Craigslist Soft Top experiences

Hi All,

Just picked up my first Jeep Wrangler last night (2008)!

It is a hardtop so with summer approaching I was looking to get a soft top. I found one on craigslist for $300. The owner said it is in great shape and that he has all the available hardware. He said it was the stock soft top off of his 2008 model and is a sunrider.

My question is, have people generally had good experiences getting a soft top off of craigslist? It seems to me like there is a lot of room for missing hardware or holes in the fabric. Is that a good enough deal on a 3-yr old sunrider to jump on before it is too late?

Related, do most people like the sunriders? How long does it usually take to unfold the entire top back (not just the sunrider portion)?

Thanks for any help!

Ask for pictures of EVERY INCH OF IT. I wouldn't recommend ordering from Craig's list. I'd rather get one from a catolog but it's your call.

I just got a complete 4dr MOPAR soft top off of craigslist for 400.00 with factory tint. Great deal and the guy was upfront and honest...

Craigslist OK..........

Craigslist is OK, if you know what you are looking for. Got my hardtop at a great price. Hardtop wiring (different seller) kit $40.00,list $130. Spare soft top $400. Only missing the door surround screws. Your best bet would go with somebody who has a soft top and knows all the pieces. Overall it would be the top (cloth,windows,support/bows) , door surrounds & screws, back talgate bar & two plastic brackets that attach the bar to the body & the backets that bolt on to the roll bar that the supports pivot on. Anyone else thing of anything I missed?

I would only buy one off of craigslist if it is new and a take off from the dual top option. When I was looking for my soft top, I drove and looked at 4 or 5 used soft tops and every one had something missing or something was warn out.
I would recommend buying new because you know everything is there (the top rolled up attached to the bows, and the two boxes containing the 3 windows and door surrounds.
Like ALs said... if you know what your looking for, you can find a great deal on CL. Do some research and learn all of the major parts that are included in the soft top so you know what to look for.

I got a new soft top off Craigslist about 4 months ago.....it came with a 2008 Sahara though.....

In this case, the Jeep/top were exactly as good as or better than the photos/seller told me.

I've heard of lots of unpleasant stories from CL....but lots of good ones too.

Keep your eyes open and know exactly what you are looking for regarding parts etc.

Thanks for all the help.

One thing that gave me pause is that when I asked for pictures he just said he wish he took some before removing it.

What do people think of some of the other tops out there? (I know, newb question, asked a million times already I am sure)

Where I park currently I wouldn't want to leave the top off over night even if I knew it would be fair weather, so likely I would want to be putting it back up every night , so the ease of accomplishing that would be important.

Do research, be smart, and don't buy it if you cannot look at it. Its all about common sense. Here in the Seattle area, there are lots of new take offs still in boxes. My wife lifts and lowers hers on the 4 door by herself all the time when its on. She has the routine down and its easy for her now.

I just had 2 callers on something I was selling on CL and they both were scammers. BE CAREFULL. One wanted to buy sight unseen and for me to cash their overnight check and give the remainder to the courier guy. It was like a lot of cash to the courier and 125.00 to me for my item.

i would only fork over money for a soft top via craigslist once it was installed on my jeep. Drive out there, have him help you install it. That's the only way you will know you have all the pieces and what kind of shape it is in. You will be ok in "dual top" mode until you get back home.

My 2010 sahara only came with a hardtop. I purchased a soft-top on craigslist from a 2008. The guy had only used it one summer, took it off and kept it in his garage. He had all the pieces and tinted soft windows. He wanted $500, I offered $400 and the deal was done. Couldn't be happier. Just one or two spots from where he parked under a tree and some sap must have dripped on it. I feel that I can tell alot about the product on craigslist just from the first 2 minutes of speaking with the seller when I pick it up. If they are forethcomming about the item and honest about any damage, chances are you will be fine. Just know what you are buying, how much it costs new. Determine if you are happy with the quality/tradeoff between the price new, and your price. Maybe I have just had good experiences with CL, but my $.02.

I would check on eBay 1st there is someone selling a 2011 brand new OEM softtop 4-door onn there. Craiglist is cool if you wanna get stuff for cheap, eBay at least as some kind of seller protection. Also from experience they will provide more photos if asked.

Here's the item number. 330547344752 hope this helps
