in front of the map lights. Essentially right behind my head. Ill snap a picture of it later today for you. The wire is routed behind the roll bar padding to the unit behind my glove box. Im really happy with the location, its very unobtrusive and i cant see it in my rear view mirror.
I use the Cobra 75 as well. I put the unit in the bottom of my console. I then put a small piece of plywood on top of it. Looking in the console all you see is the mic. When in use, I hang the mic on a clip on the grab bar. When not in use, it's out of the way.
I have an uniden 510. No real issues with it (fuse holder did break so now it is rapped in electrical tape to keep it together). I used the quadratec mount. I knew I was going to use the overhead portion for an SPOD
I am using the Uniden 520. I went with it because it has the speaker built into the unit and not the mic so it is a bit louder. I mounted it over the rearview mirror so there is no need for an external speaker mounted.
Also went with the 520 over the 510 incase I decide to add an external microphone I have that option.
I got a Cobra 75 and mounted it in a crevice next the parking brake. the output lead is zip tied in place to remain flush with the parking brake's brush guard so that I can easily attach the Rx/Tx when i need to use it, but its otherwise concealed.
