Cold Start Engine Noise

I have a 2010 4 door Sahara. I have had her for 3 winters since purchase and have never had any engine noise. I have started noticing a tick this winter on the first start on cold mornings. It only last a few seconds and then stops. And it only happens on the first engine start. Dealer mechanic told me not to worry about and to just use Lucas Oil additive's to try to reduce noise. My Engine has less than 30,000 km so I wouldn't have thought engine noise would be a problem. Anyone else having this issue? Or has anyone else tried the Lucas oils additive products?

Ticks on cold start are kind of common-normal until the oil warms up and flows up 2 the top end. Ifs its going away shortly, I would not worry at all. You can try different oil, synthetic maybe?
What kind of oil filter you using? A cheap oil filter without or non working anti drain back valve will not hold oil on cold starts.

Oh..... Never use oil additives (snake oil)
Oil itself already has additives and adding to them won't make it better.
Scrap the Lucas and get your self some good oil

Thanks for advice. I think I am using Mopar filters as I still get oil changes done at the dealer. So I am not really sure what oil they use.

My dealer told me the noise is common to the 3.8 engine because it is designed to drain oil from the lifters over time and the lifters clatter for a few seconds until the oil replenishes? Can anyone confirm this theory?

It's common for certain dealers to say it's "common" so they don't have to address an issue. Some dealerships aren't that good at diagnosing a problem, they like to remove and replace. The only noise these engines should have is a slight tick from the fuel injectors, which is normal, and from a possible dry start due to a faulty drain back valve on an oil filter, which isn't normal. My 3.8 is quiet other than the injectors.

just to make you feel more at ease, all the 2012+ pentastar engines tick on cold start. mine did it with 6 miles on the clock.

I have two 2012's. No ticks on cold startup. So they don't all do it.

honestly, that's surprising. almost everyone i've talked to has the tick on startup. mine even does it with the new AC head. interesting. are you sure? mine ticks on startup after just 3 hours of sitting. what oil are you using?

I start my JK's in a quiet garage. Mine are silent. I use Valvoline Premium conventional oil. Its MS-6395 approved. I have not needed a new head.

Thats what I am using in mine right now. 5500 and if it sits for 2-3 days it TICKS. It's not my daily driver and I expect it after sitting for a week or so but anything longer than a couple of days and you can hear it. After the initial startup its whisper quiet. Hopefully its not a sign of things to come later on.
