Drilling into the Freedom Hard top!!!!

Drilling into the Freedom Hard top to install Yakima Rack rails
Has anyone installed a Yakima Tracks on their hard top?
I am trying to locate the strongest point for the Unlimited Hardtop to drill and install these tracks. Noticed Wright at the top corner where the side wall and the roof meet there is some sort of reinforcement unfortunately there is a bit of curve. Anyone out there with this or similar experience?

In considering this on my hard top. With just a 2 door I'd have to cut the track bar where the roof separates so I can still use the freedom panels. Ive seen someone with a TJ do this. I think it doesn't matter too much how thick it is because it bolts to the roof with so many bolts. It's just my guess too that the roof is pretty universal in thickness on top

Doesn't really matter where you drill, there isn't much strength in the hardtop, itself-

It's not fiberglass and isn't warranty'd to support more than 150 lbs, entotal, not at points-

I've drilled it for my MBRP rack that will support over 750 lbs, but doesn't use the hardtop for structural strength-

So just FAGETABOUTIT

I noticed that MBRP makes a half roof rack as well which I like but they are pricey! I will be using it for light duty, two pair of skis and boots, maybe a cargo carrier!

Yeah, the hardtop changed significantly so it no longer works. Duh.

It is definitely a nice setup and I guess you can add an extender if you feel the need for full rack later on, right? Is that what you have, and I take it you are happy with it?
I think I will go with that long term once it becomes available. But I need something for my roof box for this winter!

I just have the rear of the hardtop section, there are options from the forward section to a basket to a forward light bar-

What happened to the 2011 and later tops that this won't work?

This rack has been on my wish list for a long time.

I wish MBRP hadn't changed their side bars (curve in to fit at bottom). Looked a lot more finished. For the $$, it looks like you made them yourself now. If I could find an old style set I'd grab 'em. I just wish "people" would consult me before they screw shit up. I like giving my opinion on almost everything. Except for the marriage and the volunteering for the Army thing I make very good decisions.

It's some kind of plastic. Flexes WAY too much to be fiberglass. My other car is fiberglass so I've got a frame of reference here.

Ok from what I can find, it's SMC which is a type of fiberglass.

Lighter than standard laid fiberglass, but not as strong.

Neat.

Sheet Moulding Compound.

Sorry but I would not mount anything on my hard top. I have a tire carrier ski rack that I use for skis.

Mine is like this:

Surco Safari Hardtop Rack for 07-15 JeepĀ® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

One more interesting option. You can also use Yakima and Thule on the rain gutters for light loads like skis.

The Surco Removable Hardtop Rack is my favorite option as well. I still cringe when I drill my Jeep and it's a '98! I like that fact that this is removable and doesn't require any new holes.

OP, let me know if you'd like quote on a rack!
