Confused about break-in procedure in manual...

From the manual:

"A long break-in period is not required for the engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in your vehicle. Drive moderately during the first 500 miles (800 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.
While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in. Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detri- mental and should be avoided. Trailer tow is not recom- mended during break in period.
The engine oil installed in the engine at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving type lubricant. Oil changes should be consistent with anticipated climate conditions under which vehicle operations will occur."


My questions:


What is Jeep's definition of "driving moderately?"


What's the difference between WOT and Full-throttle?


And wont full-throttle acceleration at a high gear downshift to a low gear anyway?


How'd you guys break in your Jeeps? Below 3krpm? Below 55?


I don't want to baby this thing too much, but I don't want to be running it too hard either. I had to hit the freeway with 32 miles on the odo and have tried to avoid the freeways as much as possible.

Moderately would be how you would drive on a daily basis while not grannying it or trying to race anyone. I'd say revving to about 3000-3500max?

Full throttle is the same as wide open throttle

I believe they meant full throttle in low gears as in 1 and 2. The manual is written for wranglers in general but yes you are right high gear full throttle will most likely downshift but usually only to 3rd from 5th

I bought mine used so I didn't break it in. Personally I wouldn't be worried about some freeway. The only thing I wouldn't do is hammer it or tow. I'd break it in first before those

I just drove my Jeep like I have a little sense! No rapid accelerations and don't go flooring the skinny pedal and you'll be fine.

I always take it easy for the first 100 miles or so on a new engine, and then drive it like I plan to drive it every day.

It's never failed me yet.

Since mine is still under 500 miles, I find "my" moderate is in the 1,500-2,500 rpm range, and the Eco symbol is mostly present in the speedo cluster. Although I'll accelerate appropriately as traffic dictates. So far so good.

it means this:

**Engineer - After 60 miles, feel free to peg the throttle and wring that sucker out to redline. It helps break-in.

**Lawyer - By the way, you may lose control of your vehicle. If you're in low gears, you may perform a burnout and drift into a school bus.

so DO full throttle acceleration, but don't blame us if you crash. If you have an auto, lock it in 3rd and run it up to redline every so often.

A bit subjective ehh. Chrysler clearly has some real geniuses writing this stuff.

These things are super tight when new. I took it really easy for the 1st 100 or so miles, drove like grandma until about 500 miles, around 1000 miles I began to open it up a bit. They don't indicate if they use break in oil in the initial fill. Because they don't recommend an early 1st change I'm guessing not.

Had this in another thread and figured I would bring it here for others to see, thank you in advance

Question for you all... I am over my initial 60 miles (about 100 mi) and was doing 3rd full throttle (Yes, I keep track lol) and when I shifted and let the clutch out like I normally do, the Jeep thumped, it felt like dumping the clutch and sent me into my seat. I did not smell burning clutch.

I was concerned I broke something and continued to drive it moderately for about 5 miles around town. To my surprise, this morning on my way to work, the clutch feels better than it did yesterday?

I normally drive very conservatively and after the 300 mile mark only run the Jeep hard once a gas tank or so. Anyone know how much these Jeeps can take?

sounds like you just didn't get the rev match right and sent a shock to the drive train when you pulled out the clutch. nothing to worry about.

Hulk, I broke in my 2012 last year. I would not worry about that at all. My guess would be something along the lines of you surged the gas, or slipped the clutch a bit. at 300 miles, your still mating the clutch most likely. Expect to see a milage bump at around 5000 miles, and again at 12000 I think. Nothing huge, but a bit more. at least I did.

As for what they can take... I don't know what you mean really. I drove my 2012 12500 miles in less than 6 months and it was brilliant. I didn't take it off road really, dirt roads dont count to me... maybe a class 6 road here or there. I drove it long distances though. I did not baby it at any point, and I did have it loaded with tools or camping gear many times.

These Jeeps are very capable and in their stock form, I found it very reliable. I have not lifted or done any after market things to the powertrain of it...

The 2012 is gone now, and my 10A should be in next week... Why did I sell it... I wanted a Rubicon... then I saw the 10A and was like OMG MUST HAVE!

One thing I have not see in this thread is don't keep your rpm's at a constant try to accelerate then let off. Accel. Let off. Ect.(varying rpm) For the first 500 Or so. This will keep the rings from glazing the cylinder walls. Also when you go high in the rpm range let off and leave it in gear.(engine braking) The vacuum will also help the rings seat. What I usually do is. Drive it like you stole it for about 50 miles. High rpm's and lots of engine braking. After that I change oil. And do the varying rpm thing I mentioned above for about 500 mi. This is mostly important on the interstate where you may be at a constant rpm for a long time. Change the oil again and she should be good to go. Granted, I have never done this to a "brand new" engine but it has yet to fail me. GL.
