Dealer discount question...

I realize that I should not get my hopes up here, but I just noticed something regarding my Jeep that's supposed to arrive at the dealership tomorrow.

I put in my order on 9/20. For the last week or so, it came up in the dealership's inventory list as "in transit". It had an "Asking Price" of $28,895 (which is the MSRP).

The price I agreed to was $27,335 with other fees (except tax) waived, using the Tread Lightly discount.

So this morning I go back to the dealership's website and bring up my Jeep:

2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport For Sale | Orlando FL

Now it shows an Asking Price of $27,282.

When viewed in list form:

Orlando New 2010 & 2011 Chrysler Jeep Dodge | Ram, Town & Country, Wrangler, Liberty, or Caliber | Greenway Chrysler Jeep Dodge

The price says MSRP with a "Discount" amounting to $1613 for an "Adjusted Price" of $27,282.

Now, here's my question(s):

First, is this a real dealer discount? According to the literature that came with the Tread Lightly discount, it is stated that the discount is in addition to any dealer discounts or incentives.

Second, if applicable based on the first answer, do I have any room to further negotiate even though the price of the vehicle was agreed upon prior to placing the order? I don't really have the power to walk, since they wanted a deposit check before I put the order in.

The way I see it, there's probably no chance for me to get anything extra at this point. Thoughts?

Print the ad, take it in and ask for that price minus the tread lightly discount. Go to your states AG website and check the laws, if I am correct, they have to sell you the Wrangler for the same price. Truth in advertising.

I know here in IL you cannot sell a vehicle for more than it is advertised for. And you can not have 2 different prices advertised in different papers or websites.

No problem, glad to help. And FYI-Fields will have a CJD dealership in Sanford in about a year. The new building is getting ready to be built and should be running by next year this time. Hoping to be there myself. Would love the warm weather. Might pm you on a couple of things when I know more.

The tread lightly discount is based on invoice. It's not an amount that you get off some other price. Invoice minus 1%. Simply buy it for whichever price is lower.

My understanding is that it is a "dynamic" discount, the amount of which is determined by what is required to bring a price down to 1% under invoice -- which is why the literature states that it is in addition to dealer offers and incentives, or however it's worded.

I don't know, obviously I'll look at it again before I go in tomorrow.

Wondering if some of the discounts showing, are all for Wranglers that were special ordered for customers (such as yours) and that those discounts are the discounts that those customers already got when they ordered their Jeeps.

Like, in your case.. why would they even be showing YOUR Jeep, since it's not like they would be able to sell it to anyone else.

So, it may just be an advertising sales tool that they use to help lure customers.

I was thinking that this may be the case. The alternative would be that they just don't query the database with a filter that pulls out the ordered ones.

The percentage that the "discount" represents is different for every one, so that may be the case.

2 things,

Daggo is technically right. However, the dealer can still apply the tread lightly discount to your deal. They choose to price and advertise their inventory a little below invoice. It works out for you and them. You get an additional discount and since the dealer gets 2% back on the tread lightly discount, they break out a little ahead of their advertised price. So the disount can be used, but the TL is based on invoice.

check your state laws, but in IL you do not own the car until you complete all paperwork and drive the Wrangler off the lot. So you can by all rights bring up the advertised price and ask for that price and the 1% thru TL.

All new cars are shown on websites. Ordered cars, until they are delivered are seen as available for sale. Reason being, dealers like to order cars that are hard to get and put ficticious names on them speed up the build time and to have more available inventory. Also you might order a vehicle now and then change your mind and back out before it gets to the dealer. Plus it never hurts to show you have "X" new wranglers coming in or already on the grounds.

Just be ready for them to say something along the lines of, oh that's the price if you qualify for other rebates like military, etc.

Again in IL we can not advertise a price that not all customers qualify for.

also make them check to see if you are on any TDMs, targeted direct mailers. They can do that thru dealerconnect. you can PM me your zip code and last name and I can check for you too. The TDMs come to your house in the form of a postcard or as a letter. Inside might be a little card with a control number for an additional $500 or it could be at the bottom of the post card.
