I just found this poll. Mine has never used a drop between changes then all of a sudden it is down to a little over a quart in it. No leaks or smoking that. Friend of mine told me his dads 07 unlimited has done the same thing. It was only about 1500 miles on the last oil change.
25k on the engine and is just the dailey drive around town and maybe a trip to deer camp. Never been driven hard.

Somewhere on the engine block. Impossible to see without being on a lift.

oil burning started about 6 months ago

'08 4 door. 50k miles. At first I just smelled a very mild oil smell after long drives, but never thought anything of it. At 40k mi I had my oil changed at a quick lube place, and they told me it was WAY low. They started trying to sell me different types of oil, etc, so I thought it was BS. I checked it occasionally after that, and it was OK, but then at 45k miles it was WAY low again. Seems like maybe it burns more as the oil ages, or maybe just a fluke in my driving patterns. Now at 50k mi it was really low again, so I took it to the dealer and I'm starting the oil consumption test. They want me to bring it in every 1000 miles so they can check it.

This is my 2nd Wrangler and my 5th Jeep all together. I owned three Grand Cherokees each went above 130k miles each and never ever a problem, so the idea that burning oil is "normal" for a moden day vehicle is crap in my mind.

It seems like some people have a problem and some people don't. It would be interesting to see if there are other commonalities among the people that have the problem.

Very similar to what I just discovered just this past weekend. 44000 miles, I just changed it, and it was 3 quarts low. Last changed 6000 miles ago, so about 1 qt / 2000 miles. Friend of mine works at a Jeep shop, he says they see this a lot, and tell people its normal, (because Chrysler will not stand behind their products), and tells me he knows its not right. He'll look into Chrysler known problem list and get back to me if they've disclosed a problem and a solution. I'll let you know. Until then, I'm replacing the plug wires (because the existing ones are crap), and while replacing the plugs I'll run a compression test. I'll post data this weekend. This sucks.

I changed out the spark plugs, and since the wires were crap (I broke two of them), I replaced the wires too. The plugs looked fine - maybe a drop of oil on the threads of #6, but otherwise fine. While I was in there, I ran a compression check on one of the cylinders which read 30 psi. Gauge must be broken, or I could not seat it firmly enough because that's way too low. It is difficult to get the gauge into every spark plug hole, particularly the rear ones. So, Since the plugs looked fine, I gave up on the compression test - inconclusive. Replaced plugs and wires, engine starts right up and purrs. 30 psi has got to be wrong. So, I'll keep a close eye on the oil level over the next weeks until the next oil change, then I'll pop out #6 and have a look at it. Did not check the PCV valve because I could not get the hose clamp off. There must be a special tool.

Exclamation Have not seen this since my '72 Nova in high school

We have an 07 Rubicon Unlimited with just 53K miles. Never noticed any oil burning between changes. Never bothered to even check. But just this oil change I noticed I only drained 2 quarts. That's a burn of 3.5 quarts in 5K miles! Wow!
I don't notice any blue smoke or symptoms or leaks, so not sure what is going on. I guess I will buy some new plugs and inspect each cylinder to see if I can see a problem (may as well change them if I am going thru the trouble). Crazy if I have to do a rebuild after so few miles.

Where did my oil go!?

This is my first post, I found this forum because I Google'd "Wrangler JK burning oil" haha.

I am glad I am not alone at least...
I just changed my oil (as the low oil indicator was coming on every once in awhile) and there was maybe 1.5 quarts in there if I am lucky.

I have a 2008 2DR JK X manual. About 41k miles.
I noticed it within the last maybe 10k miles?

I am going to start adding a quart about every 1k miles now.

Good idea to actually "CHECK" your oil once in a while. Hence the invent of the "Dip Stick!!

Oh, welcome to the forum!!
