Compass stuck and unable to calibrate

Just got the Wrangler 2011 2D Sahara from the dealer and noticed that the compass is stuck to 'N' and calibration doesn't work. Also, the UConnect, while present, is not working.

The dealer says this is because the radio is the standard one, without GPS. But why would the car radio have the UConnect button, and why would the EVIC show the compass if it's not working? He suggests that I upgrade to the GPS radio, but that's another 2,500 USD!

Is the dealer just bs'ing me or does Jeep really ship out Wranglers that show the options, like UCOnnect button on the radio and the compass on the little EVIC screen, while in fact these are not connected?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Your dealer doesnt know what hes talking about. If you have a compass reading, it should be functioning.
The U connect button is present on all radios, but requires a seperate install of a uconnect microphone and bluetooth reciever (i think).

I would suggest finding another dealer, because yours is dumb.

The standard radio requires the additional Uconnect module.

Here is the procedure to calibrate your compass.

To manually calibrate the
compass:
1. First enter the variance mode. Press and hold the left
button (located on the instrument cluster) for approximately
10 seconds to enter the variance mode, and
release the button when the VAR (Compass Variance)
symbol appears.
2. The current variance value will also be displayed.
Once in the variance mode, it is necessary to release the
button, and then press and hold it again (approximately
10 seconds) until CAL is displayed (solid, not blinking).
3. Manual compass calibration has been initiated. Drive
the vehicle slowly in one or more circles under 5 mph
(8 km/h) in an area free from large metal objects until the
CAL symbol is extinguished.
When the CAL symbol is no longer displayed, the
compass is calibrated and should display correct headings.
Verify proper calibration by checking North (N),
South (S), East (E), andWest (W). If the compass does not
appear accurate, repeat the calibration procedure in another
area.

You definitely do not need to upgrade your radio, just need to get the Uconnect module installed. I had to have it done as well.
Can't speak for compass but it seems like daggo's post is your fix.

Same deal. I installed the Daystar panel above the radio for the extra storage. It has a couple of places for storing items like cell phone, pens etc. Under the panel is where the compass is mounted. The original stock panel has a two screw mount just as the after market Daystar. I noticed that when I put my (Droid) phone in the "tray" which so happens to fit perfectly in that front spot, the compass would be incorrect and would not change readings as I turned. The magnets in the phone speakers or other electronics interfere with the operation of the compass. Sucks because I bought that replacement tray for the extra storage space. Guess if I get directionally challenged I'll just pick up my phone.

Hmmm....I have the 2011 Sahara 4-dr, the compass throws up random directions and I have no "variance" button on my dash that I can see. I just got the vehicle and am new to this group. Any help would be great.

While siting in the driver's seat, hold your left or right arm out in front of you, elbow bent. Make several figure 8's with your hand in counter clockwise movement.
