Glad I found this thread. 2700 miles and I was wondering what that noise was. I thought I had a slipping serpentine belt or pulley. Thanks for the info.

That sucks man.. i've been there before on the noise you just can't get to reproduce. How much would it be to replace the pump on your own? Yes, the stealership would replace it free, but you would need to take the time to bring it in, possibly miss work etc.. I always factor that stuff in..

Just got mine back from the dealer for a high pitched squeal at idle that disappeared when i revved the engine. I thought it was maybe the fan but Chrysler said it was particles in the coolant from the initial fill. They changed out the coolant and so far so good.

Yeah, the dealer thought it was the water pump but Chrysler said replace the coolant first. Then if the sound persists replace the pump. So they changed the coolant and tested for the noise and it seems to have gone. Weird. If the noise comes back (it was intermittent before) I'll check back here.

Pump "Bushings"

All I know is what experts tell me. My VW mechanics and Jeep mechanics call them bearings.
Might be a regional thing.
Does the brass "bushing" not BEAR some forces? Mightn't it be serving the purpose of a bearing. Mightn't a brass "bushing" be a type of bearing (but not, of course, bearingS)? If the design were for 2 brass "bushings", mightn't they then be referred to as bearingS?

Large stationary motors and generators use a type of bearing that looks like two brass things that look like bushings where oil is injected between the concentric "bushings" to support the shaft on a cushion of oil. I forget what that type of bearing is called, but I never heard them referred to as "bushings". In slang we called them rings.

Maybe automotive water pumps have brass bushings somewhere, but isn't there something somewhere BEARING the forces of weight and orbitting tendencies?

It's Ba-a-a-ck!

The water pump's squealing again. This time it's the constant whistle at idle but at the same pitch and volume as the chirp from the original water pump.

I told the service writer they'd have to idle it about 4 hours to start the whistle, but, of course, the "diagnostician" couldn't hear it. So now I'm supposed to drive it in when it's whistling so someone can hear it but it's a huge runaround getting any service scheduled there so, when they get to it, I'm sure they won't be able to hear it again.
Maybe they're all confused because I used the word "bearing".
Maybe they'll at least change the coolant.
I thought it was weird they reused the coolant from the first bad pump, but, hey, I don't even know that a device that bears forces is not called a bearing.

The filing cabinet is blocked by a family project so I still haven't put a fine point on the build date for y'all.

Sleeve bearing. Bushing. Doing the same thing. Look at the main "bearing" from a crankshaft and you might call it a two-piece bushing.

No it was pretty steady. It's at the dealer right now, I will know if that fixed it sometime tomorrow but I doubt it.

Gotta 2013 w/ 1700 miles on it. It's making that noise occasionally now. I know if I took it to the dealer it wouldn't make the noise for them and would be a waste of time. I guess I'll wait and see what happens.

So my noise has quieted down a bit from this video but is still constant. I decided to make an appt at the stealership. When I crawled under, it sounds like it is coming from the water pump but we shall see.

Unhappy Mine Goes Away with RPMs

Both of my water pumps' noises only happened at idle and the chirping of the first pump went away when revved slightly and the current water pump's whistling goes away when revved slightly.

Maybe I caught them earlier than some folks might. Some guys here didn't notice theirs until pointed out by trail broes. I, on the other hand, am married and little noises and smells don't get to go unnoticed for long or I really hear some noise. Plus there seems to be a temperature function and it gets hot here so I'm likely to get the noise sooner and more often. I didn't hear a thing all winter.

THAT sounds BAD. I don't know if eventually mine would have sounded like that.

I'm not a professional mechanic but I have driven probably a million pleasure miles in older vehicles and that does not sound like any water pump I've ever had. They usually squeal or rattle until they seize and the belt squeals for a second before it breaks.

Well, of course after no call I headed up to the dealer. They replaced the alternator and what a surprise, it still makes the noise. So now they have the jeep and are waiting on Chrysler. All with out a rental. I hope it hit hard when I told them that its pretty bad when I have to barrow my parents car, and they were looking at a 42 thousand grand Cherokee, makes them question their decision...

First Water Pump Already Replaced Once

[QUOTE=
@Stormeister.. did they ever replace the pump the first time around?[/QUOTE]

Yes, that sad story was already on another thread I couldn't find when I started this one and I didn't want to spam up the place even worse.

On the FIRST water pump replacement, I drove away and within a block I heard a little squeal that stopped, the power steering lost power, and the temperature guage started rising.
I drove back to the dealer, opened the hood, and there was this ball of black spaghetti near the lowest pulley where the belt used to be.
On that other thread guys were saying how the belt adjustment was super critical.
In my case the supervisor and technician looked pretty sheepish so I didn't pimp them too hard. There were also messages on that other thread about the poor quality of Jeep "service", so I chalked it up to that.

Hour and a half later I was on my way. Chrysler or somebody else paid for it all. I was miffed that I had to wait around their waiting room instead of at home since I live so far away by the time the shuttle got me home it would have been near time to pick me up, all when a block longer test drive could have saved me more home time to live out my paltry little life.

Now I get to look forward to my third water pump, second replacement. Luckily I'm retired with more vehicles than household members so I can hassle with those guys 40 hours a week. But I have more enjoyable ways to spend my retirement.

Water pump noise.

There is a bulletin concerning the chirping from the water pump. Chrysler will change it free of charge if under 60000 kms but they changed the serpentine belt first. Its a defective part. My dealer assures me that the new one will be free of defects as they replaced broken pumps with ones that were sure to fail.

I think I have this problem too. Odd and random chirping. Willie, any chance you have a link to the service bulletin? Thanks.

I'm at 15,500 miles and have had the pump replaced already. The new one went in at about 8k, but just started making noise this week. Back to the dealer I go...

You should be fine. At the early stages, the squeal is the shaft bearing having some play in it. Far from pump failure, but still not a good thing.
