Do you have Vandalism Anxiety?

Whenever I leave the freedom panels off my jeep, and I go into a store, I have such terrible anxiety that some hoodlum is going to f with it.

For example, I have a cell phone holder suction cupped to the window - granted it only cost me $12.00 - or the 2 dollars worth of quarters i have on the center console...

Does theft / vandalism happen frequently to jeeps? Are my fears irrational?

I have never had my car broken into before.

nope...but i do have insurance. the only thing thats valuable in my jeep are my jump ropes which i use for my workouts, 3 pairs of sunglasses that are kept locked...and???? i guess thats it.

i'm also getting a cheap cb soon so that maybe the most valuable thing.

I'm always worried if I'm on any kind of hill. Or not. Some one taking it out of gear and watchig it wreak havoc ...

I try to keep valuables out of sight.. But really, locks keep honest people honest. If someone wanted into any of the locked consoles it'd be pretty easy with just a screwdriver and/or brute force. The real worry I have is someone tossing soda/lit cigarette into one of my seats. Not much I can do about it though, I much prefer to roll with the top down and doors off.

Another question...

Does hitting the "lock" button on the remote do anything when the doors are off? Does the security system detect shakes / motion of the vehicle when armed?

I dunno about motion sensing, but i know the factory security on my old GC wouldn't let you start the car without disarming it... (That was a fun day with a dead battery.)

I've never worried about vandalism, but we live in a pretty good area. I have worried, as someone else already mentioned, about someone or a kid jumping in, removing the emergency break and knocking it out of gear and my jeep rolling away.

haha great, something else to worry about. So I take it then that the transmission isn't locked in gear when the key is removed (thinking back to my saab days).

So I guess I just need to man up and get over it.

Yep, leave it unlocked without valuables or lock it and just not worry. And vandalism...it happens in the "good areas". In bad areas, they break in to steal stuff. Whenever I am in "better than good" areas, I'm conscious of the bored and privileged teens wreaking havoc on my jeep. But I don't worry about it. Heck, with a forecast of no rain today, I walked out of the mall and realized it had rained HARD on my 10A Rubi (doors and top off). Then I drove in a light rain home. Then it became a downpour with strong winds as I was putting the doors/windows on. I was pissed at the weather guys then just decided it was safer in the house than outside with rain and lightning. The rain had a great time in the jeep. Bottom line, it may happen eventually(vandalism), but more than likely it won't. If it does, the sun will come up tomorrow and stuff can be replaced, even the entire jeep if needed! Enjoy that jeep!

Indeed! It becomes a mind set... Bought my Harley Road King Classic in '07. Leather type bags and removable trunk. I bought locks for the bags but never installed them. Been all over with it never had anyone bother it. Same for my Jeeps over the years. I think a Benz or Beamer is a more likely target than a Jeep... Especially one that looks "real" and used, a little mud, top off, etc.

I have a little diamond plate box rivetted to the dash right by the door that I keep a pack of smokes in. I rip the top off the pack, so you could take them in half a second while walking by, without even breaking stride. It's somewhat tempting actually.

Over two summers, I've had maybe three packs get taken, even parking at some of the shadier places in El Paso (the worst is a certain walmart...). There's certainly folks out there that will swipe your console change, sunglasses, etc. but they don't seem that common, and if you run naked, you really can't have that much sitting out loose anyways.

on my '10, the shifter locks with the key (automatic tranny), and the alarm will go off, but only if you jar it pretty significantly. Someone climbing in, digging around, packing up a bunch of stuff, and leaving would probably not set it off. It does lock the back door though, and that makes the little cubby in the back rather difficult to get into

HAHA, speaking of Walmart... last time I went shopping I went to Target instead of Walmart because when my my roof panels were off, I thought bad stuff was less likely to happen at Target.

I worry more about the rain with the tops off. My aftermarket head unit wasnt just a cheap pos. But ya, I worry about people messing with my stuff. I keep my stuff locked in the glove box and compartment. It keeps honest people honest, but it also keeps it out of sight, and out of mind.

Don't waste your time worrying about a$$holes. They will arrive from time to time whether you are careful or care free...and care free is a much better way to spend your time. On the other hand...if I ever catch one of them DURING the act, they will have something to worry about

I'm definitely with you guys worrying about vandals. I don't ever put the rear windows in anymore (I just let it rain inside the rear) so I don't leave anything worth stealing inside. I am, however, worried about some jackazz hocking a lugie or spitting their gum on my seats. I've actually had someone throw their gum in through my open sunroof in my old Mazda.

I, personally, wouldn't leave anything of value in my jeep. If I have the top down, I will take the car seat out. Other than the baby and car seat, there is really nothing of value, unless they want my in-n-out receipts..

When I had my TJ, I came out to my Jeep and I had locked the doors, but this bum unzipped the window (thankfully), sat in front seat and drank my leftover grape slush. Possibly took a nap, stole my change and got out without zipping my window.

Now with my JKU, I have in parked in my garage or if at work leave unlocked and don't leave anything of value in it.

All i keep in my jeep is a pair of jumper cables and a flashlight, and a couple cd's and a cell phone charger locked in the center console. I leave my doors unlocked and the rear windows are usually off. If someone were to take everything im out about $100, cheaper then a slashed top or broken front door window.

Vandals should be more frightend about having the unfortunate displeasure of meeting me. Whereas most people have a filter that stops them from behaving in certain ways and doing certain things, I don't.

I used to leave the doors to the Jeep unlocked in my apartment complex, just so that I could catch someone breaking into my jeep so that I could scar, ahem, teach the individual an important lesson about what happens to someone who vandalizes someone else's property.

I won't go into details but I will say that it worked. Brilliantly.

You are right about it being cheaper. However, it would still be sh*tty to have to purchase new jumper cables, cellphone charger, maybe floor mats. A local Jeeper got his stereo stolen and for some odd reason the top to his center console was ripped out as well.

I worry more about stupid damage then actual damage.

Actual damage - stereo gets stolen.
Stupid damage - dash is ripped, cut, gouged, destroyed trying to get stereo out.

Actual damage - recovery rope is stolen.
stupid damage - tailgate is pried open bending a corner by the window, screwdriver in the keyhole, rear window cracked

You get the idea. I would rather have a secondary alarm with proximity sensors for alerting me, than locking the doors and hoping the factory alarm works. I'd rather have them try the door handle, and get the surprise that it opens and sets off the alarm, then setting up the alarm to lock the doors. Add a two way alarm pager and you know what set it off too.

I have my vehicles messed with so much in the past that I'm over it. I have full coverage insurance for a reason and I don't let my "stuff" own me. After a rather large fire came within 25 yards of my front door years ago I surrendered to those fears and don't let that crap bother me. It's a nuisance when it happens and I might get angry for a few minutes but it's just stuff...I still have my health, family, friends, etc.

I throw everything under the Tuffy Security Deck in the back and leave the console and glove box unlocked.

My brother in law left his soft top JK unlocked (always a good idea on soft tops) but console locked because he had a cheap GPS in it. The damage to the console was a LOT more expensive than the stupid GPS!
