Does the Wrangler X Roof Leak?

Sorry my first post is a downbeat question but I searched the previous threads and it seems most people with water leaks are related to the freedom top. I am wanting to buy a 2-door Wrangler X with a soft top. Are the 2-door soft top Wrangler roofs leaking as well? I really like the new jeeps as the back seat looks much safer for kids than the previous generations however if the roof leaks on the model I want I will buy the older jeep and deal with the seat.

Thanks....

I don't know if all soft-tops leak, but i got the leaky one.

Freedom top leak is much easier to fix then the soft top leak. So go with hard top.

PS: And trust me, you won't regret the JK. I LOVE IT, and wouldn't trade it for anything else. I am a proud JK-X owner, and after seeing what my X can do, I can't even imagine what Rubicon is capable of.

I have no experience with the soft top, but after three days of hard rain here in Ohio I have zero leaks in an 08 wrangler x hard top. If it keeps up, I let you know how the snorkel works.

Had my 4-door X since October, with never a drop leaking through the Freedom top.

I can't speak for the soft top but my hard top is leak free and we have been having torrential rainfall lately. 10 months, no leaks.

I have an 08 with soft top and half doors and it doesnt leak when Im mobile....I do get water on the door panel in the middle both sides in a hard rain when parked....Im not to worried about it I had Jeeps before...its just part of it

I have had real good luck at work sealing up both hard top leaks as well as soft top hard door leaks.....I do a couple 4 door hardtops a week and have ZERO comebacks thusfar....The soft tops are pretty easy to seal as well A Piller corner or a mid door leak...sometimes the A Piller leak requires a new header(Mostly on 07s) foam in certain places usually fixed it right up....In 08 the hard door surround seals were redesigned and are much better ....Gary

thanks for the replies, sounds like most of the '08 guys are not having problems....I'll probably visit the dealer right after a downpour and open a few of them up to look for leaks, then buy one of the dry ones.....

I have a new (few days) 2008 X and right when I got it, it rained for two days. The passenger side leaked twice. I think it was because the door was not closed all the way. I was thinking of going through a car wash to test it.

I have a 1 year JK 2 door 1/2 doors soft top that leaks on the passenger side door only. It has been to the dealership 3X to fix but still leaking. I have an appointment on April 2 where a water leak specialist (never heard of one before) is coming to look at it. The dealership has completed the service bulletin twice and replaced the door seal twice to no avail. I traded a '97 TJ 1/2 doors soft top that didn't leak as bad as this one. I know some people say it's a Jeep it's supposed to leak but this one leaks so badly that my passenger seat is soaked after a few hours of moderate rain. If this person on Wednesday can't fix it, I will be making a claim to Chrysler for a lemon.

Have an '08' X with the basic soft top (no Sunrider) and have had no problems. When I purchased my JK, I actually purposely visited the dealership on a day when it was downpouring at times (highly recommended actually!) I demo'd three different X model 2-doors, all with the standard soft top (apparently my dealership doesn't order many of the Sunrider tops on their 2-door X models??). There were no leaks observed in any of them. I've only had my '08 a short time, but so far, no leaks and no problems.

2 door soft top with half doors.

The drivers side door leeks like a stuck pig. I came out one Saturday morning to half an inch of water in the drivers side footwell. The dealership has an order open for new upper half doors since they can't seem to fix the issue with all the door tweeking and weather stripping they've replaced.

I would suggest when buying the soft top to give the rugs a feel and even pull them up and check for wetness. After my last visit to the dealer I decided to check the pasanger side for shits and giggles. There had been no visable sign of leaking. I pulled that rug out and must have drained half a gallon of water out of it.

My '08 leaked a little on the passenger side, but I when I opened the door I discovered that the seal had come out of the door. I put it back in and it hasn't leaked since. Just gotta keep your eye on the seals!

Good point, when I had my 07 the driver side leaked a couple times so I had the seal replaced, other than that it was good-to-go.

Asking if the "Freedom Top" leaks is like asking if the sky is blue!! Yes, they leak, and if they don't now, they WILL.

The body of the vehicle, by virtue of its design, will flex; and as it "flex's" (sp?) so do the T-Tops on the Freedom Top.

It is not the rain coming down that leaks in.....it is the water that accumulates on the gasket sections for the t-tops that is permitted to come in, as the sections flex.

Poor design, bad engineering.....call it what you will, but I got the dealer to buy my "Freedom Top" back from me after four Revisions to the Top, and still the leaks continued.

All T-Tops leak, on all cars, over time.

I just took the top off for the first time today in New Hampshire and am hoping I put it back on right, and there will be NO leaks. I have soft top only and so far, so good. I was concerned about the long-term issues with the hard top - sounds like a probabe good decision.

I'm unique too though - have a garage at home and a parking garage at work, made my decision to buy a jeep much easier.

Rained like a mother, no leaks in my freedom top. Took it off today for the first time....easy as pie! We'll see after we put it back on. Waiting for my soft top to come in....after having more than just the front part of my top off, I really can't wait to put the soft top on as having your top completely off is much more fun than just half off!

I'll update if I get any leaking....

07 Unlimted with a freedom top. Worst snow winter in memory and not a drop of melting snow inside. No garage and the Jeep sat out all winter. Also drove it in deluge rain storms and not a drop inside.

YES the Freedom leaks

YES!!! The Freedom top leaks. Mostly during heavy rain when I'm driving. It seems to be forced in, then when I break, it flows in from just above the rear view mirror. Took it back to the dealer 4 times for repair/adjustment and they couldn't get it right. Asked them to swap the hard top for a soft top and give me my sticker option price back. They refused. I wrote the company and registered my Jeep as a Lemon under the Mass Lemon Law. Three days later the dealer called and offered the swap. I now have a soft top and my money.
