conundrum

im a parts changer and never learned the black art of specs, so that being said heres the question. 07 wrangler unlimited with stock 255/70/18s, part A: what is the biggest tire i can fit with stock wheels and suspension? part B: what gear change would i have to make to get said tire as close to factory gas mileage?...i can see the reactions now...." you want what" any help is apriciated even if it suggests going above factory suspension with a lift to get a bigger tire...as long as the mileage issue is adressed im greatful

You will not keep the same MPG, period. Changing the gears will make it worse.

Daggo is right on the MPG. Bigger tires will use more gas.

The tire size question gets asked ALL THE TIME. I ran some searches for you that brought up some helpful threads. Take a look at these threads and these threads and these threads. You'll find all the info you need there.

Depending on how big you go and what your factory gearing is, you may not need to regear. With an 07, you could have 3.21, 3.73, or 4.10 gears.

I was looking as some Kelly 265/75/18 traction tires, which were the largest I could find without a lift, etc. They still were just under 33" and my 3.73 would "probably" give very similar mpg.

And for now, the stock tires are serving my needs very well so I'm leaving them alone.

I ran 265/70-18 for a while on my Sahara and then jumped to a 16" wheel with 4.5" backspacing and now run 285/75-16 tires. The money I saved on the rubber (33" on 16" wheels vs 33" on 18" wheels) paid for the wheels.
The proper backspacing allows the wider tire.

I do have a 2.5" lift though. You don't need that much but it helps.

thanks for the info its all been helpful....now let me pose another question. what would you fine folks suggest to get that rugged/ aggressive jeep look most owners want but make for a functional daily driver that makes a roughly 50 mile round trip to work.... this has been harder for me to figure out on my own than i thought...looks are easy but remaining functional poses a problem.

Thank you. They were a pain for a whole week, all because a fuse in each pair didn't blow where it was supposed to.
