correction. the auto has 3.73 standard with the 4.10s being a no charge option in 2012 and a 50 dollar upgrade in 2013. the manual has 4.10s

If your 17 years old I highly doubt you will be able to afford a brand new Rubicon by the time you get out of college. I'm not trying to be nosing into your finances but that just seems realistic to me. I'm sure you wouldn't have a hard time finding a used older Rubicon with some miles on it though for a descent price. At your age go with one of the base models and from there do you want with it. You aren't going to be missing out on the Jeep experience in a Sport compared to a higher trim package. A Wrangler is a Wrangler.

a wrangler is a wrangler. but a rubicon is a wrangler on steroids. and honestly if you even question if you need it or not you dont.

I did something similar; I purchased my first Jeep before my senior year of college. Good luck!

I wholeheartedly agree with you, but you can't argue with people here (and for some reason they like killing cats too)

I did not say it to offend you.
Look Jeep Wranglers and the people who ride them are a sub-culture and in the sub-culture its a just what we say. In layman terms its a car just like a chopper is a motorcycle. But for the sub-culture it is what we say it is. A jeep is not a car as a chopper is not a motorcycle.

So when I ask: Are you a Jeeper? I am asking are you part of the sub-culture? It's ok if you are not.

The X was the lowest base model Wrangler before being renamed to Sport Base in 2010.

The main difference between them is that the sport is the low end and i say low end with no intention of saying its a bad vehicle and the rubicon is just in a way a combination of all of them with the ability to go off roading more so then any other of the others stock.

Sahara = Luxury, Rubicon = off road

I have a 2009 Sahara unlimited and have to say the differences based on both my own research before getting it and what I had multiple dealerships tell me is the Sahara has things considered 'luxury' such as better sound systems, seats, etc. while the Rubicon is considered 'off road' with auto sway bar disconnect, lockers, etc. Having said that, both are considered packages (often a bunch of stuff they claim you want but charge you more for it than if you install it yourself). I nearly walked out of the dealership because I started out telling them I didn't want any of their extended warranties or extra 'packages' and the loan guy treated me like I was an idiot for repeatedly refusing them. He even went as far as to talk directly to my wife when I had just bought her a Toyota Camry Hybrid a week earlier as though it was up to her. I went from having a pleasant buying experience to a very unhappy customer within about 15 minutes. Part of the deal included them installing the Bluetooth for hand free on their non-navigation system and while dealing with the coordinating of that I wasn't very patient and ended up having the owner of the dealership call me. I told him the whole experience was fine except the loan guy who I would never buy another vehicle from them because of him. They assured me they would fix that (I insisted they not take it out on him, it just seemed their priorities were on selling a bunch of extra crap some one with a full auto shop and fabrication shop and business didn't need). Having said all that, Sahara and Rubicon are packages that are added on and you pay premium for. I hope that helps.

It is just a plastic overlay held on by a couple of screws and is easily removed. The main diff I can think of for Sahara is that it is the only one that has 18 inch wheels. The Sahara tire is 32.1 inches tall versus about 29 on the stock tire that comes with the Sport.

Wait! If I take the top down am I driving a truck subset or a convertable subset? Or did I end up in some sort of Venn Diagram middle ground?

Wow. I'm glad the OP didn't refer to the hood as a "bonnet" -- otherwise it might go nuclear...

Sahara and Rubicon also have additional sound-deadening as well as the option of black/dark saddle interior that is unavailable on the Sport.

The X became the Sport.

There are now the Sport and the Sport S options (Sport S has more features and options depending on if it is a 2 door or 4 door)....however, in the 2 door, you can get a Sport S with or without power windows/door locks, but you cannot get a Sport with power windows/doorlocks

A sport an X are the same model. They just switch the name every few years. There were sports before the x's too. The S sub model is with the sport/X. That adds power windows and locks. You have an X s

The only real difference between a Rubicon and the other models is that the Rubicon has red shocks. That is why I bought one. That red color is dead sexy.

Ok, perhaps not.

And we don't call them cars out of both tradition and respect, regardless of what dictionary definitions one can dig up...or polymorphic inheritance trees geeks create. Heck, composition thrashes inheritance regardless...and if you are committed to inheritance, I suggest calling your base class "vehicle"...not "car"...and making "convertible" an attribute.

I'm confused a little now as well... I drove a Mountain yesterday... It clearly had more of an off-road package... Where do the Mountain and Islander fit in with the series?

They are both based on the Sport models, but may have the Rubicon shocks and tires.
