Does the JK's computer re-learn?

I've starting driving and shifting differently over the last few weeks. I've noticed some changes not only in the way my engine responds but also in the amount of gas required between shifts. I decided to drive as lightly as I could for the past several fill ups. I noticed that during the first full tank of gas doing this nothing big changed and if anything...I was "jerking" the jeep more between shift points. I suppose the jeep was used to getting more gas when shifting but I wanted to see if I could apply the least necessary to shift smoothly and maintain momentum. I think I did.

After 2x full tanks of gas and nearly 600 miles of in city driving later, it seems my jeep is now more accepting of the little gas I use between shifts. I can almost shift without it sometimes just by timing alone and the gears change smoothly without any "jerking". There is no clutch slippage and everything feels great. I want to add that I change gears at these RPMs:

1-2 = changed around 1800
2-3 = changed at 2400
3-4= changed at 2400
4-5 = changed at 2600
No 6th gear usage

The best MPG I ever got was when the jeep was stock. It was about 18.6 in city and around 19.3 on the highway. My last fill up now after driving this way (getting beeped at and driving like and old lady) was 19.8 in city. This was calculated at the pump = miles driven vs gas used. I'm very happy with the results and my wallet is thanking me because I'm now seeing around 275 miles per tank prior to the DTE light coming on VS the 240 miles from before.

It seems as if the PCU has learned to make use of less gas between shifts and to possibly more proportionally use the little gas I apply better when driving. The jeep is very smooth now possibly more so than I've ever experienced. I got to thinking about it "learning" a new pattern of driving. Any dice?

2010 JK manual 3.21
33x12.5R15 duratracs
15x8 alloys
2.5 TF lift with adj front/rear tracks

good gas mpg

hi, i get 20mpg most of the time and close to 30 at times,
got 17'' factory up grade, auto 5 spd, 3.21 rear end, ECO turned
on, no sense getting civic....life is good and with a smile on my face.

Not on a manual. Do they change fuel blends in your area. Maybe that has something to do with it, winter/summer blends. The computer will slightly adjust shift points on an auto and they'll feel crisper but on our 10 manuals it doesn't apply.

I say yes.

Some say no.

I am tuned, Superchips says it takes up to 100 miles to learn the tune. What that means, I don't know

I'm thinking yes too. Just as it learns your driving pattern + shifting patterns during break in, why would it not adjust later.

I still say no because your shift patterns on a manual aren't consistant like on an auto. It does exactly like you say if you have an auto.

I don't think it learns "you" just fuel trims and timing <---- something like that

No way in hell I could shift under 2000 before. Especially with the bigger meats.

First gear shifting at 1000, as long as I don't bury it she'll move without lugging or jerking.
I deff had to change the way I drive. Big difference in one week with the bigger tires.

Gas mileage has stayed the same (dash readout)

Shifting consistently at the same rpms is easy to do and driving the same terrains can be as well. Why would the computer not learn to accommodate less or more fuel used between shifts or under routine driving circumstances?

I think there is a difference between "learning" and "adjusting"

I don't think the program can in a manual, but I obviously could be wrong. The bottom line is that you're getting a good result. I haven't had changes in my 10 Rubi 6spd. until the fuel has gone from winter to summer blends in the northeast. Are you sure it's not fuel related. Either way it's a win.

Don't know but its making me think switching over to 35s here soon isn't going to hurt that bad...

I'll just take off the steel doors + replace with half cargo doors (losing 120 lbs) in the process and grab a set of 35s with the 3.21s. I'm telling ya THOSE DOORS ARE HEAVY!

But you're running one? I've thought about that but I really don't like the way jeeps look without a spare. We'll some of the monster MOAB rigs you see out there look pretty good.

Close to 30 mpg at times - really? Snap a pic to prove that one please.

Btw - When you say ECO is "on" - that just means your ECO indicator shows when you're driving at lower rpm's in a more "fuel efficient manner"...it's not an actual "mode" or mechanism built in to save gas or increase mpg. It's simply an indicator light and nothing more...

well for me it has definitely changed in a good way my tan of gas would last about 5 trips to work and then i had to fill her up, and that was getting around 19mpg,, then I changed to 33"s so I cant really know what the true MPG is until I proCal it, but today is my friday and its only used half tank, 5 trips to work n back,,, im very very surprise,,, the only real difference that I have notice in variables are that now im not really concern in shifting below certain RPMs just when it feels and hears right i do,,, and I put gas on a diff gas station that normal,,, so just for what ifs im going to keep putting gas there...
