The difference between a CJ with chrome and a JK with chrome is that the JK stuff is all ABS plastic with chrome paint on it and 3M double sided tape to hold it on. It's fake!
I have seen chrome tastefully done on a few Wranglers but it really depends on the color and other accessories. If done right it can kind of look somewhat okay on black or white Wranglers but looks like dog vomit on Tank. I have been on the planet plenty long enough to realize what I find unattractive may not actually be what everybody thinks so I just squint as I walk by and pretend not to notice.
Chrome on classic cars looks good. Chrome on Harleys looks good. I'm not a fan of it on modern vehicles.
Plastic that is chromed is often actually just chrome paint. Even if it is real chrome, electroplating plastic doesn't stick as well and may bubble and flake off easy.
Although, metal that is actually chromed through legit chrome plating process is much tougher and durable than painted surfaces. Resists scratching quite a bit because it's an electroplating process, not just painted onto the surface. Painted rims scratch easier and I see them with flaked paint a lot. It requires a thick clear coat to keep from scratching off immediately. But its easier to repair and touch up the paint.
If you want durability without plating, you gotta go powder coated. Or put on a bunch of clear coats.
