CJ7'er soon to be JKUR owner...question...

So I have been looking for a Tan 2012 Rubi for about a month now to no avail. I have found a Tan 2011 loaded with every option. How much of a difference is the 80 hp and 25 ft. lb. of torque?

Also, I see a white 2009 Rubi with a fair amount of AEV mods and other mods for $16000 on ebay. It only has 30K miles. Does that look to good to be true?

tan production on 2012s was only a month or 2, they are rare. I missed the cut off date by a few days. The 2012 is night and day different compared to the 2011

I believe the tan in '12 is virtually impossible to find at this point. There have been several threads on folks searching for them.

As for that 2009, I'd be wary. Seems awfully low-priced to me...worth checking out, though. Maybe the owner's in tax trouble.

The 3.8 is night and different from his 258 or 304.

I agree, the 2012 is a lot better performance wise and the interior on the '11 and '12 are nicer than the previous '07-'10. I would comprimise on color for a '12 or get that '11 and re-gear.

When I get done with my 304 build, that will for sure be true ..... in favor of the 304!

Thank you all for the replies.

Daniel,
I believe the '11 and '12 Rubi's both have the 410 rear gear, do they not?

I am still torn because I really want the tan color and I can also get the '11 for about 5K to 6K less than a '12. I also do not think I'll be able to wait for the '13 colors to come out to see if it'll be available and thats also a long ways down the road.

Has anyone here done any mods to the '11 engine to get more horses and torque out of it?

I got a Superchips tuner for my '10, and it helped the 'feel' of the automatic transmission tremendously. I'm not sure it actually increased torque, but it sure makes it a lot more responsive. BUT, I'm not sure if the chip makers have "cracked the code" on the '11's yet; they were having problems getting a chip for that year.

I have heard good things about the Ripp supercharger for the 3.8. If I weren't in California, I think I might consider it; though, I still may do it someday (when my Jeep is out of warranty, AND if Chrysler doesn't release a diesel Wrangler first).

The 4:10 is optional depending on the trim level. The only real way to get more out of the 3.8 is a super charger.

It better be one heck of a build because in stock form it puts out a whopping 125 horses.

I don't care about HP, to be honest. Stock TORQUE of the '80 304 (the worst performance year for that engine) is listed at 220 at 2400 RPM, comparable to the 3.8 at that RPM (assuming the torque testing methods were comparable. The 125hp/220 torque is NET; earlier years it was GROSS).

Earlier years of the 304 had torque at 245 @2500 (I've seen dyno charts showing the torque of the 3.6, not the 3.8, at 250 at that same RPM). I should exceed that torque quite easily with throttle body injection, RV cam, and headers. Consider also that the curb weight of my CJ can approach 1,000 pounds LESS than a JK (many factors affecting the actual difference, of course).

All that, combined with the 6.32:1 first gear of the T18A tranny, and I'd say those 125 ponies will feel pretty snappy!!!

we have a 2010 sport 2 door that has 513s

and we got a 2012 stock unlimited rubicon and our 2010 sport wins in a side by side race, evertime...

is it a huge difference, not at all.

they are still both dogs. if price is a concern then don't waste time on the 12

our 2010 sport costed us 21k and our 2012 rubicon unlmited costed like 34K. (both brand new)

This is true. But if you can find and build a 401 like I did it is better than.................

Sorry can't think of anything.

That's too good to be true or it's the starting bid. Not sure if warranty matters to you but I'm pretty sure the 2009 powertrain warranty doesn't transfer. On 2010 and newer it does. Also, 2011 has the newer interior like the 2012.

I absolutely love my 2010 JKUR but if I did it over again I'd get a 2012.

I was thinking along those lines myself after buying a used 10, but since then and spending some time on these forums, it looks like the 10 is one of the least mentioned within the miles and miles of problem threads.

That's an interesting observation. Since I have, and love, my trouble-free '10 JKUR, I'd really like your observation to be true!

Well, we'd like to think so anyway. At any rate, the last year for things, like engines and transmissions...etc. are usually much better and trouble free than the first year models.

My 2007 just turned 50k miles with zero problems. I am begining to think we 2012 owners are being a little too A.R.

I think the question should be what do you plan on doing with the Jeep. The type of driving and off-roading should determine the difference. My wife and I have a 2011 JKUR (in Sahara Tan, I may add) that is regeared to 5.13's and on 37's. It will walk away from any stock 3.8 as well as the old 4.0's. It comes with a hefty price on gas mileage however, to the tune of about 4-5 mpg lost. I have a 2012 on order as we speak and will be able to tell you soon about the differences between the pentastar and 3.8 as I will also have 37's and 5.13 gearing on the 2012. The 3.8 can now have a ripp supercharger installed, if you replace the ecm, which allows for a 2010 programmer to be used. But some functions, such as cruise control can not be used.
