Did you trade your TJ for a 2012 JK?

Hi Everyone,

I am trading my 2005 TJ Rubicon (6 Speed Manual) for a new 2012 JK Rubicon, which will also be a 6 Speed Manual. I am also going from a 2 door to a four door.

I have read all kinds of hype (mostly from Jeep) explaining why the 2012 is so much better than the TJ and even the 2011 JK and was wondering how much of it is true. Up until now I was under the impression that the 6 speed manual and the 4.0 liter "straight six" engine was the best way to go for performance, and that the V6 they started using in 2007 was not as powerful. Now I am hearing great things about the new "Pentastar" engine (including increased power and better fuel economy) and I think it's time to trade in my 2005, even though it is near mint condition with very few miles on it. I realize the JK is heavier than the TJ and the four door even more so, and am wondering if I will even notice the benefit of increased horsepower and torque.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Didn't trade but......

Yes it is definetly a night and day difference.

TJ 4.0 3.73 31s 5speed high flow exhaust AEM air intake. (yeah I know)

JK bone stock 3.21 auto---LEAVES THE TJ SITTIN' like it is anchored to the ground. Better in the snow than the TJ.

But LIL RED is my DD and isn't going anywhere!!! Well maybe muddin' a little. The JK is too pretty for that!!

I am one of the lucky ones and was able to keep my 03 Rubicon and have a 12 jk Rubicon too. I have to be honest the TJ Wrangler to me is more pure jeep driving experience. Havent had the top of the jk yet but it is a beast of a machine.... Does feel too refined to be a jeep in some sense... One thing I really don't care for is I can flawlessly hang in 2nd on a rolling stop in the TJ where the JK seems to get slugish in that low a roll in 2nd. The JK is suprisingly fast off the line in stick and could probably take on most SUVs.... Nice to have that power and 23 MPG on the highway... They are very different.... I have no problems with either although the jk only has 5k miles on it and the tj 106k.

I traded my 06 Rubicon Unlimited on a 12 Rubicon Unlimited. As much as I liked my TJ Rubi I like my JKUR MUCH BETTER. And the 12 is all Jeep.

Kept the TJ, got the 2 door JK, cause he likes the creature comforts, and the pushbutton discos, and lockers, and just got a 4 door because..... um, we occasionally need to haul people and stuff. Still love my TJ. He loves the JK's... it works.

I have an '11 Sport as my first Jeep, but I have read about a lot of problems with the Penstar engine. Enough that I would not recommended one to a family member until the second or third model year.

I didn't trade in a TJ. Instead, I traded in my 2006 BMW M5 for my 2012 JK Arctic.

hi, one of my trades was 01tj, to 07jk, to 12jk. the tj has a old type
jeep feel, i also had cj5 & cj7. the jk is a more refined feel, and very easy
to live with, also gets much better gas mileage they are all great, you will
find a different feel from 2dr to 4 door. it would be nice to keep both, the
ball is in ur court, i am sure u will get many coments on this, it's all good.

I cant speak from owning a JK, I am a second time TJ owner and would not have it any other way. My bud has the JK and it has its pros to the TJ but it just isnt a true jeep to me. Its nice in a H2 kind of way (lol). Honestly the JK is a super cool suv compared to other suvs but it just doesnt have that true Jeep type experience IMO. I would like to see them return to a more utility rugged model but that day has past it seems.

What problems have you heard about? Cracked heads? it is a problem as many know but i believe it is within an engineers accepted failure rate, (i read that somewhere, in this forum, don't remember where) considering they've made 1,000,000+ 3.6's so far, some were bound to fail.

Early post

Trading my '06 TJ unlimited for a '12 JKU, in the morning.
The TJ is great, a definite improvement over my CJ7s.
My CJ7s were a good step up from my CJ5.
My CJ5 was a humongous upgrade from my MB in high school.
The engineering changes from model to model have created vast improvements every time, with the possible exception of the square headlight models, they never looked right to me.
Have a hard time remembering all the hassles of driving the MB but it was a unique vehicle, flat head four, three speed, two levers for the transfer case, yep there have been a few changes.
Every time I have traded up, I have reminisced about my old jeeps, but in the end have always been happy with the trade.
With the Pentastar 6 and ‘Crush’ I just could not resist, just can’t wait until the boat gets here in the morning and I can get my hands on it.
Although I am asking myself,'A four door jeep, can this be real?'

Beautiful! I traded my problematic 335i before my TJ.... To me that is the ultimate jeep. I've owned a 85 CJ7,87 Wrangler,95 Wrangler,00 Wrangler and now the 03 and 12 JKU. Just love the overall look and feel of the TJ... These jeeps are a end of a era if you ask me, and the JKU is a whole new ball game.

I traded a 94 YJ for my 2009 2dr JK. I just don't have the space for more then 4 cars at onetime. I do miss some of my past automobiles.

My M5 was awesome. Fast, handled like no ones business... After 110,000 miles, I got the infamous Red Cog of Death... which means transmission malfunction. A new transmission for that thing is $15k, no including labor from BMW. I wasn't ready to shell out that kind of cash for a 6 year old car. Plus, it's not really a "farm" vehicle. I have 1/4 mile dirt driveway. She was always dirty.

I love my JKU!

If my life was all wheeling, going to the beach, or cruising with the top down at 50 mph, TJ. But for long road trips, trying to get around cars going 65 mph in a 70, day-in day-out driving, I wouldn't trade my '12 JK for anything. Except maybe a 4 door if I had a kid.

Thank you all for your comments - including those who may soon be adding theirs. I do love the Jeep tradition and know there will be times when I miss my old TJ. I took a new JKU for a test drive (on the road) and it seemed like it would be a bit cumbersome on some of the tight trails I have run on. Maybe the new one will just take a bit of getting used to. I went ahead and ordered my new one - just loaded with creature comforts! It's going to break my heart saying goodbye to my Old Friend, but I think
it's time to move on. I wish I could have both but I could not pass up the excellent deal I was offered for my trade. Someone out there will be getting themselves an awesome TJ and I hope they love it as much as I did.

i traded my 98 TJ Sport for a 2007 Sahara with 3:21 rear. hated it and kicked myself in the butt for a long time. it just didn't have the guts the straight six, 4.0 5 speed did. Traded the 2007 for a 2012 Rubicon 6 speed and i love it. great low end torque especially when you use low-low. a little wider than the TJ but still has great maneuverability. If you trade, go for the penstar and 2012 and don't let them talk you into anything else, its a great combination. better gas mileage too.
