Cold air intake

I am thinking of installing a colod air intake and cat back exhaust on my 2011 sport to help it breath easier. I have pretty nuch decided on the MBRP "off road" exhaust but can't decide on the intake. Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. Is it actually worth it or am I wasting my money? My jeep is mostly a daily driver with some mild off roading. I am sure this has been covered before but a search of cold air intakes didn't reveal much info! Thank you

It has been pretty much shown the CAI does nothing for the 3.8L engine. The main reason is since it is not drive by wire but computer controlled. When you add more air the computer compensates, only allowing a preset air to fuel mixture. Unless you can find a tuner to modify the computer setting to work with a CAI then it does very little except let more dirt into the intake.

Exhaust sounds better and a Cat Back really does nothing and is a waste. Just get a better muffler and save money. Many still replace this system for the sound. I did.

I just did a search and came up with 616 threads on the subject, not including this one. The air from one of those intakes is no colder than what is coming through your stock intake. Putting one on will cause some noise, some some people think is "kewl" and it will increase your risk of hydro-lock. Other than that it will cost a lot of money with nothing else in return.

aFe did a video on a Jeep they did with their system. I took it with a grain of salt since they were using it as advertising their product but since the result weren't mind boggling it probably was true. They added their throttle body spacer, CAI and Cat back and did a before and after Dyno. They got according to them a 10hp gain from this. But remember that 10hp is on the top number at 5200 rpms. They claimed a better throttle response to but to me that would take a tuner which they may have used. And since the Superchips Flashpaq tuner claims it gives 10hp gains and better throttle response, if they used a tuner then the result show nothing but who knows.

As far as Muffler. My local shop replaced my muffler and needed pipe to get it to fit correctly for $168 parts and labor out the door and it sounds great. If you want a better muffler you will probably find a better deal with a local shop IMO

Sorry, couldn't resist. TommyT- do a google search and you will find hours and hours of reading on the topic, some with scientific fact, some with anecdotal seat of the pants butt dyno stuff. The general consensus is that there are little if any HP gains to be had. Most likely >5 HP. Most people will recognize a better sound to the intake, which I think subconsciously makes us think the engine is now somehow stronger and more robust, in turn causing us to drive with a heavier foot on the skinny pedal. Then there is the group who is sure it increased their MPG by leaps and bounds, then go on to tell you they now only drive 50 mph on the freeway and coast to every stop sign in neutral. It costs about $200-$300 to run the experiment yourself, just educate yourself before you drop the $$$. I think a pair of ACE rock sliders is a better use of that money, myself .

I would not spend $300 for one. A guy local to me sold me his Banks on Craiglist
For $75 so I bought it.

Thoughts--

No torque/acceleration increase
No MPG Increase
Engine is loader
Annoying whistle
It does open help out a bit at around 3000-4000 rpm when merging on the highway.
I still have the stock box for in case I take the jeep off road.
That's about it

It's up to you

I have intake/exhaust and with me adding E3 plugs makes a huge difference. Even with bigger, much heavier, tires it drives considerably better.
How do I know?

My mother has a 2010 JK 2-dr. I have a 2010 JK 2-dr.
I drove both before the mods, identical.
after, Mine drives much easier, throttle response is much improved and just seems more peppy.
This is confirmed by my father who is very familiar with the Red Jeep and drove mine one day, because he did not believe that it would make a difference.
He was "really, very surprised" by the difference. It's almost night and day.

Spend your money as you want, but I suggest the intake/exhaust/plug upgrades and have been eying the RIPP long tube headers.

Also, what kjeeper said above me, I keep the stock box in case I go offroad. This is a must.

Plan was to spend 20 ish and possibly supercharge the 3.8.


Did the CAI thing and we talked bout an exhaust. IMO--not worth the $$

Could regear but I have a 6 speed.

Supercharge it, I don't feel like depleting my hard earned cash. $6000 is a lot of Ching.

Ripp headers :thinking: $2000 is similar to the cost of a regear. Something like 30-40 HP-- I've spent some time looking them up. RIPP aint no joke. Might be the way to go

Yeah plus the sounds!!!

I think the Fm40 sounds awesome, could only imagine being fed through a set of ripped headers. I recommend the FM40 all day long. If you don't want the drone, make sure you put the tail pipe out past the end of the bumper. I removed my tip because it was rusted and it is about 3x louder inside now. I finally understand what everyone is talking about. However I love the way it sounds now.

But its all personal preference.

I have a Banks CAI on my 09 X w auto and 373's. I did not gain much but it is noticeable on better throttle response. Before the intact my Jeep was constantly looking to shift while heading up the mountain (I-8) so I would turn off overdrive. Now it is not looking for the shift and just cruises over. I do turn off the overdrive with a little utility trailer though.

Nevertheless, I bought my intake used knowing I could sell it again if I didn't like it. I do. It is not a huge power gain, but it does help with driveability. After the intact I had a FM60 installed, added a resonator for drone issues, then had the FM removed and replaced with a Magnaflow stainless in the stock place. It too helps in the little ways that matter to me. My post is one of the few with regrets in the "any regrets" thread. Thankfully the Banks and the Magnaflow reduce my regrets of having the JK. They make it more drivable for me and that is all that matters.

I'm in the dame boat.... She wants a ring and buy a nicer house.... And all I want is bumpers, rock sliders, 35's or 7s , new drive shafts , gears, hemi, And all she does is complain cuz all I talk about is jeeps... It's s hard life.... Oh ya and a long arm conversion and fox shocks... Mmmm one day
