Dealer Haggling 101- Help a first time buyer

Hey guys,

Currently I own a 2002 Wrangler Sport 5 speed. Absolutely love it.
The itch to buy a new jeep has been getting stronger and with Dune out now, I have a few good colors to pick from.

Here is what I am looking for:

2013 Wrangler Sport
6 Speed
DME 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio MX5 Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top RSC SIRIUS Satellite Radio HAA Air Conditioning

I have the Chrysler Affiliate code for the 1% under invoice, and this was the first real offer I got back from a not so local dealership:

"Your price on a wrangler built the way you want is $24,149 and your OTD is $24,861"

Am I using the 2013 Pricing spreadsheet wrong? I got 23,717 as the 1% invoice pricing for my configuration.

Any insight is appreciated!

Give the VIN for the Jeep you are interested in to your bank. The bank can then provide you with the invoice price. Then tell the salesperson you want the 1% under invoice.
Most, maybe all states also allow dealers to charge an extra fee on top of the negotiated price. For example, here in the Denver area, dealers charge an extra $475-$490 as a dealer handling fee. The salesperson may be doing something similar.

Where did you get this pricing spreadsheet from? You can go to someplace such as cars.com and build your Sport with the exact options you want and it shows you what the invoice price is compared to the MSRP as you go.

Here in the St. Louis area dealers cannot add more than $75 for a doc fee if someone is using the Affiliate Rewards program.

Remember, if your dealer represents that they accept the Chrysler Affiliate Rewards Program, Chrysler guarantees your deal. If a dealer tries to cheat on the price, Chrysler will force them to make it right. If you question the deal, call the Affiliate Rewards "Hot Line" at (888) 444-4321. They are very helpful!

For a 2013 Wrangler Sport, I was offered 2.8% under invoice (This would have been purchased 12/12 - assuming time of month/year makes a difference when purchasing).

For my 2013 Rubicon, I was offered 4.3% under invoice. (and a 2013 Sahara 3.8% under invoice)

Shop around... go to other dealers and see who will give you the best deal. If you are trading in, try to get the best trade in value. Take that offer to the next dealer and they'll beat it. Get them competing for your business. Dealers will cut each other's throat for the sale.

Edmunds.com is a good place to start. They give msrp, invoice, and also what they call "true market value." Also, they have all options listed so you can build one out as you'd like and see prices.

Jason P, I don't know what your tax rate is, but in Arizona where I purchased mine it is 9.3%. So here if you can purchase a Wrangler for MSRP, OTD, then that is a pretty good deal. In other words if your MSRP IS $26,000.00 and you will pay $26,000.00 OTD, then I would be happy with that deal.
If you can pay less for OTD, than the original MSRP, then that is a great deal!
My 2013s Rubicon had a sticker MSRP of $36,665.00. I paid $35,515 OTD, but the Dealer inventories are full at this time in Phoenix and I purchased it on the last day of the month. Dealers have a quota that they must meet to get a refund kick back from Chrysler, it is $200.00 for every wrangler that they sell within that months business, but if they don't meet or exceed their factory quota, then they receive zero (0) rebate. This is why dealing on the last day of the month is always a advantage!

Definitely shop around. I was able to get ~8% off invoice on my Rubicon after talking to multiple dealers in the area.

Thanks for the tips guys!
So far the OTD price of $24,681 before trade in is the best I have gotten. Other dealers won't even try to beat it. I talked to almost everyone in the state of Florida at this point.
With a 6% sales tax its not too bad.

Sounds like a decent price but be careful if you're trading something on it. If a dealer gives you a big discount on a new vehicle they'll sometimes try to make up the difference on your trade.

Shop around and get the best trade in value + price on the vehicle. Find your best price and then buy. Be willing to walk out if you don't get your trade value + the best price on the vehicle. Make them work for your business.
