2008 JK 4door Rubi. 33k miles. Used 1.5 quarts in 3k miles. Owned it for nearly a year and have put 5k on it in that time.

Just found this forum while googling the oil consumption issue. Actually didn't know I had an issue until a friend of mine called last night wanting to know if it burned oil. Went out and checked and sure enough it was down a quart and half. Love the Jeep but that engine is a turd.

Dangs that's a lot of oil. Why do you continue to buy such expensive oil when most of it ends up in the atmosphere??
I would recommend a heavier non synthetic oil and see if your consumption goes down. Bet it would.
Good luck.

They are not fabricated, do a search on this forum even, and you'll see how many oil burning issues are with the 3.8's.
On my X the engine was changed under warranty by the dealer at 40K after a consumption check, it was gobbling 1 quart at 600 miles the POS.
The new one is OK so far at 10K.

(....I'll go take a look again)

I have a 2007 JK 2 dr. and is using a quart around 1000 miles and maybe less even. Have been reading about it and have seen some of the possible"fixes" as pcv valve issue, carbon build up(use sea foam), Use heavier oil, replace short block.
Other then the short block do the other ideas make sense? I am leaning towards trying a heavier oil. I bought it used over 2 years ago but it only has 29k miles. Do I have any warranty from jeep as a second owner? Definitely not normal as chrysler says to burn oil like that.

I haven't had this 2010 but for 5000 miles and it has 35000 miles on it but so far no measurable oil usage on this past change. It is coming up on a change and has regular ole Dino Motor oil in it at this time. It's a very late in model year run 2010 (May of 2010) if that ends up making a difference.

2011 JK Stick, 18K miles, no burning or losing oil. I towed a trailer 2500 miles with it two months ago, and didn't lose a drop (yes, I have changed my oil since then).

I have a 2010 JK Wrangler Rubicon, missed an oil change and now have to get the lower end replaced. Does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with the dealer on getting this replaced under warranty? It has 21k miles on it. The check engine light or low oil light never came on. It seems like others are seeing the high oil consumption as well.

Thumbs down oil consumption

Have a 2010 Rubicon. Burning 1 quart every 1,000 miles and experiencing trouble with the Jeep Dealer failing to assist me in resolving the issue.

2009 JKUR Was using about 1qt per 1000 miles. At the time was running the recommended 5w20. Last oil change switched to 10w30. Getting close to 1000 miles. No noticeable oil usage. Still shows full on the stick. So far so good.

You need to make some sort of oil drip - it goes all the time.

The dealer is replacing my engine. Jeepers, check your oil. This was a close one. Remember, we're not driving Toyota's.

My 2008 started burning oil at 51k miles.... At 54k miles it needed a new long block!!!! Out of warranty! Traded it in.... Hoping for better luck with the 3.6L than I had with the 3.8L! Either way I am covered for life now. Good luck! I'm waiting for the class action!

YEP .... loses oil

2007 JK 4dr Rubicon Unlimited Automatic with 28k.
Since birth she loses about 1.5 quart every 3k.
Change every 6k with 5w20 synthetic.

This time I was lax about checking it at the 3k mark and now its around 4.5k and no oil on the dip stick.

Added 3.5 quarts to bring it back up to the almost filled mark.

Hope I didn't do any damage.

07 JKU X, 6 speed, 3.8L....42K miles (used) 2000 miles on this oil change....

This weekend I took the Jeep on a short road trip to Central Oregon and back....
we went 386.6 miles, I checked the oil 3 times on the road, Each time the Dip Stick showed FULL... We got home and I parked it in the shop and checked the oil this morning after it sat all night.... FULL...
This is strange, usually I have to add oil at about 180 miles ( 1/2 quart...) Not this trip.
Trip was some Interstate (60-70 mph ) the rest was climbing up to 5300 Ft altitude thru
mountain passes and cruising thru twisty/turny slow going narrow paved roads to a State park in the Lava Flows... Weather was good, around 70*f....
Before I changed oil last time I used Sea Foam in the engine oil, ran it for 100 miles
Changed the oil. I;m using "Castrol Extended Milage Vehicle oil " This is a syn. blend.
I'm using 10W-30.... Now, I have added oil to this oil change. I have added so far 1 quart....and it has 2000 miles on this change... For some reason it didn't use any on this trip and I worked it pretty hard getting where we were going. I don't run hell out of it but I do try to keep up with traffic climbing steep long grades....
So, if you have a oil burner, I suggest you switch to "Castrol Extended Milage Vehicle oil ", 10W-30 in the Green Jug... It seems to be working for me....
Good Luck !......"BH"

2011 JK with 32,345 miles

Have a 2011 JK with 32,345 miles that uses oil. Just had it serviced today and it was about 1.5 quarts low - no leaks. The service tech said his son has a 2012 that also uses oil between services.

On my 2007 JK, with 87k, one time I went overdue with an oil change and eventually I started seeing a smoke or something emit from the engine. Needless to say, I brought it in for oil change ASAP. It probably burns through a quart of oil every 4k miles.

3.8 Oil Consumption

This is driving me nut and I'm thinking about getting rid of it. I have a 2007 JK and it started using oil quickly at about 55k I'm now at 65k and adding almost 3 quarts every 5k miles. I am now using 5/30 and no change. I'll try synthetic next I guess. If that doesn't do it, it's gone. I'm good at oil changes and have never had a vehicle do this. It still seems to run fine but I may do the compression/lead down test but I really don't want to know.
