CB radios

Looking to do an install for a CB. Just curious what the better brands are? Ones to avoid? Any other info that will help me decide...and I don't want to spend a fortune, just something to communicate with fellow keepers out on the trails. Maybe a couple mile range I guess.

Cobras good. Cobra 75 is what I use. All built into the mic. So no big box. Hid the little box behind the glove box.

Have you even looked? There are tons of options under $50. The weak/strong point of a CB is the antenna, I'd be more concerned with that.

Yeah I've looked...that's the price I've found for majority but different brands. Even tho they are all pretty similar in price, but some brands/models gotta be better than others. And antenna will be where I invest most, but again I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm guessing about $150 for a decent set up

Look into Cooltech llc and get a cb radio. Uniden 520, or cobra 19dxiv. It's basically the same. The installation of the antenna will be the difference maker and of course tuning the antenna.

Cobra, Uniden, Midland are the majors. They all work fine. Some models have more goodies, like fancy lighting or more chrome. Depending on your use and budget, getting one that also has weather radio can be useful.

Really don't want to go through the expense, hassle, and visibility of an installed unit. Are there any self-contained handheld units that are tolerable (or minimally adequate)?

I just bought the conra 75, firestick, mount (rear tire), 18' coax, hardware and spent $200.00.

Took about an hour for the entire install. Hid all the wire, and mounted the little box behind the glove box. I wouls say for me, it was well worth it.

Are there any Bluetooth CBs that work through the Jeep's speakers via Bluetooth?

That would be a nice feature.

Cooltech. Got the Cobra75, gate mount, mic mount. Cable, antenna $200 easy install. You can get it with a 3' or a 4' antenna or take $10 off for no antenna and do your own thing.

The Midland 75-822 is a handheld with a lot of features like memories, last channel recall and multiple power options including rechargeable and cig lighter. The downside is the range is limited with the flex antenna but you can also hook it to a Jeep-mounted antenna. That's what I did and couldn't be more pleased. I don't have to worry about it being ripped off and even my Firestick II antenna is detachable.

I also saved some bucks by getting the Truckspec side mount thru Amazon and mounted it on the back of the license plate holder. It was only $18 instead of the $90 or so for the Cooltech kit.

I use the Cobra HH 38 WX ST for when I'm on the trails and it works great. If I have to get out and help somebody with spotting I don't have to yell I just use my handheld.

I haven't gone myself yet, but my online research seems to show that the only store to find them on the shelf is Fry's. I plan on buying one soon too.

If there is a truck stop (TA or other) nearby, they usually have everything you'll need for a complete system. They typically carry high end Cobra's and lower end Uniden's as well.

I went with a Midland handheld and a mounted 48" antenna with quick disconnect. The times I use it its great and the times I have no need for a CB you cant tell I'm even wired for it.

Is your antenna magnetic?
I was considering the same type of setup.

I am thinking of getting a magnetic mounted antenna up front, run the wire through the hole in the firewall to a handheld unit. I don't think I'll want it on my jeep 80% of the time, so it will be easy to setup and take down the times I do want it (road trips or trails etc).

I am very new to CB radios and looking to get one for the jeep. Does the antenna size increase the range? Also I heard good things about the firestik antenna - does the antenna in this package compare. Or should I order the antenna separately?

As somebody else asked - is it that hard to tune the radio? Any detailed steps on what needs to be done?

If you are going to use a mag mount occasionally don't use the firewall hole, it just takes time. Run the cable in the door jamb. The weather stripping will protect it.

TA has Cobra 19s on sale for 39.95, bought bthat and a rubber duck style magnetic mount antenna (not the best I know, but good enough for a mile or so) just to throw in the Jeep when going offroad. There is no cell service where I go but its an OHV park and they monitor the CB, might save some walking. Plus if you ever go with a group its nice to have and you dont need much range.

I wanted to mount a real antenna but having a soft top with a daily driver I dont need some crackhead seeing the antenna or radio mount to go exploring with a boxcutter.

No, I have the teraflex spare tire mount kit. The quick disconnect for the antenna is great since I only use the CB when I'm on the trail in a group. I didnt want anything permanently mounted since I dont use it that often.

^im just wondering...since I don't have the quick disconnects, can't I just unscrew the antenna and drive without it? Will it mess up the tuning if I do?

My concern was that the cable could hurt the integrity of the seal. These Jeeps are so prone to leaks, and mine is one that doesn't, and I don't want to alter that seal.

Good point on the time factor. I hadn't tried it, so I don't know how much time it would take. I thought maybe 15 minutes each time? Is it harder than that?

The seal is pretty pliable in the dash area where you would bring the cable in. As long as its the smaller coax cable I dont think it will damage the door seal, maybe if you left it for a month the seal might deform a bit.

I looked at the Cobra 75 and the Midland handheld one too. Both get great reviews. I ended up with a smaller regular unit (Uniden 520XL) and people say I come in clear. I like just having to hold the mic, but on my 4Runner, I am considering the Cobra 75.
