Dirty with less than 400 miles and almost killed a fawn!

Drove the new Gecko down to the land we hunt on today to take down some hunting blinds I have out there and do a little shooting. The wheeling is far from extreme with mainly overgrown somewhat muddy fire roads and fields that I have driven many times in other vehicles we've owned.

In any event with less than 400 miles on the odometer I did manage to get it dirty (inside and out), put a few faint scratches on it from branches dragging across the paint, and use the 4wd.

Not really a big deal but we did encounter something cool on our little jeep adventure that I thought I would share. I've got blinds set up on the edges of a few fields (and in the middle of the woods). We drove over to one of the ones on a field edge and parked. We got out and looked to the left and noticed a small fawn curled up in the grass trying its best to be still. I then noticed a second fawn not 6 inches in front of my front passenger tire doing the same thing. If I had stopped 6 inches later I would have run it over!

We were parked on an incline and my wife was afraid being in a manual I'd roll into the one almost under the tire when I tried to back up. I lightly nudged it with my foot and it refused to move so I picked it up and placed it next to the other one. Really cool experience!

The mother was no where in sight and I was glad because deer can be quite nasty and I imagine quite displeased with me if it saw me messing with its young.

So for now the little fawn is safe to grow so it can be harvested later.

All in all great day of fun using the Jeep.

Thanks...and it was way cool! The fur was crazy soft just like a new born puppy. Odd thing was it didn't make a peep the entire time I was touching it. Only when I set it down next to the other one and let go did it start to cry.

When it started to cry I told my wife we needed to get out of there because when the mother came she was going to beat both me and my Jeep down! I was picturing Tommy Boy when I said it.

Well, sadly...you probably already killed that deer.... You moved it from its hiding spot where it's mother left it, and then got your scent all over it.
This is a very good example of why we need to stay on established trails (I know you were on an overgrown trail...I'm just saying its a good example to others not to make their own trail).

Obviously not a first choice to disturb it but you handle situations as they come. If it makes you feel better it was moved about 5 feet next to the other fawn that was bedded down (and not touched).

BTW the scent thing is a wives tale. The bond the mother has with the fawn is far stronger than any fear she may experience with human presence or scent. I can tell you first hand that mama deer has zero fear of you or your scent when it comes to caring for her young.

Deer look so peaceful when you see them standing in a field but when you spend any amount of time with them in close proximity and they know you are there you get to see a different side to them. They will stand their ground, snort, stomp, and even charge/attack if pissed off enough.

I've been both charged and even chased by angry deer and I'm man enough to admit I was screaming like a little girl when it happened.

Well, we'll just disagree....but if it makes you feel better, then fine.
My point to others is simple....stay on paths, don't touch or disturb wildlife......this is one reason environmentalist try to shut us down, and our offloading areas shrink.

Agreed about caring for the environment the best we can.

I know this forum is about Jeeps and the things we do to them / with them and if this was a PM I'd let it drop (agree to disagree) but I want to be sure that misinformation isn't spread publicly. What disturbs me is that someone may read this thread and think that if they are ever in a situation where they or one of their kids happens upon a fawn and they touch it that they have just sentenced it to death and should take it home, to a shelter, or simply put it out of the misery that they think is about to come upon it by being abandoned.

A doe is not going to abandoned its fawn because you touched it any more than a human mother would because the neighbor touched her baby. If ever in a situation where a fawn has been handled the best thing to do is to leave it in the area you found it and then leave the area. The mother will be back and the fawn will be just fine (apart from other predators it may encounter as part of its natural life).

Now that we've cleared up deer behavior we can get back to discussing our behavior with our Jeeps.

Ummm....ok...but one of a fawns defenses is the fact that it has no scent buddy.....instead of leaving it alone...you picked it up, took pictures, and put your scent all over it.
Then by your own admission you said you put it down in a different place and it started crying.......so now any predator in the area has heard and can now smell it.
But hey, you got some neat pictures.
Heres some good advice....dont touch wildlife...back away and leave it alone.

Technically its called bleating (I know I said crying but I was being generic for those who might not know the term). Bleating is what it does when it is calling for its mother. There is no such thing as a deer with out a scent, all deer (fawns included) do have a scent.

I supposed I could have left it alone with a real risk of injuring if not killing it when I moved my Jeep. But having a bit more than a clue about deer behavior I understood that the biggest risk of harm from moving it was to myself if mommy showed up.

Maybe you should stick with discussing something you have a clue about. I'm getting the sense that maybe you aren't in the hunting thing and just looking for a reason to find fault with those who are.

So again I'm asking politely....please don't spread false information. Speak and share information about what you understand and sit back and learn information from others where you don't understand. I'm not perfect but in general that is how I try to operate and it seems to have served me well up until this point.

well actually Jack Hanna, I'm an avid hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman that spends a lot of time in and around Yellowstone .
And as for spreading "bad information".... my only point was to LEAVE WILDLIFE ALONE!
Its assh*les like you that give us a bad name, and the reason tree huggers want to shut down all trails. This is a great example of why people need to stay on established trails and paths

I'm not a hunter but I was curious about the human scent myth so I turned to google and found this site:

http://www.knowhunting.com/article.html?id=39

Seems like both of you have valid points, according to that site.

Now quit fighting and get back to Jeep talk!!!

You are probably right on the blinding them point but I thinks its awesome! I love my jeep but now I'm kinda jealous of the color! Now I have 1 more question off the jeep subject, do you gun or bow hunt?

I think it is a hard color to appreciate unless you see it in person.

On the hunting question...Both. I crossbow hunt and the wife uses a compound. Each have pluses and minuses to them. When general firearm season starts we put the bows away and switch over to rifles (308).
