Changing differential fluid

Changed my front and back differential fluids today. Read a post on this site, seemed easy enough, didn't remove the covers, just changed the fluid. 4 quarts of 75w 90 mobile 1 and a oil fluid pump. Took about an hour. Gotta love this site....lots of good info and tips.

Quick question though. I have a 2008 JK, and the owner's manual says to use 80w 90, but all the threads here suggest 75w 90. What's the difference?

Not enough of a difference to be concerned about. Just be sure that if you have a LSD to use additive or synthetic that already has it.

Synthetic oil typically only comes in 75w90 and regular oil is 80w90.

Ok. Makes sense. Thanx for the post and clarification.

Here is a follow noob question...what is a limited slip differential (LSD). How is it different from stock and how do I determine what my jeep has?

An LSD is a kind of locker for your differential. It does not fully lockup, hence the limited slip, but tries to keep both wheels spinning at the same rate.

Factory you can have a clutch type LSD installed; my rig has one. Check the build sheet to see if you have it,

Was there much sludge at the bottom? I extracted what I could with a rolled paper towel. Did not dare to take the covers off for the fear of leaks. 2010 Rubi here.

Shouldn't be any sludge. Any metal particles should have stuck to the magnetized drain plug. Removing the covers and not getting leaks is a fairly simple procedure.

The idea of a build sheet was mentioned...Could you get a build sheet from the dealer a few years after buying it new?

The back was far worse than the front. It was grey and thick, but no sludge.
