After much discussion the wife and I have decided that we are going to be joining the ranks of Wrangler ownership. My first car was a wrangler (1990) and my wife has always wanted one. We don't have kids yet, and would like to buy a wrangler as a fun car before needing to buy "family friendly" vehicles in a couple of years. Originally we were planning on purchasing a new 2012 base-model (possible upgrades at a later time), but unfortunately there are no base-models in our local area. This has led us to three options and we are looking for input from all you experts to help make our decision easier.
1) A new 2012 Wrangler. Has a upgraded speaker system, upgraded tires, leather wrapped steering wheel.
2) a used 2010 base jeep wrangler with (15,000 miles). No bells and whistles. Has a few minor scratches and some stains on the roof (soft-top), other than that it is in great condition.
3) Wait for the dealership to get a 2013 base-model.
The difference in the price between the 2012 and 2010 is currently $4,000 (but who knows next time we go to the dealerships) We are also figuring in the difference in warrenty, (1yr for used, 3 for new) interest rates, (new vs used) and the fact that it just nice to have a new new car.
Resale value difference: As much as I would love to, We won't be keeping this jeep for the next 2 decades. So what will the resale value difference of a 2012/2013 vs. a 2010? I don't plan on putting more than 8,000 miles a year on it, so the miles will be low. Will the new engine be a huge factor in resale value?
2012 vs 2013 price: From my understanding, there was no price hike between a new 2011 and a new 2012. Will this likely be the case this year?
All feedback is appreciated. We have been thinking alot about this and can't seem to make a decision. Seems like we change which way we are leaning every hour or so.
I have a 10 and it's a great JK, but if I was doing it in your position for a 4K difference I would get the 12. All positives: New, warranty, choice and yes, the 3.6 and trans. if you get an auto. Having a 3.8 w/6spd and 4.10's I have no complaints. Good luck. For a few thousand you'll like the 12. Test drive both and then judge price, condition, what you're willing to pay, etc.
future $ is speculation; past history suggests great resale for good condition Wranglers.
I got a great price ona 15000 mile 3 year old show-room condition Sahara. After adding 1 1/2 year more use, the book is still more than I paid for it.
Look around, figure what you want/what you're willing to pay.
That "$4000" is nearly $100/month for 3 years extra.
My own year-long search revealed these basic price groups:
"like New" something less than 20,000 miles
"almost new" something less than 40,000 miles
"used" up to about 80,000 miles
"good running condition" up to about 120,000 miles
"still runs good" up to over 150,000 miles
"needs work" and "parts"
Each one takes a jump downward in asking price....which the older/more decrepit it gets, the less the actual 'selling price' becomes.
The longer they've been inert, the less $ is required to haul them home.
The newer JKs to me represent an impressive mechanical/comfort improvement over the earlier models.
The essentials for my own decision were 1) no leak Freedom top; 2) coil springs; 3) "good" economy/comfort/reliability. Keeping 2 years or 10 depends entirely on how satisfyingly accurate my choices were.

It really is about what you want. Do you want to spend the 4k on something else? (upgrades, a new toy, house, kids, etc...)
I bought brand new and LOVE IT (25 miles). Pretty much no regret.
Friends and family asked why I bought new. I just tell em its what i wanted.
