I would say not normal.

Unless the bump causes you to tap the brakes.

I have a 2012 Unlimited Rubicon and have never had the cruise control drop out when hitting a bump in the road. At least not with the normal type bumps that one encounters on paved roads where it is otherwise safe to use the cruise control.

Can you better define "a mid sized bump or hole in the road"? Could you possibly be tapping the brake with you foot by accident when you hit a bump? That would certainly cause the cruise control to drop out

I had this happen a few times on a small trip we took. It seemed it happened when the Jeep hit a bump that made the suspension lift/airborne to some degree, and got knocked out on landing.

my guess
traction control, or you are hitting the brake slightly.

Had that happen in a dodge truck...the spring (in that truck) that returns the pedal to it's highest normal position was weak or just need adjusting so it would hold the pedal
tighter. Possibly your problem?

Yes, big bump. Traction control. No worries. It is for your own good.

Mine is a 2012 JKU arctic manual. Mine does it too. Especially when it hits wide spread washboard type bumps. Like they are about 2-3 vehicle lengths (unlimited lengths...so 3-4 of u with "real jeeps").

I think it's the traction control kicking in which makes the cruise go off.

Noticed this on my 6 speed Sport last week while on a road trip. It suprised me as I'd never had it happen before in the first 11K miles which included two more road trips using cruise. The traction control explanation makes sense.

We just drove 2200 miles in the past week. Cruise never kicked out from a bump.

Trip included Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. How's that for sample size?

Mine does this on I-95 every time I hit a certain dip. It's really not a bump so I'm not sure why the traction control would kick in. But mine definitely does it also....

Wow, I drive NYC streets and higways daily. Never had the Cruise Control shut off. How big of a bump was it?

I'm sure that was aimed at the OP but I'm gonna chime in with my story and say that it isn't even a bump but more like a massive dip that cuts mine off.

My '12 has had the cruise cut out going on I-40 at a bridge over a river, where the asphalt changes to concrete. I travel this way every day,and it has only happened once.

For me cruise control is nice feature that only works if I don't shift past 4th gear.
(Manual with 3.21s and 34s)

Never had cruise turn off on me.

Check to see if the traction control or ESP lights come on if it did then that is what happened. If any of the safety stuff come on it always bumps the CC off.

Need clarification: when you say "turn off cruise control", do you mean that the system actually shuts off, that the indicator lamp in the dashboard is no longer lit... or that the system is still "on" but disengaged, that the system is on but not controlling the vehicle speed?

Knowing the answer to the above could point to a very different diagnosis.

The only time i've lost cruise control is when turning sharply enough to slide the brick of the pedal...

This happened to me as well. Went over a bridge and the transition gap was bad. 6 speed with 1600 on it. Shocked me at first because I didn't know what happened. No warning lights were flashing, so I reset the cruise and it seemed fine.

Cruise indicator was still on in my case. Rig just stopped holding speed.

What I saw was equivalent to "cancelling" the cruise. The system is still on but not controlling speed. It can be resumed without turning the entire system on again.

Yep, happens to me. Have a '12 JKU Sahara Unlimited. Cleveland has some of the absolute worst roads I have ever driven in my life. While travelling on Route 2 West there a is a large bump across the highway that cancels my cruise. I actually have my finger on the resume now because I know it will do it every time.

its normal on all cars. some are more sensitive. if there is a spike in rpms or the traction control the computer will disengage the cruise because it thinks your sliding.
