If you are gonna mod it at all, lift, rims and tires, etc, just get the base Sport. No sense in spending money for stuff you are just gonna replace. If you wanna mall crawl and/or like the look of paint matching fenders and hard top, get a Sahara. I would only recommend getting a Rubicon if you plan to offroad a lot. There's no sense spending the money for a Rubicon if you never utilize all the features you are paying for, and they are all for offroad, not mall or curb crawling. But I know a good deal of people will buy one just for the decal on the side of the hood. Makes no sense to me but to each his own.

I don't know if anyone suggested this, but have you considered buying a used Rabbit Diesel for the first 20 years of your driving career? Then you could save enough to get a Rubicon when you are 36!!!

Just a thought.

Is there any mechanical difference though? I mean...is the decal the only thing that sets them apart or are there legitimate things that make them special additions?

In North America? No

"Most" of the special editions are just stickers, different seats, painted wheels, and different tires. Sometimes they will have different (Rubi) shocks, or bumpers or a cool hood.

The 2013 Moab was one of the few special editions made that actually had a mechanical difference. While it was based on a Sahara, you could order it with a rear locker. And I guess the 10A's had slightly stiffer springs.

Different countries have different features. I remember a few months ago we were looking at someone's Mountain Edition in South Africa...and those came with rear lockers.
