I'm planning to tell my salesman when he calls to tell me it's there that the only reason I want it driven is to put gas in it and see what he says. If they fill it up fine, if not that's fine too. When I bought my Lightning I got $500 in gas from my salesman, but I think I was only able to use about $150 worth before the dealership took the credit cards away from the salesmen. It was also a big pain in the butt to call him and go fill up.

I left Pat's with a full tank.

I've never bought a car from a dealer, new OR used, that didn't have a full tank.

I should devote a full thread to this...

I bought my Jeep on a sunday... they had some aftermarket wheels on it I didn't want. So the next day, they took the wheels off, put on the stockers, and delivered the Jeep to me at work, 60 miles away... ...and filled the tank before they pulled into my office lot.

I was told when we bought our 2008 Chrysler town and country a month ago that when you buy a brand new vehicle it gets a full tank. If you buy a used vehicle you only get a half tank!!!!!

I thought the $500 'dealer fee' covered the 'free' tank of gas and emissions test. Maybe those who didn't get a full tank got such a great deal there was no extra margin to fill it up.

That's the same thing that happen several years ago when I bought my 2004 TJ.
My salesman told me 6 months of gas twice a month. I would stop by and we would drive across the street to the gas station.... The salesmen would use the dealership credit card, until he told me all salesmen had to turn in the credit cars.. I still got about 5 or 6 full tanks of gas.

I swear to God they give you a different sales agreement sheet depending on how much you bargain down their price. I wonder if the "Conveyance Fee" changes based on how much you bargain them down in price...

I would not and will not fill the tank of a vehicle I'm trading in.
A trade and a purchase can not be compared... they take a trade and make another $1,500-$3,000 or more on the sale of that used car.

What makes you think the alleged free tank of gas that we are getting is not already include in the fees they stick to everyone buying a car.

There is nothing wrong to ask/expect the dealer to fill the gas tank, when almost every dealer fills the gas tank out of courtesy...

I just hope no one comes up with, "You should be paying your car dealer to take the trade off your hands." , "You should wash, vacuum, waxed and detailed the vehicle before you make the trade." or "You should help the dealer sell your trade."

Full tank + $30 gas card (shell), 2 bottles of water (cold, in the cup holders), Waxed it, Tire shine, extra set of wiper blades (all 3), 2 free oil changes and first scheduled service....
Between my father and I we have bought 6 vehicles from them over the years (well not that many years, I'm 24) and I doubt they do it for everyone, but hey....

I did put gas in 3 days prior to trading it since I didn't expect my 2012 to get there so soon so it had 3/4 plus in it...

I know the dealers don't keep the cats on the lot with much gas due to gas theft and vehicle theft. Before test drives, it is not uncommon for the salesperson to have to pit gas in the vehicle... about $5 worth. So I'm wondering if those of you who only got a gallon or two at drive off were a way for the sales person to picket a few bucks or an honest oversight.

I used for work at a Dodge dealership back in 04 and we used to put 10 gallons in each vehicle we sold...then it became $10 just to make more money on each sale. It all comes down to what the dealer thinks they can get away with.

Lol- I discussed a trade, agreed on a price
then showed up after with my soft doors on. "we can't give you xxxx for this, where's the doors?" um.... Stolen years ago
I'm like "c-mon-it's got 160,000 on it, just going to get dumped in a auction anyway"
"ok"

Sold the hard top and doors a week later for $1000.

Doesn't the window sticker have a gas amount included? I think if they fill your tank, it's out of courtesy.

I got a " let me talk it over with the sales manager" to begin with. Gave me the "we can't sell this thing without doors speech". That's when I came back with the auction comment, and then they were ok with it.

Oh... And the passenger window had a slice in it

Our local dealer keeps all his on the lot at, or very near, empty. When we were test driving them, every one we jumped in, had the gas light on and the needle would not even move. The salesman appologized and stated that they keep them near empty to prevent gas thefts and in case they have to send one to another dealer on a trade. They got burnt a couple of times by sending cars to other dealers with a full tank. The one they got back was sitting on empty and since they did not "sell" the one they sent to the other dealer they could not deduct the cost of the gas they put into the vehicle. Apparently (at least in Ohio) the dealership can deduct the $$ amount of gas they put in the vehicle (business loss?).

And I can't believe it is not a legit practice, as they sell a ton of cars and would be an easy target for the tax man to hammer if they were being funny with the pencil.

Wickstrom Jeep in Barrington IL gave me a full tank before the test drive and topped it while we signed the papers.
Only thing I didn't get was a ball cap.
Mike was my salesman and worked with me thru e-mails to find the right Jeep for me.
The service dept has answered questions via e-mail regarding parts and such quickly.
I would recommend them if your in Northern Il.
Oh ya, they have plenty of free coffee.
