Changing shifter knob on 2008 JK

Hello All--

I am new to this forum and thought it would be a good place to get general as well as specific info on my 2008 Jeep JK.

I apologize if this has been addressed before but I am looking for information on removing the shifter knob so that I may remove the rubber boot and replace the plastic trim bezel with something else. I have read somewhere that you have to remove a wedge and rock the knob left and right to get it off. Is that true? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

I also placed this thread in the new member section by mistake so please ignore it there.

Thanks in advance.
Hello all--

I am new to your cite and am very glad to be here. The reason I have decided to come aboard is because I am a first time Jeep owner and felt that this a good place to get general and specific info about my vehicle.

I am currently trying to replace the shifter bezel trim piece that was plastic to one that is aluminum. My question is: Can anyone tell me the secret to removing the factory shifter knob? I have read somewhere that you need to remove a wedge and rock the knob left to right. Is that correct? Any and all help would greatly be appreciated. Oh yes, the vehicle is a 2008 JK two door 3.8 L with manual transmission.

The manual knob you just need to pull straight up and it will pop right off. I've taken mine off twice to replace a failed e brake assembly and eventually I replaced the stock knob w aftermarket.

After reading several confusing posts about all the J's and someone finally did post this, the way I did it and I am sorry I don't remember who it was but he was dead on.

The bottom cover comes off with a thin screwdriver real easy. Have someone hold tension on the shift rod with some sort of strap to keep it from wobbling and absorbing the impact, using a 1/4" wide screwdriver hammer upward underneath the knob where the cover removed earlier will hide any marks you may put on it doing this. I don't know exactly how it works but there is some sort of detent that keeps the knob on the stick. I believe the trick here is to hold tension on the stick and it will pop right up. It goes back on super easy. Just don't forget to put that cover on first.
