First of all, the OEM air flow is as good as it will get. Don't buy an intake thinking you're letting the Jeep breathe. The only thing you will get is a nice noticeable growl/roar.
I wanted to spice up the overly quiet Pentastar, so I bought the Airaid synthamax version that you're considering. Here are the most important points you need to know:
- For the Airaid, the stock airbox's cold-air funnel must be cut and installed onto the airaid. This means that, in the event of warranty work, this install is NOT reversible.
--You can just install the airaid with no air funnel and I doubt it does anything anyways. In that case you won't need to cut the stock airbox.
- For the Airaid, the temp sensor mounting is questionable. I don't like it. Doesn't seem reliable. I've seen worse though: afe's. Still, research the method that the Volant uses and weigh that into the choice.
- The airbox containing the filter makes a BIG difference in sound. An intake with a box is much quieter than an intake without a box. On the plus side, these boxes seem to get rid of some annoying resonance. After experiencing the AFE no-box intake on my wife's JK, I opened the box on my airaid (by unscrewing/removing the fancy metal plate on the top) to make it louder. Big difference in sound, but also introduction of some annoying resonance sounds.
- The amount of parts and steps in the airaid install is ridiculous when compared to what I experienced in an AFE install. It's like airaid just threw a bunch of universal parts in a box and called it a JK intake. They didn't do any production on it at all besides the actual main tube.
I wish I knew about the Volant so I could help you more but, in the end, all of the intakes are pretty similar. Its the temp sensor mounting, box vs. no box, and possible stock intake modifications that are the most important differences.
