My understanding is that once the doors are unplugged the computer sees the doors as closed. Subsequently your steps would remain up your interior lights would be off and there would be no open door chime as you drive.
You could open the door and remove the fuse which would freeze the steps in the down position. Fuse is easy to find and remove right off the battery on mine. Then take your doors off no problem.
By all means, please share!
I'm on the fence due to this factor. Have seen a utube vid that shows it happening but haven't searched beyond here on how to make it happen.
Amp steps have a feature of allowing step to remind down when door is closed. Normally you open door and place your foot and apply pressure on step then close door. This enables steps to remind in down position. Use same concept when removing doors. Place your foot on step and apply pressure while removing electrical door plug Steps will remain down. I found out by accident. When you reinstall doors and plug in the steps will reengage and go up.
I have the RSE step sliders with rancho tube doors. I added a 2" 90degree cabinet bracket from home depot with a rare earth magnet to trigger the step. Works.
In our shop, we use a diode from blue ox. We tie the two purple and purple with white stripe wires in on the power in side of the diode. When then take a wire and run it from the power out side of the diode to the switch, then run a wire back from the switch to the negative side of the battery. When you take the doors off the switch will open and close both steps at the same time.
[I have a purple and a purple with black stripe, is this what I put in the power in on diode?

Hey guys the diagram i show is for one step only. I have a switch for each step on my jeep. That way im not wearing out the motor on the passenger side when the wife isn't riding with me.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram i can use for any of these setups? I have a set up Bestop side steps on a 2016 JKU from rockyridge. They told us they were from amp research but alas no. So i have a toggle switch kit for an amp research set of steps so i need to somehow retrofit it all to work so he can toggle his steps to work with the tube doors on.
I installed a set of Amp Research PowerSteps on ours. I came up with a wiring diagram to make it still work when the doors are off, although I have not yet done the mod. It triggers the steps to extend when the key fob button is pressed. There will be a toggle switch in the glove box to enable or disable that feature. The toggle switch glows blue when the steps are in the extended position.
I just installed the AMP Research Override Switch and upgraded controller. It is a super easy upgrade and installation. It took me all of 15 minutes to have it installed and working. The best part is not only can you override the system to control the steps when the doors are off, you can also stop it from functioning when the doors are on. During heavy snowfalls I will turn my power steps off because they get so built up with ice and slush when driving that they don’t come the whole way up and get stuck. Great upgrade and worth every penny.
