Newbie here looking to buy my first Wrangler. Like many of you, I am underwhelmed by the color options for the 2014s. I'm looking at the remaining 2013s and found a great price on a Rock Lobster Moab edition -more than $6k off MSRP.
I took some photos of the vehicle and have been looking at them regularly. Sometimes I think the color is just great - a quirky shade of red with its own unique character. I know it will look fabulous in the desert of southern Utah. But on a day-in day-out basis, I'm not so sure. I'm trying to imagine how I'm going to feel about after a few months or years. I dread walking out one morning, looking at it and saying to myself 'What in the world were you thinking?'
For those of you with RLs, do you like your color more or less over time?
I dont own a RL jeep... However I would never buy one in that shade of red but thats a personal preference. I am sure most people that have RL say they love it. I feel like thats one of those love it or hate it colors. With that said, if you dont have to many reservations I say go for it. It would like sick with blacked out wheels and black accents. I prefer the dark red myself. 6k of MSRP on a MOAB sounds like a decent deal tho.

Went and looked at one before I found my 10A and left the dealership thinking what a terrible color. I've owned some really questionable colors in my life but Rock Lobster is just awful. My unsolicited .02.
'13 Bright White JKRU 10th Anniversary
Almost bought a Rock Lobster at night. Red was my first color choice. The sales rep told me wait until the day time (why I picked this dealership to buy from). He was well versed in Jeepage and knew what he was talking about. I came back a couple of days later during the day time and was glad I did not go RL. So White it was..safe..a little boring..but unquestionably a good color for Jeeps... If it was Flame Red...I would have done it..

I personally am happy with my decision NOT to buy a RL Rubicon. My wife looked at it and said "you seriously are not considering buying a pink Jeep are you?" I do still second guess not getting the Crush Rubicon though, which is just as loud, but definately does not have pink hues. My wife referred the Crush Jeep as a "Tic Tac".
If you already have hesitation IMO I wouldn't buy it. Wait until you find a deal on a color you can live with- even if its not one you "love". My Rock Lobster was Smurf Blue. (Don't know the actual color). Dealers were practically begging me to take them off their hands. The deal was tempting....Silver isn't exactly exciting but so happy I didn't take the Smurf Road. (No offense to anyone).
Two months with a Rock Lobster Sport and it's one of my all time favorite colors. Avoid the herd mentality and buy whatever trips your trigger. If someone is helping you with the payments, ask their opinion. Ignore all others, including mine.

I didn't think I'd like it then I started so see a few that color. We stopped by the local dealer and he had one, both my wife and I liked it. Really bright, desert Sun that day and it looked great. It had the painted roof and black fenders, certainly better than all RL.
I do like bright colors I have a yellow Corvette and my Jeep was Flame Red. Next Jeep, 2014, is looking to be Amp'd!
When I was first looking to buy, I saw a RL and liked the colour. When I went back to make the order, after seeing it again, I decided against the colour (seemed too pink) - although, it had stock alum wheels, but last week I was back at the dealership and saw it with aftermarket black 33" wheels and some black stickers and it looked awesome. These two separate days I saw it and would have thought it was Flame Red if I didn't know that colour was not available. So, I guess it looks quite different depending on the light conditions - try to see it in various light conditions if you're not sure.
Don't worry about other people's opinions. Only you need to be happy with it. Don't settle if you're not sure.
Agreed. Get a color that's "love at first sight" and you don't have to think about.
It's tempting, but don't settle for something less than your favorite to save a few grand right this second. Good things come for those who wait.
That was Plan A. I waited for the 2014 announcement, hoping for a winter chill, granite crystal or something else that would make it an easy decision. Now it looks like we have less to choose from with little that's new. (Can't sell the wife on anvil - seems to be guy color.)
So it's either figure out which of the available colors I can live with or wait. But for what and when?
I just got my "lohbstah" last week. I always wanted a yellow or dozer but couldn't find one with my options. Turns out the local dealer had a jeep with the options I wanted but in RL. Initially I was a bit skeptical. It does look a bit pink in certain light. But after test driving and looking at it over a few days I took the plunge. Also has the black appearance group which works great. I love it. I'm such a happy first time jeep owner. I wouldn't want any other colour right now.. and now that it's discontinued all the better. Mind you I drove half way across the country for the summer, from Illinois to New Mexico, and I still haven't seen another RL. Pretty unique if you ask me
I thought the color looked great online, but when I saw it in person I felt it looked like a bright red that faded in the sun. Commando Green was my first choice and I almost skipped that when I first saw it. It looks more pea colored that O.D. colored in bright sun.
The "special" colors for 12/13 seem to be based on washed out pastel type tones and are very hit and miss.
The dealership I got mine from had a Dune Sahara that I probably could picked up for the price of my relatively stripped Sport. The sales guys were laughing about the amount of people that looked at it and said it was the worst color they'd ever seen. They knew it was going to sit on the lot forever.
I'd never heard of the Rock Lobster color until this forum. People said they don't look pink in person.
I was at the dealer the other week for something and I looked over at the Wrangler area on the lot. I saw what looked like a pink Jeep in the mix. I walked over and sure enough on the window sticker: "Rock Lobster". Hmm...not my thing.
I can see why Rock Lobster lasted less than a year and Chrysler went back to classic Flame Red. I dont know what they were thinking replacing it with RL. Rock Lobster looks like a 10 year old Flame Red. Not very desirable when buying a brand new vehicle. It does have a pinkish hue in the sun which just looks bad.

Definately try to find some pics of one with the mods you want. Just for example. I normally like duller colors. Greys, blacks, blues ect. At the jeep dealership where I bought a billet jku for my gf, they had a jeep that had the exact lack of options I wanted. But it was dozer. I wasn't a fan of the way it looked sitting there on steel wheels. A couple weeks went by and I went by the dealership on way to st louis and it had a nice set of tires and wheels on it. I had to stop by and check it out. Loved it, bought it, had it for a couple months and now it sits on a lift and 35's.
What I am trying to say here is that some colors just need to be modded to take full advantage of. I believe dozer and ghecko are prime examples, RL might be that way to. So bright and literally yank your eyes to them because they stand out.
