Custom Subwoofer Installs

Hey guys. I have decided I need some more boom from my speakers. I didn't get the alpine system when I bought my jeep, and I kind of regret it now.
Now I'm wanting to build by own sub enclosure to go in the back of the jeep. I don't want to take up any of my store space because I use it pretty frequently. I found a few pictures online of things that would work but the ones you can buy are just way to expensive. So I decided to build my own. I am even considering a building a fiberglass box that attaches to the roll bars in the back and comes down at an angle from both corners near the rear glass. Does anyone know if this has been done before? Or if there is anything making it unlikely I haven't thought of.

Here are a few pictures I found online of other boxes that save the storage space. I'd like to see what others have done and hear ideas.

I know it's expensive but the JL Stealthbox is great!! Bolts through the wheel well so there's no way anyone is walking off with it. Sounds amazing. I have it hooked up to a JL 900/5 and the soundbar and fronts have JL C3's. I'll admit it's not quite enough on the highway but top and doors on its amazing. I like quality. That's there without doubt. Volume is there as well but it's just lacking a little when topless. Prob need to just mess with the eq to get the mix right.

Take it from someone who went with the factory upgrade - I ripped the whole thing out after going Polk, kicker, kicker amps, wiring crap up left and right. Threw away a grand I could have put into what I have now. Do it once and do it right!!

If storage space is concerned, have you considered wakeboard subwoofers that mount to the boom tower. The same clamp setup can be mounted to the roll bar.

Cruchfield has some. I'm sure more places do as well but I just started searching.

Mattk11 over in the electronics forum made custom fiberglass under front seat up firing subs. It looks awesome and he claims it's the best setup he's heard for top off. He tried a few placements before settling on that.

Subwoofer Placement

I'm going to see if I can affordably replicate this when I get around to subs.

Ive been battling with this myself actually. Were doing a custom fiberglass enclosure right above the wheel well between the back seat and the rollbar. height will be no higher than the rear seat and a cut out for the fold down latch. I am driving my audio guy nuts but there will be a matching one on the opposite side with an area for straps and recovery gear.

Should look as stock as you can possibly get, considering!

That is brilliant - I never have seen anything like that before. I've been searching but can't find any mountable subs... just the other speakers. Any specific make/models/links?

Haha, I still have your setup saved in my pics. Unfortunately with my Sundown SA 8 V2 and a ported box I need a lot more room. I've given up and just building a square ported box that extends to the 40/60 split on the Drivers side.

Have you seen this done? How do they sound compared to a set of subs?

Here's my set up before I added the grille guards.

I found this box on eBay and had an amp installed to the factory head unit.

On a side note the old sub location is great for storing a tow strap. I think I saw that on here somewhere.

I haven't seen done but I thought it was a great idea. Unfortunately after a fair amount of searching all I'm finding is full range speaker sets not dedicated subs.

I have a JL stealthbox myself and I love it. I have it powered by a JL HD900/5 with C5's in the front and C3s in the sound bar. It costed me a decent amount of money but the system bumps.
As for mounting a subwoofer on the rollbars I personally wouldnt say its the safest thing and would leave it mounted on the floor. You have to take into consideration hoe heavy some of these subs are and how much they vibrate around. Good luck with a system.

I just ordered the NON sub panel to "delete" my sub.

Looking at starting in a few weeks on the sub enclosure!

Yeah I need to look into the structure of the box a LOT if I'm going to have it hang from the roll bars.
I really like the stealth box but I can't get myself to spend a grand for the speaker and box then have to buy an amp to power it. I have a set of 12" subs I would like to use if they'll work. I think I could build a similar box or try for something really unique.

I would highly recommend this solution for less than 170 bucks. The Rockford Fosgate Punch 10 inch sub with an internal 300 watt amp. I have the Alpine system and I can run both subs together. The best thing is, It has quick disconnects to remove it quickly, and is more bass than I need. I usually have it turned down to about 25%.

I might need pick one of those up.... did you see if it would fit under the seats in the rear? The specs right it's only 8" thick/deep? For $10 more you can get the 12" one, but it looks to be 11" deep.

I will take a side view picture. It is a little too deep to fit under the back seat.

Subwoofers in wakeboard boats are mounted in the footwell by the driver. I've never seen or heard of tower mounted subs, just 6.5" & 8" marine speakers
