Chrysler extends warranty for pentastar heads

Great news. I went through 2 heads before 25K and now have 62K on my Jeep. 10 years and 150K miles extended warranty is great.
News: Chrysler stands behind heads

Is this head issue limited to only US vehicles? I saw that it only referred to US dealerships.

You are correct that it states US dealers. I do not know if this will be extended to the rest of the world but hope it is.

What is the issue with the heads? Is it specific to 2012's?

LoL! Can't tell if you're joking... But if not, here's a thread with 5,000 posts about it.

Update on ticking Pentastar..new head...

Oh, and it's 2012 specific... Anything with build date before July 25, 2012 I think.

Early 2013's as well. So it impacts those built in the summer of 2012. I can't remember the cut-off date.

Here is the notice:

http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0900214.pdf

The note, in bold, says it applies to vehicles with the pentastar built prior to 7/25/2012

Yup, so any 2013's built in the summer of 2012 (prior to July 25th) have the AB heads (which were still bad). After that, all JK's got the AC heads. I can't remember when the cut-of was for the AA heads....sometime in the early summer of 2012 as well.

They either came to their senses or the legal department decided this was the best course of action.

All it takes is an aggressive law firm to file a class action.

Thanks for posting! After having the changeout fairly early on, the engine - and everything else - has been great on mine. This gives me some piece of mind.

Since they chose not to do a recall, it seems the only prudent action they could take.

A few very angry, just out of warranty, consumers could really blow this one up on them with all of the information available on the interwebz...

I wonder what happened to the what was it? "Only 1% of Wranglers sold"...

Now we find out their reliability testing was performed with strict controls. You bet this was a class action waiting to happen. This would really tarnish the brand as the go-anywhere vehicle as long as you fill it with Chrysler spec gas.

There wouldn't be many 2013s at all. Production started July 23 2012. My jeep was built on July 27 2012(hour was 17) and, by the vin, I'm one of the first 750 units built. Since jeep builds 700 per day, there wouldn't have been any rolled off the line before the 26th. It's also interesting, July 25th is the 207th day in the Julian calendar. From the pentastar head thread, there was a TSB about replacement heads needing a julian build stamp of 2072 or newer to ensure it is the new design. ( mine are 201 and 202)

Let's hope they do the same for the 2014 oil cooler/adapter issue, which actually appears to affect a higher percentage of vehicles than the head issue.

It got a response so I guess my wording was good. I knew about the issue however I guess I did not know the exact dates of the problem.

We still love our J/k's!

Does this protection only apply to the original owner? What if you buy a used 2012 and then the head needs to be replaced?

This is great news! Just had my head replaced in April. I was never impressed with the performance of my pentastar engine. I thought replacing the head would help. 500 miles on the new head and no change. Runs like it did before. Sometimes when I take off from a start, it seems to pulse a little. (I am not sure if pulse is the right word) I just know when you put your foot on the skinny petal you expect to start moving smoothly. Not hesitating with a slight sputter. I think a trip back to the dealer is in order. Sorry about my rant.
Just glad to hear this news.

It will be covered if under the time/mileage regardless.

This is some of the best news I've seen. As a Semi retired person, my Jeep is a Nice Day Use vehicle and as such get's very low miles put on it. As a 2012 with only 8000 miles on it, I was getting concerned that what happens IF I have a bad head and it's at 12,000 miles and it's 4-5 years old? Then what?

So for me this is very good news.

If you have 2012 and 2022, looks like you have the AB head. Better design than the AA troubled version but it was further re-designed after 2072 which was the AC head. Hopefully you will be included in this warranty extension.

Mine is a 2013. I think all 2013s build in the regular production runs will have the new head. There may be a few done earlier though, to make sure everything will run smooth when full production starts. Archer would know if that's correct. Also, keep in mind the new design heads were put into engines for production before the service heads. Chrysler got a bunch of flack for that.
