Comfort of Unlimited Rubicon for DD

I'm seriously considering trading in my 2006 Silverado crew cab Z71 for the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I have test driven this vehicle and on the Interstate Highway system, I thought the drive was very smooth. I didn't feel the road in the seats which I found comfortable. I did feel the road in the steering. It didn't seem like it was any more of a rough ride than my Z71 or even my 2011 Dodge Challenger.

My question is this "Has anyone used the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for daily driving or even taking long drives"?

I'm planning a trip from Louisiana to North Carolina toward December and would like to know if the Jeep will kill my back driving it this far.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I'm sure it'll be wonderful as a DD. I frankly am not buying a 4dr...don't need one...but did drive the two door and found it really comfortable. I think the 4dr will be even better with it's longer wheel base.

I DD mine and have taken it on one trip up and down the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
I really have no complaints, nor does my wife. (never a bad thing)
I was also aware of getting into a vehicle with live axles.

Only you know how your back is, I use 2012 JKU Rubicon as dd, no trips yet.
I have 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 also, you cant compare the ride, with longer wheel base, independent front end, it rides better on the freeway than jeep. Why don't you rent a jeep JKU and take it on trip to see how your back does before you buy one.

We were a little concerned about getting a 2-door JK Rubicon as a DD.

While the ride is much stiffer than our other vehicles, it's not harsh or uncomfortable AT ALL. In fact, it's impressively comfortable!

The whole "A Wrangler, that's going to be a rough ride!" thing is a bunch of BS, at least with the JK's.

I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee, and its ride and handling are a significant step up of from any pickup. On long trips, it's what we'll take. However, I would be just fine taking a long ride with the JK too, expecially with the added creature comforts introduced in 2011, and the extra power and smoother tranny in the 2012.

My '12 JKU rubicon is my DD. Just sold my '06 Ram diesel quadcab, which was a DD. I put 148K on my ram, similar in size to your '06 Z71 crew cab.
Ram was fine but offered 19.5K for it - said bye-bye.

Took my JKU about 1600 miles last weekend (Thurs - Sun). Easy drive. Took my '10 JKU sport to Colorado/yellowstone in August (4700 miles 11 days), not bad but the '10 doesn't like mountains as much. '12 is fine.

Easier to city park/navigate the JKU. You are right about feeling the steering in the wheel. Seats in Jeep good, overall ride as a DD fine. Will miss the chipped diesel power from the Ram Cummins though. Headed back to Colorado in a week, this time in a '06 2dr Rubicon. Compared to longer wheelbase of JKU, I expect it to be a bit more harsh.

The Jk is night and day compared to my Tj. smoother and quieter, owning an 07 with the 3.8 does a hell of a lot better on the highway than the Tj did. It's still a jeep though, I could not imagine a long trip with my back. Can't comment on the unlimited but I hear it has better road manners than the 2 door. Passing power manual or auto will be a lot better with the 3.6- gas mileage is still in question with the new(er) engine.
You can't expect a perfect ride in a wrangler but at least--imo--it's the most fun you will have a 4 wheels

I'm not sure about the 2012 model, but my 2008 is fine for DD use. I have about 62,000 miles on it, mostly in Houston city limit driving, occasional freeway around town. My biggest road trips have been about 5 hours without problems.

I DD my 2010 Rubicon and love it. Can't imagine the 2012 being any better or worse. The 2012 looks like it has a nice interior so that has to help. good luck

Yes, I use my JKU Rubicon as a DD. 6-speed transmission and all in DC traffic. No issues so far. Yes, it can get a little twitchy at times, but you get used to it. But that is more a result of offroad tires on pavement. Overall not a big deal. Trust me...a JKUR is just fine as a DD.

I have a very bad back. Broke 3 vertebrae, and they never healed proper. Now I have spurs, wedged spine etc. etc. The funny thing is, that is why I bought the Wrangler Unlimited. I can't sit in cars anymore. I had an Intrepid, and you sit too low in them and it causes extreme pain. I find the Unlimited has a nice upright position, and awesome firm seats. Perfect for a bad back in my case. Perfect height to get in and out of. The first time I test drove one, I knew it was the vehicle for me. I have to drive 2.5 hours one way to go see the back specialists every couple of months, and I love this thing!!!
Mind you mine is a Sport, and not a Rubicon, but it does have the Rubi wheels.lol.
So my vote is. Yes, very comfortable.

i've had mine for 9 months and 11,000 mi. no backaches, kind of suprising i've had many other brands of cars and they always gave me aches on the vegas trips.

DD over 120 miles a day no prob. I am a big guy too. Get a riser pad for center console if you lean on it like i do. MUCH more comfy, i modified mine to conceal an unloaded 380 Ruger TCP and two LOADED clips. Removed plate cut a 1" oak stair tread to match plate, cut out inside to create a square "ring"for gun clips, use black textured bedpaint, dry, screwed to mount, velcroed the pad to wood spacer. Put 1/8" foam tape on metal. No rattles, need gun fast rip off arm rest pad, load, rack slide and showtime!
It takes a strong adendaline filled yank to remove, so no accidentals, and very concealing! I leave CConsole unlocked in case of breakin they will not pull hard on pad.

I have a 2012 JKU Rubicon and it's now DD and it's a pretty comfortable ride on trips. I like to go to Dallas, Houston and New Orleans to catch the football games and so far, it's pretty nice on long trips. It's great to tailgate in as well!!!

HiCap, yes I was thinking of trying to rent one and drive around the local area. Probably drive from Slidell to Baton Rouge, LSU Tigers #1 right now. Sorry got side tracked. It's about a 3 hour round trip so this should give me a good idea.

Thanks,

Mark

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I think I'm going to rent a Wrangler if I can find one to rent and drive it for a couple of days. I would like to own one before Christmas for we're planning a trip to the Raleigh/Durham NC area.

Thanks again.

Mark
