Cracked exhaust manifold

Anyone else having issues with cracked exhaust manifolds on the JKs? I just rolled 70k miles on mine and it started developing a ticking when cold that sounded like an exhaust leak. Turns out it was.

I have an extended warranty that covers both manifolds but was wondering if this is a common issue.

Have you Splashed thru any water lately ? That water on a Hot Cast Iron manifold will crack em real quick.
Lots of times Cracks in Manifolds are usually Stress related, stress in the Casting.

Sound like a good excuse for headers.

Seen it, don't know if it's common.

Good luck

It's very common, I just replaced mine on the drivers side. Very easy to change took about 1.5 hrs in my driveway.

Did you replace the gasket between the head and manifold and the gasket between the manifold and cat too or were you able to re-use both?

I have read it is very common. It was something I found out about after I bought my JK and was doing searches to find out issues and problems. This is something I should have done before I bought the vehicle but I have not developed oil use, manifold cracking, or the hot oil message for the transmission. I have, however, had the broken transfer case clip (under the console), hood lift issues (not fixed with spring removal but now cured with Drake pins), and poor fuel economy. All in all, my JK is a good vehicle that has a high cost associated with it for fuel, but is very cheap to insure so that actual cash flow of monthly ownership is lower or very close to other vehicles that get much better fuel economy.

Extended warranty picked up all but 50.00 of this repair. I'll keep an eye on the new manifold and see how long this one lasts. I might end up pulling the heat shield off the passenger side and see if that manifold looks good too.

Really like my Wrangler but I'm pretty sure my warranty company doesn't. They're 1200.00 in the hole now over what I paid for the warranty and I still have 4.5 years left and 50,000 miles to go
