Door Frame Knobs

What exactly do the knobs above the door frame do? I thought it was something to do with a hardtop, but last night i turned one of mine and noticed the black part where my door goes (doors are off) seemed to move a bit. What's the purpose of these things/why would anyone remove their door frames?

Thanks

Secure the door surrounds for the soft top.

Right. The door surrounds have to come off to put on a hardtop.

We occasionally pull them off if we know we won't have the softtop up that day to eliminate that "C" Pillar look.

XJCJ5JKU - since you've got the half doors, have you considered painting the B pillar black right at the top of the half-door line to make it look more 'roll-cagey' instead of 'B pillary'?

Yeah, I have considered it. That single stripe of Crush certainly stands out more with halfs, tops off or not. "Racing Stripe" vs Roll Bar... :-)

Just curious, do you put the soft top up occasionally on those days (brief rain shower) without the surrounds on? I have some, you lose the Sunrider latch points so the only forward latch point for the top is at the windshield, but it seems stable at hwy speeds. A bit of sail panel flapping, but it works. Taking all those surround pieces along is a pain!
