Considering a JKU

Went and took a look at them today at a local dealership. Test drove a 14 JKU rubicon.... Much better ride than I imagined and much more room than I assumed.

Any regrets going with a JKU? I'm coming from a 2013 Dart which is just too small for me but has been a hell of an economy car when it runs....

I've had my JKU for about a week now and I'm really happy with my decision. I was mostly looking at F-150s but decided I'd stop by the local Jeep dealer to check the JKUs out and, well, we can see how that ended. I feel the Unlimited has enough space and towing capacity for anything I'd need.

I came from an Audi A4 so i know what you mean by "when it runs" lol.

No regrets. I am on my second JKU. My first was a 2010 Rubicon 6 speed manual. My new one is the auto 5 speed with leather. I love these Jeeps. Prior to the JKU I have owned a Cherokee and two other Wranglers. Don't expect to get great gas mileage but do expect to have a vehicle that is more of a life experience than just a ride. I am a Jeep guy....

Getting bad gas milage is way better than driving a soulless appliance.

I drive about 60 miles a day for work. Most of it is tollway so it's never too bad, but when the snow hits in Chicago they might as well drop all speed limits to 35 mph...

I really had 2 requirements by the wife:
4 doors
Automatic

I really was sold on anything else jeep except for the Grand Cherokee SRT8...

When I bought my JKU I had intentions of getting a JK but a demo drive was all it took. Great ride and plenty of room. Haven't regretted it at all.

A JKU is not a completely practical vehicle, but it is as practical as a vehicle gets while still being completely awesome. Do it.

That is a very good way to put it.

All I can say is "do your research!"

I'm super happy with my Wrangler, but they are not for everyone. Also, they are not like buying a car, you will want to pick the model and options that best fit how YOU will use the vehicle.

Well said!

You may also want to consider renting one for a week to see if you can live with it. Don't get me wrong, they are outstanding, but coming from a Dart we're talking 2 totally different worlds. Or if a friend has one, maybe borrow it for a couple days. Tough to get a real idea for the Jeep on a test drive, want to make sure it's livable

I'm thinking that the sport would be sufficient as it would end up a high mile highway machine with light off road duty when visiting the inlaws.

I've had a strange vehicle progression.
Started off in a Chevy one ton van in high school that was replaced with an econo shitbox (mercury tracer wagon) and the had an s10 blazer.... The blazer was quite fun although I didn't of much too it... The had a GTO and finally the dart... I miss the power of the GTO but the accessibly of the blazer and van...

To be honest the dart is only acceptable due to creature comforts like the touch screen, nav, heated seat and wheel, remote start, rear camera, etc.... The power is horrible and in town mileage SUFFERS... I could get about 35 running 68-69 on the interstate but it drops to about 20 when going around town.... If the jeep can get 15+ it will be just fine and acceptable...

I found a new 2013 Wrangler Mojave Edition Unlimited at a local Canadian dealer probably one of the last ones built end of 2012.
Picking it up end of next week. Basically a dune color Sahara with lizard badges however on this one the embroidered Geckos are missing from the seat upholstery and I wonder why.
I owned a CJ8 and a Cheorkee both built up.

Are you sure it is a Mojave? I know models are different in Canada vs the US, but in the states, the Mojave's were only made in 2011.

OP, is space is your concern with the Dart and you want the most practical DD, the 4 Dr is hands down your best choice. If you are just looking for the Jeep experience either one will get the job done.

That looks like a dealer special as opposed to an actual Mojave. I see the "Worx" sticker and rims on it. Plus it is a Sahara....

Jeep trivia time. Even with the painted fenders, painted top, and leather seats....Mojave's were actually based on Sports. They are one of the few vehicles with leather that does not have heated seats.

It is still pretty bad-ass.....

Research and KNOW what you're getting.

Jeeps look nice and perform amazingly off road. BUT

Don't expect a smooth ride.
The top might leak.
Road noise louder then most other stock cars/SUVs/Trucks.
Wind noise prevalent around 50-60mph and above with the hard top.
Gas Mileage sucks.
Interior space lacks in comparison to similar sized vehicles.

If you can accept those then welcome to the family!

It's gotta be 4 doors to get the wife's approval

The test drive was smoother than expected. I told the salesman I expected a janky ride similar to a best to shit pick up.

Road noise is not a big deal to myself
Gas mileage is my only concern, but if it can squeeze 17-20 on the highway I'm golden.

And I challenge you to test drive a dart... We have a jeep stroller and it barely fits in our trunk, the back of the jeep looks like an entire minivan compared to the dart...

Panthermark,
Thanks for the help, you were right a Sahara dressed up as a Mojave. They applied the graphics to an unsold new 2013 and added 5 wheels and a 3 inch lift.
Just ordered bumper and winch to complete the package.

Looking through the trims looks like the Sahara is the better buy? Wife is dead set against the rubicon as it will be 95% DD and highway miles...

Just made the switch myself from JK to JKU. Decided on a 23S package and doing what mods I want myself after the fact.

DD for me too.

That looks like Dune. All mojave's that I have seen are Sahara tan. Love that color, although I would have still picked the anvil over all.

Happy wife, happy life. For me it was sport or rubicon. Never glanced at the Sahara. I am a bit inclined to customize my vehicle, so I don't mind picking and choosing the options that I want. In fact I wanted a sport to start with a blank slate. I have added premium top and purchased Sahara fender flares that I will color match for that reason. I couldn't get those options directly from Jeep at the price point I wanted to be at.

It's a matter of personal preference when choosing between trims. In the end, it's all awesome.

This is the beauty of the Wrangler. Make it any way you want it, it's yours..be happy with what you pick - at the end of the day that's all that matters.

Best of luck, and make sure to let everyone know what you get!

I got the Sahara and I'm happy. It has power options that I didn't have on my trucks which I appreciate. My mods will probably be limited to wheel and tire upgrades as well as the audio. I don't spend OUR money on mods so I have to pick my goodies as I can afford them.

Pick the one that fits you the best. Now whatever you say to yourself you will end up customizing it as it is bad habit

Yeap, dune is the colour on the invoice.

I LOVE my Sahara....and if I were buying again, I would probably get the same model. BUT...from a "value" standpoint, in the 4 doors, both the Sport S and Rubi are better values for your money. I went back and forth between a Sport S and a Sahara....but becaue I wanted heated saddle leather and a painted top (on certain colors)...the decision was made for me.
If I were buying a JKU and I was getting black cloth interior and a black hard top...I don't think I would spring for a Sahara unless you really wanted the wheels, shocks, painted fenders, 115V outlet, auto headlights, hood insulation, and goofy (IMO) bumper cover.

Yeah, the color gave it away as well. Dune started in 2013.
Mojave's were only available in 2011....and Sahara Tan was only available in 2011 and really early 2012. Plus Mojave's only came in Sahara Tan, White, and Black.

I think at this point the only option I would like is the nav. I have a couple feelers to dealerships for low optioned sports and rubicons.

a JKU is a excellent vehicle. coming from a lancer evolution, powerwise was obvisously different, but the the JKU is very spacious IMO and its a fun vehicle.

im sure you'll enjoy it.
