Custom Subwoofer Options?

This is my first post here and of course I want to give a quick hello but I am at a crossroads. I just installed a new in-dash double din navigation/stereo, new speakers, amp...etc. I am looking for some low's as well since the components and 6.5's will not supply me with the bass I like to FEEL when I listen to music. Has anyone here done a custom box off to the back passenger side of the trunk and knows approximate cost and what subwoofer choice. I am worried about the depth of the cone/magnet so that way I can still get into the storage underneath in the back where I keep some random tools.

Please advise.

You could buy the factory sub enclosure which sits in that very location, but it's only designed to take an 8" sub. Fact is that subs work best in bigger boxes, so if you want a lot of bass you're going to have to sacrifice some storage area.

I have seen a very neat looking install on one of the WF members' Jeep that had the amp and sub installed on the inside of the tailgate, but I realise that that could create logistical issues for some people.

The factory build is crap unfortunately. I was hoping for something custom due to that. My friend has it and it is coming apart at the seams.

I thought about mounting to the tailgate as well. The wires would be a risk in that location. I looked on Google and found a custom box that mounts UNDER the rear seat. I only have a 2 door and bought it keeping in mind it was purely for recreation and not be used to move my child into her college dorm...ya dig?

I am thinking of going with this considering all options but this might be nice under the driver's seat where I would want to feel the bass anyway.

Remove rear seat and build a wall w 4 18" subs. All the bass u want to feel.

At 150W RMS it isn't the most powerful sub on the market, but you'd certainly feel it.

Location for a sub isn't hugely important, I think; low frequency sounds travel far better and are far less directional than high frequencies. I have a big issue with mounting expensive audio hardware under the seats in a soft top vehicle, it's one of the first places an opportunist thief would look. Also, I don't know about how the JK works but in my JKU, the seat squabs on the rear seat move down and fill the space beneath them when the seat is folder forwards.

I like Twitch's set up, a pair of 8s will give you a lot of welly while the location is unobtrusive and doesn't take up space that would otherwise be used by something else. I'd make sure that sub control is easily accessible though (i.e. not on an amp buried inside the dashboard), you could give your passengers a serious headache. Also, I'm presuming that those are custom boxes so while they look good, there's an amount of work likely to be involved. Definitely one of the best solutions I've seen yet though.

Fiberglass molded bottom and 1/2 mdf for the sides and top. Bass knob is up front. 1 way screws for security. (I dont have a top) i have them on a 1500 watt amp and usually run it at half and its gained way down

My local car stereo place ("The car stereo company" in Mountian View California) tells me that they can make a custom form fitted ported subwoofer enclosure out of fiberglass that will fit inside the factory subwoofer enclosure.

I believe they are planning it as a one-off, not as an item they would sell normally.

It's time and money though and I need (want) off road lights first.

Why bother? You might as well just line the factory enclosure with Dynamat. The material of which it is made is less important than the volume of the box.

The factory sub-tub (plastic) is useless. I had a JL W3 8" in there and it rattled. I ended up reusing the sub in a custom box that the sound place had. Just by chance the box there was built for a W3. I yanked the factory sub-tub and replaced with a new factory plastic flat panel. I then put the box/sub on that side. I made it easily removable so I could remove if needed.

This is only MY OPINION but if people want some bad ass audio in their vehicle shouldn't they be purchasing something else other than a rattling, windy, flappy, loud-tire, jeep?

I LOVE sound and that's why I've faced the facts and accepted that the sound in my JKUR will never sound as nice as say a decent set up in a closed cabin vehicle such as a large SUV or luxury sedan.

So I will never buy nicer speakers unless my stock ones blow out. At highway speed with the doors and top off you can't tell if you have the stock speakers or some high end AKGs from their premium line.

I do have a question though... That stock sub in the back... If I get caught in the rain with the top off, what's keeping it from getting completely ruined? What's keeping you guys' nicer setups from getting ruined in case of a downpour as well?

I can hear my system clear as day with the hard top, soft top, no top, highway speed, etc. That is why I did my complete install. I wanted to hear my music. I agree in that I did not go overboard with sound proofing like I did on my Ford Escape (previous vehicle). No need really. I did sound deaden portions of the rear for rattling purposes.

For the sub-tub and speakers in general they are somewhat protected. Fronts are in the tomstones and under the dash, soundbar speakers are at least upside down and protected and the sub tub top is pretty flat and the sub is recessed. Most water would run off it. Also most wiring is protected and tucked away under plastic covers.

Will it sound as good as a properly deadened, hard top SUV? No. Can it be improved massively from the stock garbage? You bet.

As for the rain issue, marine-rated speakers.

Polypropylene cones are all water proof and guts are protected in the box. Amps are raised. As for a downpour...if you go over 50 your air bubble stays dry.

My JKUR isn't rattly, flappy, or loud-tired (and I run 35s). It's about quality sound for me. The stockers were huge POS. I upgraded and can clearly hear my tunes no matter the Jeep's configuration. I now lack only upgrading the sub and I'll be set. I want to go the route of Lynskey and replace my stock enclosure with OEM non-sub panels and add a sub in the same location.

Just a heads up,

I talked to a Kicker rep from Canada today and he said that the Kicker CompRT 8" would be released at the end of this month.

I am planning on buying it and swapping it with the stock sub to see how it performs with the stock amp.

Crap. I haven't heard it, but I can guarantee you that it will be crap. The amp is crap, therefore the performance of anything connected to it will be.

Your stock amp puts out 368W RMS, not peak. That's around 60W per channel peak, so let's be generous and assume 30W RMS. The DVC sub takes two of those channels from the amp, so let's give it 60W RMS. The sub is rated at 400W RMS. It's barely going to get moving.

If you're going to spend money on speakers, then you need to give them the proper juice and amplify them properly. IMHO, obviously.

I am also in a position where i plan to update the entire sound system. I have a 2 door JK with the alpine system, and it's garbage. I would love to see pictures of peoples set up, especially the sub. My goal is to get an update sub that doesn't take up that much space in the trunk. I want to get rid of that garbage 8" sub in the back. Thanks!

If you bridge 2 channels and parallel the coils onthe sub i guarantee youll get more power. Its cheaper to buy a monoblock sub amp and run low pull 6.5s on the factory amp though.

Agreed that the stock amp will not power aftermarket subs very well. You got to go aftermarket if you want great sound.

I bought a sound ordinance powered sub and mounted it to the rear gate. It's not a boomer but it does the trick.

If I am planning on keeping the mygig 730n head unit and maintaining the "stock" (I have the dodge nitro version) infinity amp I have a couple of questions:

I want to upgrade my sub to the kicker CompRT82 powered by the kicker KX400 mono amp. If I do this can I run this amp along side the stock amp only to power the sub?

Now, with the stock amp remaining for the speakers what RMS power handling should I be looking for? In the 60-70 range? I know I want 2ohm speakers.

Oh and if I want to upgrade the in dash tweeters, what route should I go?

A hi/lo converter is all youd need to run the sub and sub amp on the stock unit. A bass knob of course. Believe it or not. 70w is quite loud so thats about good

I'm not sure if the factory unit has a separate pre-out for the subwoofer, I think that might all be handled by the amp. Honestly, the stock systems seem to be specifically designed to prevent component upgrades.

I am putting something temp in there for now and going to upgrade with a custom set-up later. Probably good enough with this for the summer.

My plan is to get 2 10" Pioneer subwoofers in the back and run them off my existing amp. Will post photos after the weekend. I pick it up tomorrow. I did stop by the shop where my friend is doing the install and it sounds AMAZING. It is everything I hoped for and more and it will only get better in a few short months.
